Grand Junction Fire FC Rec Session Planner U9 Week 2 March 26-30 Theme: Dribbling and Effective Use of Moves Aim: To improve the use of moves at game speed, and begin to know when and where not just how
Warm up: ‘shadow soccer’. Area 30x25. Split players into pairs, each with a soccer ball, number them 1 and 2. Number 1 dribbles around the square, and number 2 must copy exactly what they do (which foot, which surface, any moves or turns, changes of direction, changes of pace etc) After 45 seconds, switch their roles, 2 becoming the leader and repeat. Progress by: making it a competition where the leader aims to lose the follower, change who each players partners are, so they’re working with different people Coaching points: use both feet, all surfaces, and incorporate any moves they may know, make sure it isn’t all done at one pace, closer touches near people larger touches in space.
Technical work: same as last week, split players into 4 groups, 2/3 in each. Place players 10/15yds away from a center cone. Players go one at a time from each line, dribble towards cone, then perform a move, and cut away. Moves to incorporate are scissors, step over, chop, double scissors. All moves must be done while player is moving forwards, they cannot stop to perform this move. Progress by: varying the direction (head left away from cone, making them use outside of left foot to do so) introduce a passive defender, then make them more active stepping to intercept ball or poking away if player stops. Coaching points: all above points, perform move at a good distance from cone/defender (not too close to be tackled, but not too far away so it’s ineffective and defender can recover the space.
Game scenario: 1v1 with 4 goals. On a small field, place 4 goals, 2 for each team to attack, and split group into 2 teams. One player enters field with a ball, a defender from the other side joins. The attacker must do a move to beat the defender before scoring in one of the goals. 2 goals means the defender can only block one, meaning one is open to attack. If defender wins ball, they can attack one of their goals. Progress by: making this 2v2, setting a specific move player must do, introduce a time limit in which the attacker can score, keep count of which team scores a goal to have competition (move = 1, goal = 1 so attackers can score 2 every time, defender steals and scores = 1) Coaching points: all above points, eyes up to see which goal defender is covering and doing move towards open one, change of pace after move is critical, doing the move while dribbling is key.
Small sided game: start 2v2 same as last week. Lots of opportunities to take defenders on. Encourage using moves to beat the defender, add an additional goal to the score if they beat a defender and if that leads directly to a goal, give them 3 points. Progress by: putting a time limit on attacking teams to get them to play at a higher tempo and speed, increasing the number of players on the field. Coaching points: encourage players to be confident and take players on, eyes up always looking for space to attack.
