Eagle Rock Chapter President’s Message Maraia Roberts, Chapter President
Inside this issue
This is a great month for me and my family. 18 months ago, my daughter went away to serve a mis‐ sion for my Church, and tomorrow, Valentine’s Day, she lands in Idaho Falls airport at 6:00 p.m. – my hus‐ band and I could not have asked for a better valen‐ tine’s gift for each other. It has been a great journey for my family, and we have been blessed immensely because of her willingness to serve. As a parent it’s not always an easy task to watch your children when they’re heading down the wrong path; however on the other hand when they choose to do something that is life changing, for you and for them, you can’t help but feel this great sense of humility and peace within, knowing that in some small way, you had something to do with it. I am sure all of you Moms know exactly what I’m talk‐ ing about. Our February meeting was a total blast. Our very own Leslie Jernberg CAP‐OM, was our presenter and she introduced us to a fabulous new program called Ani‐ moto. I loved everything about it. To me it was like the fast and easy way to scrap‐booking – I’m not much of a crafty, scrap‐booker type person, but boy Animoto has changed all that for me. The best part is, there is no mess and it was super easy and FUN. I could tell that everyone enjoyed themselves. Kudos to Leslie for a job well done. We’ve got some exciting things coming up in our Chapter for the next few months. Our Membership meeting is scheduled for March 6th at the Hotel on the Falls (aka Red Lion) and I challenge all of you to “Each One – Reach One”. This is a great opportunity to get your friends and acquaintances to learn about our Chapter and IAAP. We are our Chapter’s only means of survival and success. (Continued on page 3)

Member of Excellence Corner Over the next couple of months, there are several opportunities to sign off on criteria in your Member of Excellence (MOE) Passpsort. Let’s count the ways: 1. Did you attend the Animoto training at EITC on Feb. 6? If so, don’t forget to document it in your Member of Excellence (MOE) Passport (criteria #9). 2. Did you recently receive your membership renewal notice? Pay on time or be‐ fore your due date. This is a mandatory criteria (#6) in your Passport. 3. “Each one – Reach one” is the encouragement of our Chapter President, Maraia Roberts. That would be criteria #10, “Recruit at least one new member.” That opportunity is coming up with the “Administrative Professionals Week Leader‐ ship Seminar.” Share the brochure with a friend and encourage them to attend. Then encourage them to become a member of a great organization! Once they’ve joined, you can count this as complete! 4. If you attend the seminar, remember to document it in your Passport. This can be EITHER criteria #4 or #9 (but not both). If you want to count it as #4, write a short paragraph on how the seminar relates to your job or your role in IAAP. Easy peasy! Keeping up on your MOE Passport will ensure that you don’t have to play catch‐up at the end of the year and possibly miss your reward by a small margin (something that you actually completed, but forgot to document). Keep your Passport handy and update it often! Submitted by Lana Egan, MOE Chair

President’s Message (Cont’d) Join me NOW and “Be the One” to make a difference. Remember as a TEAM, Together Everyone Achieves More In April we have our Member of the Year (MOTY) and Nominations meeting. Please get your nominations in to Bonnie Baird and Marti Casper for MOTY, and for Officer Nominations, our Chair is Sheri Andreason. I encourage you all to run for office. I can’t think of a better way to broaden your horizons by step‐ ping up and out of your comfort zone. Also in the works is our Administrative Professional Week (APW) Seminar, scheduled for April 18, 2013. We’ve got a fabulous committee working out the details to bring you a fun‐filled leadership and educational day. Our APW brochure will be coming out shortly, possibly by next week and once again, I challenge you to “Each One – Reach One”. Our Publicity Chair for APW is Erin Eddins – I am certain she’ll welcome any promo‐ tional and marketing suggestions and/or recommendations from our member‐ ship. We all need to take part in this effort and start advertising and getting the word out. Thank you everyone and happy Valentine’s Day.
The Paper Towel Admin I'll bet you are wondering what a paper towel administrative assistant is! This came to my thoughts recently, and I decided I definitely don't want to be one of those. Think about it: when does someone think about, or reach for, a paper towel? * When they've made a mess. * When they have a spill. * When something is sticky. And as soon as they use that paper towel to clean it up and their mess is gone... they ball the towel up and throw it away. And return to their work. I heard a speaker at Office Dynamics' Annual Conference for Administrative Excellence refer to a negative style of administrator as "transaction based." I've thought a lot about that since the conference, and I've concluded that this described administrators who perform a task when it's brought to them, then wait at their workstation for another transaction to come their way. But work is so dynamic, ever changing, and flowing like a river 24/7! We cannot afford to idle in neutral, awaiting our next task to come to us. We are capable of assimilating work and handling heavy responsibilities to achieve success and leverage the initiatives within our businesses. We can be the strategic business partners of management. I don't want to be a "paper towel admin," who is only thought about when one of my principal supports makes a mess of something and needs me to clean it up! (Continued on page 5)
Donate your gently used profes‐ sional clothing items to students in need. Sharp dressed graduating stu‐ dents are the goal of Bailey's Boutique. The boutique seeks to help graduating EITC students find interview‐appropriate work wear. "Many students are already struggling to pay for school costs and household expenses and therefore cannot afford a new suit or dress for a post‐graduate interview," says Bailey Winn EITC Foundation scholarship coordina‐ tor. "We wanted to find a way to make sure that our smart and capable students walked into their interviews confident that they looked career‐ready," she continues. The boutique is in need of men's jackets, button‐up shirts & polos, as well as men's dress shoes. To donate to Bailey's Boutique, call Bailey Winn at 524‐3000 ext. 3407.

The Paper Towel Admin (Cont’d) As an administrative professional, strategic thinking, advance planning and project man‐ agement are foundational to my success every day. It's much easier to become involved in a project early on, "out the gate" so I can work my magic, preventing mishaps along the way. But managers and principal supports won't think we can do this if we sit await‐ ing the next transaction, will they? Therefore, as administrative professionals, we need to rise up and truly reflect how capa‐ ble, polished and professional we are. We can do more, think more and accomplish more than ever before. We need to be open to becoming the "right hand liaison" of the leader; the strategic business partner who makes things happen within the organization. Instead of a paper towel, I want to be salt and pepper. I want to season things, and add flavor, working also to be a preservative. Why? Because every kitchen, restaurant, dorm, cart, cafeteria and take‐out joint have salt and pepper always available ‐‐‐ whether in paper packets, crystal or even those tall‐necked Corona bot‐ tles with perforated tops! No matter how fine you dine, whether "up" or "down" ‐town, you always need salt and pepper with you. And that's exactly how I want my principal supports and manager to view me: Necessary. Cleansing. Preservative. Flavorful. Excerpted from Monday Motivators
