Grand Junction FC Fire Rec Session Plan U9 Week 6 April 23-27 Theme: Effective Shielding and Turning Aim: To improve shielding of the ball when playing with your back to goal and under pressure. To learn how and when to effectively turn in this situation.
Warm up: area 20x20. Split the group into two, half inside the square, half on the outside. Players on the inside have a ball and dribble round, playing a 1-2 with someone on the outside. Upon receiving the ball back, they must shield the ball for 3 seconds, before turning and dribbling to another player on the outside. Rotate players after one minute. Progress by: adding passive defenders in the middle to put players under pressure, allow them only to shield and turn with their weaker foot. Coaching points: stand side on with ball towards player on the outside, hold out arm behind to know where defender is at, knees bent with a low center of gravity, quick turn and acceleration towards next player.
Technical: area 30x20. Split group into two teams, and then split again so they’re standing at opposite diagonal corners of the grid. One player runs in and receives a pass from their teammate in the opposite corner. A defender from the same side comes in to apply pressure from behind. The attacker shields the ball and attempts to turn the defender and play the ball to a teammate in the same corner. If defender steals they play to teammate across from them. Then the other team attempt the same thing. Progress by: if defender steals ball they then have to shield and try to turn their opponent, set a time limit on each round. Coaching points: all above points, use upper body to protect ball, be confident to turn either direction using either foot.
Game scenario: area 30x20. Similar set up to the technical practice except now only one player from each team by the goals, other players start midway along opposite sidelines. One player from the goal plays the ball in, their teammate receives it and shields the ball from the defender approaching from the other sideline. Attacker turns the defender and then breaks toward goal, looking to score. Then the other team take their turn. Progress by: allowing the feeder player to join in and make it a 2v1 after the attacker shields the ball for 8 seconds so attacker can lay the ball off to them if unable to turn. Coaching points: all above points, if support player joins in can attacker use that as a distraction to turn the defender,
Small sided game: area 40x30. Play a 5v5 or 6v6 game, with or without goalkeepers depending on numbers. Healthy supply of soccer balls by goals. Whenever a goal goes out of bounds, the game restarts with a pass from the goalkeeper (whoever would have gained possession from the restart) to an outfield player who MUST receive the ball with their back to goal to encourage shielding and turning. Rotate players regularly so they all play in the position to receive from the GK. Progress by: additional points for successful shield and turns, moving on to free play before the end of the game Coaching points: all above points, be aware of where the defender is applying pressure from, when to shield and when to turn, other players must offer support deeper to drop if player in possession cant turn
