Tally graph: a graph showing information using tally marks What is your favorite pet?

Total

Dog 9

Cat 6

Fish 4

Tally marks: =1 =5

Considerations:

This will be the students’ first exposure to tally charts. Graphing is not covered in Kindergarten. This lesson represents a skill necessary for mastery of 1.MD.4. Explain to students that vertical lines are used to count the first 4 numbers, while a horizontal/ diagonal line strikes through the first 4 lines, indicating a group of 5.

It may be helpful for students to mark/cross out each object as they count them.

Steps:

1. Represent each person/vote with a tally mark. 2. Count the amount of votes in each category. 3. Record total in the box.

Application of MPs: MP1:

What are my steps?

MP2: How do you know your answer is reasonable? MP5: What does each tally mark represent?
