Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next— Through Strong Heart Connections

STUDENTS PAGE July 31—August 2, 2011 Encouraging Friends—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a parent goes first): When it’s your turn, say: On a scale of 1-7, with 1 being distant and 7 being close, I give our relationship a ___ because . . . Something from the Heart Surprise I want to remember:

2. Read Scripture: Acts 16:40 and 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Truth • God wants us to encourage those around us. Untruths • What I say or do has nothing to do with anyone else. • People don’t need me, and I really don’t need them. • Only weak people need to be encouraged. 3. Explore Scripture: Write what you want to remember about the Scriptures.

4. Think It Through: Ask: Is it strange that Paul and Silas were the ones encouraging others? Wouldn’t it have been more practical to see the believers encouraging them? What does this tell us about facing hard times? Ask a family member to read 2 Corinthians 1:3-4. Say: God helps us find ways to encourage others even when we are facing difficult times. Discuss the actions we should take when we face difficult times. 5. Nail It Down: A parent will lead this step. 6. Pray: Include this thought in your prayer: Thank You, God, for encouraging us when we face tough times. Help us encourage others by telling them about our relationship with You. 7. Blessing: Listen as your parent blesses the family. Teen Tip: Ask your parents to identify two or three people who encouraged them when they were your age. Share the names of two or three people who encourage you. Lead your parents in a short prayer thanking God for those who have been encouraging in the past.
