Grand Junction Fire FC Recreation Session Plan U8 Week 2 Mark 26-30. Theme: Shielding and Turning Aim: To learn how to shield the ball, know when to do so, and how to turn when under pressure

Warm up: Area 30x30 Each player has a ball, players in pairs. Line of tall cones in middle of square. Players dribble towards the cone at the same time, perform a turn, and the head back to their starting position. Turns are, inside hook, outside hook, drag back and pull back. Progress by: add a defender at the cone, who once attackers have turned, chases them and tries to tag them, or take a pinnie from them. Coaching points: use both feet for dribbling and turns, slower and closer control towards cone, accelerate away from cone (bigger touches), use different surfaces of foot

Technical: Area 30x30. Each player has a ball, now cones are spread around the grid. Players are dribbling around, when coach shouts ‘shield’ players must find a cone, shield the ball for 5 seconds, then on coaches call, players perform a turn and continue to dribble Progress by: decreasing the time they shield the ball (must get ball under control quicker) and award points for doing it successfully, add defenders to replace the tall cones (initially inactive, then becoming more active) Coaching points: make sure both feet and different surfaces are being used, side on stance when shielding, bend knees, position ball at further point away from defender, use upper body to help shield, make sure turn is followed by acceleration away from the cone/defender Game scenario: Split into 2 groups of 6, 3 attackers and 3 defenders in each. Player 2 (attacker) moves toward player 1 (the feeder) who passes the ball. Player 3 (defender) moves with attacker and applies pressure. Attacker shields ball, then turn away from defender before scoring in the goal. Feeder then becomes attacker, defender joins feeder line and attacker joins the defender line. Progress by: allow feeder to join attacker to make it 2v1, attacker can shield then turn or pass, add a goalkeeper, if defender wins the ball, allow them to score, add a time limit attacker must score in Coaching points: side on stance when shielding, bend knees, position ball at further point from defender, use upper body to help shield, make sure turn away from the defender , try to keep the ball moving as the attacker, accelerate away after turn Small sided game: Teams with equal numbers (where possible), each half is limited to 2v2 or 3v3 and players must stay in their half of the field. Attackers must receive ball with their back to goal, and aim to shield the ball then turn before scoring. Rotate players in their halves every 2/3 minutes. Progress by: adding a neutral player who plays for the team in possession (may need to do anyway if odd numbers are present), allow a defender to join attackers after a pass is player, introduce a time limit for the attacking team to score, otherwise defending team gets ball Coaching points: all above points, determine whether to turn or play a pass to teammate, make sure defenders are pressuring attackers to allow for opportunities to shield and turn
