Today, I will tell time to the half hour.

Time to the Half Hour: Hour hand

Minute hand

Considerations: It is helpful to have a large analog clock with moveable hands available to model telling time. It is optimal for all students to have individual analog models or paper clocks. Emphasize to students that at the half hour mark, the minute hand has traveled halfway around the clock face. Therefore, the hour hand will not point directly at a number but rather between two numbers. Thirty minutes past an hour is sometimes called “half past” the hour.

Demonstrate to students how the movement of the minute hand counts the minutes in increments of one, after it has passed twelve. Minutes are grouped in fives. We count by 5s each time we count one of the numbers on the face of the analog clock. Skip count by 5s to 30 to find the half-hour.

1. Look at the clock. 2. Identify the hour hand. Record the hour. 3. Identify the minute hand. If the minute hand is not on the 12, count by fives to identify and record the minutes.

1. What time is shown on the clock? 

State the objective: Today, I will tell time to the half hour.



Explain that in order to make the clock show 2:30, the hour hand (the shorter hand) will be between two numbers because it is half past the hour.



Model how to start with the clock at 2:00 and move the minute hand, counting by 5s, until you have reached 30 and the minute hand is on the 6.



Explain that as the minute hand moves, the hour hand also moves slightly and so it will be between the 2 and the 3.



Point to the clock and state that if the hour hand is between the 2 and the 3, and the minute hand is pointing at the 6, then the time is 2:30.
