Today, I will identify the defining and non-defining attributes of plane shapes.

Vocabulary

Teacher Resources

Defining Attributes: Qualities that define a shape, such as number of sides, number of vertices, and being

closed.

If all sides do not meet, the figure is open and is not a plane shape. Non-Defining Attributes: Attributes such as color, orientation, or overall size that do not define a shape.

Considerations: If manipulatives are not available for this lesson, the attached pages of shapes may be used.

Steps: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Count the sides. Count the vertices. Determine if it is an open or closed shape. Determine the attribute that does not define the shape (color, size, orientation).

Orientation: The position of a shape

Application of MPs:

Vertex: the common point where two lines meet, a corner

MP1:

Vertices: more than one vertex

How will you prove your answers?

MP3: How does that drawing support your work? MP4: How can you relate this to something in real life?

/ Directions: Describe plane shapes by their defining attributes and then identify their non-defining attributes.

1. Identify defining and non-defining attributes of a hexagon. 

State the objective: Today, I will identify the defining and non-defining attributes of plane shapes.

Explain, while holding up a large paper hexagon, that a hexagon can be defined as a shape with 6 sides (count and record 6 sides), 6 vertices (count and record 6 vertices) and closed (trace the hexagon with your finger to show there are no openings and then record closed).

Emphasize that the number of sides, vertices, and closed vs. open shapes are attributes that define a shape; they are defining attributes.

Look closely at the hexagon and explain that although the hexagon is big, size cannot define a shape.

Emphasize that a hexagon can be defined as a closed shape with 6 sides and 6 vertices. Size is a non-defining attribute. Size cannot help define a shape.

2. Identify defining and non-defining attributes of a trapezoid. 

State the objective: Today, I will identify the defining and non-defining attributes of plane shapes.

Explain, while holding up a blue (or other colored), paper trapezoid or colored trapezoid tile, that a trapezoid can be defined as a shape with 4 sides (count and record 4 sides, emphasizing the different lengths), 4 vertices (count and record 4 vertices) and closed (trace the trapezoid with your finger to show there are no openings and then record closed).

Emphasize that the number of sides, vertices, and closed vs. open shapes are attributes that define a shape; they are defining attributes.

Look closely at the trapezoid and explain that although the trapezoid is blue (or whatever color is used), color cannot define a shape.

Emphasize that a trapezoid can be defined as a closed shape with 4 sides and 4 vertices. Color is a non-defining attribute. Color cannot help define a shape.

Imagine a blue-colored trapezoid.

/ Directions: Describe plane shapes by their defining attributes and then identify their non-defining attributes.

1. Identify defining and non-defining attributes of a square. 

Restate the objective.

Direct the students to identify a square that has been positioned to look like a diamond, with defining and non-defining attributes.

Defining Attributes 4 sides 4 vertices closed Non-Defining Attribute orientation

2. Identify defining and non-defining attributes of a rectangle. 

Restate the objective.

Direct students to define a red (or any other color) rectangle with defining attributes and to identify non-defining attributes.
