Today, I will solve subtraction problems as unknown-addend
Vocabulary Think addition to subtract:
7—5= 5+=7 Create drawings:
7 — 5=
Teacher Resources Considerations: Creating drawings and counting up are modeled in this lesson but other strategies could also be used. Students who are familiar with addition facts may not require strategies, as they will automatically know the missing addend.
Steps: 1. Think of the numbers in your subtraction fact
5+=7 Count up:
7 — 5= 5+=7 (5….6, 7)
as an addition fact. + = 2. Use a strategy (drawings, count up, etc.) to find the missing addend. 3. Use the missing addend to solve the subtraction fact.
Application of MPs: MP2: What steps help you solve your problems? MP4: How do you know your answers are correct? MP8: Can you use any shortcuts to solve the problems?
/ *MP1: Make sense of the problem and persevere in solving it! *MP8: Find a strategy to help solve the problem. Directions: Write the addition fact that helps solve the subtraction fact. Solve for the unknown addend and find the difference.
1.
State the objective: Today I will solve subtraction problems as unknown addend problems.
Explain to use an unknown addend problem to help you subtract, you need to think: “4 and what makes 9?”
9—4=
Record the unknown addend equation.
4+
=9
Explain there are different strategies that can be used to find the unknown addend but the use of drawings will be modeled for this problem.
4+
=9
Write 5 in the box and Explain it took 5 more to get to 9.
Directions: Write the addition fact that helps solve the subtraction fact. Solve for the unknown addend and find the difference.
1.
8—5= 5+
=8
2.
10 — 7 = 7+
= 10
*MP3: Do you agree/disagree with what
said?
*MP6: How do you know your answers are correct/reasonable?
Recap today’s lesson with one or more of the following MP questions: MP2: What steps helped you solve your problems? MP4: How did you know your answers were correct? MP8: Did you use any shortcuts to solve the problems?
