Equity, Diversity, and Student Welfare Committee Meeting Minutes September 24, 2015 1:00pm Heritage Hall Committee members present: Phil O’Leary (co-chair), Regina Murphy (co-chair), Mark Covaleski, LéAndrea Vernon, Derek Field, Mark Nitka, Phil O’Leary, Seth Pollak, Karl Shoemaker, Andrea Mason, Peter Miller, Patrick Finley Committee members absent: Gen Carter, Jackie Hank, Maddie Timm Staff members present: Mark Shook, Kris Eiring, Bridget Woodruff, Terry Gawlik, Holly Weber, Erik Helland, Doug Tiedt, Alison Brooks, Katie Smith

I. Meeting called to order 1:03pm II. Introductions III. Meeting minutes from June 17, 2015 were approved. IV. Committee Responsibilities and Overview (Murphy and O’Leary) a. Equity b. Diversity c. Student Welfare V. The Big Ten Conference Standards for Safeguarding Institutional Governance (Murphy) a. The main concept is the institution is in charge of athletics, not just the athletic director. b. A ten (10) page document was sent out that included issues this committee deals with. VI. Director of Clinical and Sports Psychology (Eiring) a. Dr. Kris Eiring has been hired by the athletic department to head up the psychological services available year-round to student-athletes. b. Psychological services for student-athletes are growing for two reasons: counseling and mental skills. c. There are multiple points of entry including students, trainers, doctors, coaches, and academic services. d. 20% of student-athletes use the psychological services. The results from a survey showed 92% positive rating. The key for more growth is more

visibility and education. Dr. Eiring will provide an update at the end of the year. VII.

Director of Strength and Conditioning (Helland) a. Erik’s first goal when he started in June 2015 was to assess personnel internally. He also re-organized team assignments and chain of command. b. Important issues:  Collaborating within the University  Remember we are educators who can effect positive change of behavior  Improving the connections between the different resources that are available. c. We can continue to further education through internal communication (by sharing experiences and open dialogue) and having access to a variety of resources (papers, articles, manuals, conventions, clinics). d. Technology i. Discussed Metrifit, a player monitor app. e. Department Organization i. There are three (3) strength and conditioning rooms (2 in Camp Randall and 1 in the Kohl Center). ii. Planning to develop the internship program by incorporating undergrad and graduate students from other universities. This will be enriching for both the interns and student-athletes and allows for more coaches in the weight room.

Updates a. Issues pertaining to student-athlete welfare – Smith i. Cost of Attendance proposals will be reviewed next legislative cycle ii. The Big 12 is proposing to allow baseball student-athletes (who can be drafted while in college) to have agents. iii. Seeking to change the current rule that prohibits student-athletes to use their own name when owning and operating their own business. iv. Two new proposals include establishing a National Health and Wellness Committee (that would cover all issues) as well as not

being able to use a travel day as a day off (men’s basketball would be an exception). b. Gawlik i. Equity and Title IX are more than just gender equality, the underrepresented group is the context. c. Woodruff i. The Office of Student Athlete Development (OSAD) newsletter is sent out weekly. ii. September student-athletes of the month (voted through Student Athlete Advisory Committee): Colette Richter (Women’s Cross Country), Rose Lavelle (Women’s Soccer), and Alex Erickson (Football). iii. OSAD has recently moved to a model of assigning a staff member to each specific sport. This will help develop relationships with students encouraging participation in student-development programs, campus programs, and career development. iv. Grace Wold (Women’s Swimming) and Adam Remenuik (Men’s Soccer) are co-chairs of the Student Title IX Committee. v. Footage was taken for the It’s On Us campaign, a campaign that aims to stop sexual assault and violence. d. Tiedt i. Nick Aures was hired as the Director of Nutrition over the summer and will provide an overview at the next meeting. A performance nutritionist will be hired soon. e. Dr. Brooks i. This is the second year of participating (with over 20 other universities) in concussion research with the NCAA and Department of Defense. ii. The clinical part includes all student-athletes who are evaluated at certain intervals post injury. iii. The advanced study includes hockey players (on a voluntary basis). IX. Concussion Protocol Update (Tiedt)

a. Each school from the The Power Five (5) Autonomy conferences were asked to create a concussion protocol to be approved by the NCAA. The University of Wisconsin – Madison’s was accepted. b. Tiedt stated that Coach Chryst has indicated that he adheres to the yearround football practice contact guidelines. X. Solicitation of topics for 2015-2016 a. Email Regina about specific topics. XI.
