1. We are familiar with the phrase, ‘God is holy’. So, how do the 10 Commandments reveal God’s holy nature?
Have you ever known someone who seemed to acknowledge God, even relish His love for them, yet completely reject His holiness by their actions?
2. Read carefully Ex 20:20. The word fear appears twice. First, it appears as a ‘do not’… then, as a do fear God. How are we to understand this apparent contradiction?
3. In the second commandment, God describes Himself as a
jealous God (20:5). In fact, it seems the first four commandments relate to this characteristic of YHWH. What does this tell us about God and why is it okay for God to be jealous?
4. Moses’ face radiated the glory of God after meeting with
Him on Mt Sinai. Have someone read 2 Cor 3:4-18 in the New Testament. This passage seems to teach that we should likewise radiate the glory of God to the world. How can we do this, if we have never been to Mt Sinai? How do we still wear ‘veils’ (masks) even though Christ has set us free from shame and guilt?
Family Talk Points Bible Basis: Exodus 19-25:22 Key Verse: “[God's people] answered with one voice. They
said, 'We will do everything the Lord has told us to do' " (Exodus 24:3).
Preschool/Elementary
Why did God’s people need rules? Those rules are pretty old. Do they still apply today? Why? Which one of the 10 Commandments is the hardest for you to follow? What are some other important rules that the 10 Commandments don’t cover?
Middle/High School
What do you think is the most important of the 10 Commandments? Why? When Jesus was asked that same question, what did He say? (Read Matt. 22:36-40) Why did He answer this way? Do you agree? The third commandment talks about not misusing God’s name. Does that apply to words such as “Gosh”, “Geez” and “OMG”? What do the 10 Commandments show us about God’s character?
