Diversity Committee Meeting Monday, May 4, 2015 7:00 pm-9:00 pm Conference Call NOTE: All minutes are final after approval by the committee chair and all committee decisions are subject to final approval by the Board. Committee Members Present: Sada Chidambaram, Chair; Vince Owens, Craig Pasqua, Martha Ehrenfeld, Minnie Wong and Jesse Inghelram Committee Members Absent: Joel Nicolas and Larry Atkins Guest: Dale Evans, USPTA Board Member Staff Members Present: Steve Leube and Silvia Dueñas-Bielser Sada, chair of the Diversity Committee, called the meeting was called to order at 7:05 pm. The following motion was duly made and seconded: RESOLVED, to approve the minutes of April 6, 2015. The motion was approved by a vote of 4 in favor, 0 opposed and 1 abstention.
Chairman’s Report – Sada Chidambaram Sada reported that the Adult League Committee has approached us for input as to D&I goals and strategies and consequently how they can utilize this to increase participation. Sada and Silvia to attend their next committee meeting to strategize in an effort to address the overall USTA NorCal goals. Sada reminded all committee members that continuous attendance to meetings is very important. Should one cannot make it, he urged that staff be notified. Sada reported on the annual meeting: Katrina Adams underscored that Hispanic factor is a national imperative; USTA Foundation available to local sections; and creation of Hispanic Engagement Advisory Group. Sada reported that he is currently in talks with three potential new committee members.
Staff Report Silvia reported that she, Steve, Sada and Lani met with Chris Iglesias, ED of The Unity Council, a community based organization in the heart of Oakland. They were there to discuss how USTA NorCal can address the Unity Council’s goals of health and fitness. There was a brief discussion about participating in the Unity Council’s Day of the Dead festival in November. Vince and Silvia met with Athletic Directory, Arsenyo Smith of Unity High regarding the showing of the Pancho Gonzalez movie for the commemoration event. Silicon Valley Tennis Academy is also participating in the Pancho Gonzalez movie commemoration event. Silvia reported on the Hola Run where Steve and Sada were also in attendance. It was a run well event where we captured the attention of the children also running in the event. It’s recommended to participate again in 2016. It’s an audience mentally geared towards athleticism.
Silvia reported on Annual Meeting. She explained that in addition to the creation of the Hispanic Engagement Advisory Group, Katrina Adams has created a High School task force and Sportsmanship taskforce. She also attended the D&I committee meeting where they are working on updating the engagement guides as well as creating a Millennials engagement guide for 2016.
Budget The YTD budget as of April 2015 was 5%. Silvia clarified that the YTD expenditures are misleading low as the majority of the plans, projects, etc are planned for Q3 and Q4.
Old Business Silvia reported that the June committee retreat is scheduled for Friday, June 12 at the Bay Club. Silvia took a poll of those who will be able to attend.
New Business Silvia welcomed Dale Evans, USPTA Board Member. She explained that building on the heels of last year’s coaches’ workshop, Dale and she have created a proposal a stipend process for the 2015 USPTA Fall Conference. Dale explained the goal and mission of stipending multicultural coaches to the USPTA conference. Committee discussed at length. The following motion was duly made and seconded: RESOLVED, to stipend up to 18 coaches at $50 each for a total of up to $900 to attend the 2015 Fall USPTA Conference. The motion was approved by a vote of 5 in favor, 0 opposed and 0 abstentions. Committee began discussion in regards to diversity at the Board and committee levels; which further led to discussions on the need for better understanding of the process of Board and Committee composition, if we are to address how best to effect a more diverse composition. Discussion was tabled for June Committee retreat. Silvia reported that she was contacted by McCarton Ackerman, co-chair of the USTA Partner/LGBT Business Resource Group in regards to marketing the new LGBT app at SF Pride. She inquired who from the committee would like to join the USTA NorCal staff delegation in walking in the parade. Steve explained that he already reached out staff to from a USTA NorCal delegation. Vince, Sada and Craig signed up to be part of the delegation.
