SEX & RELATIONSHIP (SRE) EDUCATION Dear Y5 Parents/Carers, As part of our Personal, Social and Health Education, Y5 will spend some time this half-term looking at puberty and the physical and emotional changes they will go through at this stage in their growth and development. A key aim of George Street Primary School is that each pupil will develop the skills and knowledge to make informed decisions and keep themselves safe. Decisions about how they relate to others can only be made if they have enough knowledge and understanding of their own physical and emotional development. This is not a task for the school in isolation, and we will work with you to ensure that the teaching of Sex and Relationship Education reflects your expectations and compliments the discussions you may have with your child at home. To achieve this aim, the children will be given a talk by our school nurse Mrs. Franklin-Smith on 26th June 2015. She will use a powerpoint presentation called ‘Puberty: understanding your changing body,’ created by the Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust, which is about the changes they will go through during puberty before participating in follow up discussions and activities. They will also watch relevant programmes from the Channel 4 DVD ‘All About Us Living and Growing’ which is recommended by school health. Following this input, they will bring home a booklet called ‘Girls looking ahead; Boys looking ahead.’ You may wish to use this to promote further discussion at home. We make it clear to pupils what our procedures are with regard to confidentiality when SRE is being delivered. The children will be provided with the opportunity to have their questions answered in a safe, secure environment. All adults will respond to these questions in a way that is age and stage appropriate and will always consult with Miss Lamb if guidance is required on how to respond to particular queries/requests. The powerpoint ‘Puberty: understanding your changing body’ and the programmes from the DVD are available for you to view without your child on: Monday 15th June 2.30pm – 3.10pm Thursday 18th June 2.30 – 3.10pm If you are unable to make these time, but wish to view the powerpoint and DVD, please speak to me and we can rearrange a convenient time for you. Copies of the leaflet ‘Girls looking ahead; Boys looking ahead’ will also be available for parents/carers to look at before they are bought home.

Please indicate on the slip below if you would like to watch the DVD at one of the stated times. A copy of our Sex and Relationship Policy is also available for you on request. This can be emailed to you or a paper copy can be collected from the school office. All parents and carers have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of any SRE provided (except when it occurs in National Curriculum Science lessons.) If you wish to withdraw your child from SRE lessons, please let me know. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely,
