Tally graph: a graph showing information using tally marks What is your favorite pet?
Total
Dog 9
Cat 6
This will be students’ first exposure to tally graphs. Graphing is not covered in Kindergarten. This lesson represents a skill necessary for mastery of 1.MD.4. Some graphs will have information provided, others you will have to enter the data first. It may be helpful for students to mark/cross out each object as they count them.
Steps:
Fish 4
How many more “people voted for dogs than cats?” 9 — 6 = 3 more How many fewer “people voted for fish than cats?” 6 — 4 = 2 fewer

Considerations:
1. If needed, represent each person/vote with a tally mark. 2. Count the amount of votes in each category and record total in the box. 3. Interpret the data by answering the questions.
Application of MPs: MP2: How do you know your answers are correct? MP5: What tool did you use to help you solve the problems? MP6: How can you use the vocabulary words from today’s lesson to explain your answers?
