CHOICES to Feature National Heroine in Israel -Former Miss Israel and Miss World Advocates for Female EmpowermentWhippany, NJ, October 1, 2014 — Linor Abargil, a former Miss Israel and Miss World who has become an advocate for girls and women to speak out against sexual violence, will be the guest speaker at CHOICES, the premier fall event of Women’s Philanthropy (WP) of Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ. The event will take place on Thursday, October 23, at the Hilton Parsippany, 1 Hilton Court. The evening will begin at 6:15 with a kosher wine and buffet reception followed by the program at 7:15. Andrea G. Bier of West Orange, Rachel Fink of North Caldwell, and Wendy Rosenberg of Westfield are event chairs. Joan Schiffer Levinson of Fanwood is WP president. Women’s Philanthropy provides the framework for Jewish women to transform their philanthropy into measurable support for people in need in Greater MetroWest, Israel, and around the world through oneof-a-kind missions and dynamic social and networking programs. "Women's Philanthropy is so fortunate to have Linor Arbargil our featured speaker at Choices this year. She will surely inspire us with her compelling story as we see how the strength and resolve of one amazing woman can benefit the lives of countless others across the world," said Levinson. A national heroine in Israel, Linor Abargil was crowned Miss World in November 1998. A month and a half before the Miss World competition, she had suffered a brutal rape while modeling in Italy. After the subsequent trial, which resulted in a 16-year prison sentence for her rapist, the young Linor made a public statement before the entire nation of Israel, counseling other women to not be afraid of reporting their rapes, and to seek punishment for the perpetrators. She then returned to a private process of healing but resolved to one day do something about the crime of rape. In 2013, Linor graduated law school with honors, and started an internship at the Tel Aviv District Attorney’s office. She intends to use her law degree to represent women who are victims of sexual violence. Brave Miss World, the documentary about Linor's life and speaking tour, in which she tells her own story and reaches out to rape survivors around the world, premiered in Washington, D.C., in June 2013. The film was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2014, and is now playing in film festivals and on television around the world. Her website is www.BraveMissWorld.com. CHOICES will also recognize Barbara Drench of Verona, Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award recipient, who was recently honored at the International Lion of Judah conference in New York City. Special acknowledgment goes to Allan Janoff and the Crystal Plaza. Corporate sponsors are General Plumbing Supply, Friedman LLP, and Kramer Levin. Registration is $80. A minimum gift of $365 to the 2015 United Jewish Appeal Campaign of Greater MetroWest NJ enables attendance at this event. For first time contributors, a minimum gift of $180
