January 10, 2014 NEWSLETTER
New Year A Great Time For Flight # 48 THE CAPTAIN’S CORNER: There is a lot to do this year for the Harley H. Pope Flight. With 2013 behind us and the flight is current with all National requirements and the flight financial status in excellent health and in position to offer two (2) $1000 Scholarships. Walt Dietrich and I visited the North Carolina Aviation Museum & Hall of Fame in Asheboro, North Carolina on January 9, 2014 to see if there was a good fit for the Memorabilia that the flight has. Will give a short briefing on our conclusion, and get a vote of consensus of what action to take. Their Web site: http://www.ncaviationmuseumhalloffame.com/ Terry Sanford High School AFROTC is updating the Junior ROTC the rosters (email addresses) for the 59 high schools that receive award recognition from National. Joe Fitzpatrick sent out the following information to the local universities: Lt. Harley H. Pope Flight (Pope AFB) 2014 Matching Academic/Leadership Daedalian Scholarship program which awards scholarships to deserving North Carolina Air Force ROTC
cadets. Two cadets will receive $1,000.00 scholarships (A $500.00 increase from previous years) for their college education. In the past, the National Headquarters has matched our scholarship so each cadet may receive an additional $1,000.00. The flight can’t thank Joe enough for all his work. On December 26th the Harley H. Pope Flight presented a U.S. Flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to Lt. Colonel (USAF retired) Wally Schrontz in commemoration of his 90th birthday. The flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol on his birthday, November 15, 2013 and was presented to Wally at the Pinehurst Healthcare and Rehabilitation facility in Pinehurst, NC. Wally Schrontz is the seventh Flight member to receive this honor. Bill Schrontz who arranged the presentation said following the presentation “my Dad's cognizance was unbelievable during the visit. He was sound asleep when I got there, but woke up immediately when I told him that his Daedalian buddies were coming.” We all noticed, when the Air Force song was played he was fully alert and happy to see his fellow pilots. As Bill said, “... my Dad was more alert and had better interaction than we’ve seen in months. The presentation lifted our spirits, and made it a day thatL towe will all R : Bill, Wally, and Sherry Dales remember and cherish forever. Thank you so much for everything.” In attendance was Lester Schrontz, brother, Sherry Dales, daughter, Bill Schrontz, son, and Bill Schrontz' finance Linda Scott. Flight members present were Col. (retired) Joe Fitzpatrick, presenter, Maj. (retired) Mike Reid, Flight Captain, Maj. (retired) Keith Clayton, Flight Treasurer, and Maj. (retired) Walt Dietrich, Flight Adjutant. We would not be able to do this except for the initiative and dedication of our former Flight Captain Dale Stevens and Joe Fitzpatrick. The Flight receives outstanding support from U. S. Senator Richard Burr's office for making this event happen for our Flight members reaching this remarkable milestone. This was our 7th presentation to a Flight member. All were WW II veteran pilots. A former Air Force C-130 pilot who flew and retired out of Pope AFB LTC (ret) John Daughtry passed away on January 1, 2014. If you would more information on LTC Daughtry, please let me know.
