Grand Junction Fire FC Rec Session Planner U9 Week 8 May 7-11 Theme: Defending 1v1 Aim: To improve first person defending, and to learn how to dictate the attackers movement and make play predictable.

Warm up: area 25x25 with a 10x10 square in the middle. 2 defenders in square without a ball, every other player has a ball. Players aim to dribble through the central square without being tagged. Defenders aim to tag them. If tagged a player must do ball mastery before restarting game (toe taps, foundations, rollovers etc). Rotate defenders every minute or so. Progress by: changing number of defenders, increase or decrease square size depending on success, give defenders a ball too. Coaching points: pressure attackers quickly, good defensive stance showing them away from the square, aim to delay them as its easier to tag them if moving slower.

Technical work: area 30x30 split into 4. Split players into 4 groups of 2-3 and all take soccer balls to their grid. There is one goal in each area. Defender stands at side of goal, attacker on furthest line away. Defender passes to attacker, and immediately closes them down and pressures them. Attacker aims to score for a point, if defender delays for 8 seconds, they get a point. Rotate roles. Progress by: if attackers are easily beating defenders tell them they must use a move to beat the defender, this will aid slowing them down, decrease/increase time to delay for a point, add a goalkeeper Coaching points: all above points, don’t stab at ball, don’t over commit, keep body between ball and goal Game scenario: area 40x30yds with 2 pug goals back to back in the middle and 1 cone goal on each edge of the grid. Two teams, but attackers must have more numbers (6v4, 7v5). Attackers aim to score in one of center goals, defenders aim to dictate attackers movements away from the center goals. If they steal the ball, they can attack any of the 4 goals on the outside. Rotate 2 defensive players at a time every 3 minutes or so. Progress by: even out the teams, take away goals on the outside leaving only 2. If defenders are constantly stabbing at the ball, ban them from tackling. Coaching points: all above points, aim to direct them away from the middle using body shape and positioning,

Small sided game: area 40x30 with 2 end zones. 1 attacker and 1 defender in each end zone, everyone else plays in the middle. Aim is to play in to the forward who tries to score. Defender must attempt to show them away from goal. Rotate positions regularly so everyone plays as the defender. Progress by: upping to 2v2 in end zones, adding goalkeepers, time limits on strikers once in end zone (can drop ball back to middle if they cant score), additional points for defenders if they delay well. Coaching points: early pressure on the ball, use body shape to direct away from goal, steal the ball on a bad or heavy touch.
