Today, I will compare fractions.
Vocabulary
Teacher Resources Considerations:
whole
Multiple paper circles, squares, and rectangles are needed for the students. Shapes are provided at the end of this lesson for duplication. Students should have two different colors for each shape.
half
Model many different ways to fold shapes into one-half and one-fourth (horizontally, vertically, and diagonally).
fourth/quarter
The partitioned shapes from Lesson 1 may be used.
Greater: bigger, more, larger Smaller: littler, less, smallest
Application of MPs: MP2: What do fractions mean to you? MP3: What evidence supports your answer? MP7: What vocabulary terms did you use?

Grade 1 Unit 8 Lesson 5 C TE
/ Directions: Use shapes to compare fractions.
1. Which is greater, a half or a fourth?
State the objective: Today, I will compare fractions.
Model how to partition a circle into 2 equal shares, or halves.
Model how to partition another circle of a different color into 4 equal shares, or quarters.
Emphasize that one half is greater than one fourth and that one fourth is less than one half by overlapping the shares.
Explain that when a whole shape is cut into fewer parts, the pieces are bigger. If you partition a whole shape into more parts, the pieces are smaller.
2. Which is greater, a half or a fourth?
Restate the objective: Today I will compare fractions.
Model how to partition a rectangle into 2 equal shares, or halves.
Model how to partition another rectangle of a different color into 4 equal shares, or quarters.
Emphasize that one half is greater than one fourth and that one fourth is less than one half by overlapping the shares.
Explain that when a whole shape is cut into fewer parts, the pieces are bigger. If you partition a whole shape into more parts, the pieces are smaller.

Grade 1 Unit 8 Lesson 5 C TE
/ Directions: Use shapes to compare fractions.
1. Which is greater, a half or a fourth?
Restate the objective.
Direct students to partition a circle into 2 equal shares, or halves, and another circle of a different color into 4 equal shares, or quarters.
Compare the shares, discussing which is smaller and which is bigger.
2. Which is greater, a half or a fourth?
Restate the objective.
Direct students to partition a square into 2 equal shares, or halves, and another square of a different color into 4 equal shares, or quarters.
Compare the shares, discussing which is smaller and which is bigger.

Grade 1 Unit 8 Lesson 5 C TE
Directions: Use shapes to compare fractions.
1. Using a circle, compare which share is smaller: one-half or one-fourth?
2. Using a rectangle, compare which share is greater: one-half or onefourth?
3. Using a square, compare which share is smaller: one-half or one-fourth?
Recap today’s lesson with one or more of the following MP questions: MP2: What do fractions mean to you? MP3: What evidence supported your answer? MP7: What vocabulary terms did you use?
