Rockets vs. Cougars Wednesday September 28, 2016 Game Time – 7:05 pm Tonight’s Preview: This is the first of eight meetings between the Kelowna Rockets and Prince George Cougars this season. This is also the first of three consecutive games between these two teams, with the BC Divisional rivals meeting in Prince George this weekend for two games. The Rockets were 6-2-0-0 in eight meetings last year, with both losses coming in Kelowna. The Rockets are 19-5-0-0 in their last 24 regular season games against the Cougars dating back five seasons and 9-3-0-0 in their last 12 meetings at Prospera Place. Rockets are 10-2-0-0 in their last 12 visits to Prince George. The Rockets are coming off a 5-1 win Saturday against the Kamloops Blazers. Riley Stadel scored twice in the win while Jonathan Smart, Tanner Wishnowski and Jordan Borstmayer added singles. Michael Herringer was solid in a 25 save performance. The Rockets play 6 of their first 8 games on the road. Following two games in Prince George this weekend, the team heads out on a three game in four day road trip through Central Alberta which includes stops in Lethbridge, Edmonton and Red Deer. Broadcasters Bits: Jason Smith earned his first WHL coaching victory Saturday against Kamloops…Riley Stadel has two goals, the same number he had all of last season…Rookie Kyle Topping has assists in back-to-back games….Riley Stadel’s two goals Saturday allowed the 20 year-old to reach the 100 point mark for his career…The Rockets were 3 and 2 in five pre-season games. Jake Kryski and Kole Lind led the team in pre-season points with 8 each….Nine members of the Rockets participated in NHL training camps. Tomas Soustal and Gordie Ballhorn earned tryouts with Edmonton and Dallas respectively. Nick Merkley (Arizona), Lucas Johansen (Washington), Dillon Dube (Calgary), Devante Stephens (Buffalo), Calvin Thurkauf (Columbus), Braydyn Chizen (Minnesota) and Justin Kirkland (Nashville) are all drafted players. What the heck happened? Last season, the Rockets won 48 games and finished this season with 100 points. Only Victoria (106) and Brandon (102) had more points than the Rockets last season. The Rockets th th scored the 4 most goals in the WHL (269) while allowing the 6 fewest (218). The team advanced all the way to the Western Conference final for a third consecutive season after playoff series wins over Kamloops (7 games) and Victoria (7 games). The team was eliminated by the Seattle Thunderbirds (four straight games) in the Western Conference final. In each of the last two seasons, the Rockets season has st ended in overtime. Tyson Baillie led the team in scoring last season with 95 points and was named a 1 team Western Conference all-star. Smith Guides Team: The Kelowna Rockets made a head coaching change at seasons end. After just one th th year on the job, Brad Ralph parted ways with the team on May 9 . Then on July 6 , Jason Smith was hired as Brad Ralph’s replacement. Smith is the Rockets fourth coach in the last four years. Smith, who retired September 2, 2009, played 16 seasons in the NHL before joining the coaching staff of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators, a role Smith has held for the last four seasons’. Winds of Change: The Kelowna Rockets have lost three of their top four scorers from last season. Tyson Baillie (95 pts.), Justin Kirkland (67 pts.) and Cole Linaker (50 pts.) are no longer with the team. There is an outside chance Kirkland could return if he fails to stick with Nashville’s AHL affiliate. Goaltender th Jackson Whistle also graduated. Joe Gatenby was traded to Kamloops for Jake Kryski on August 18 . The Rockets return 19 players from last season’s team. The only other change saw Adam Brown join the team as a part time coach. Brown owns the Kelowna Rockets franchise record for games played (200) and saves made (5,079). Wednesday, September 28, 2016 Prince George Cougars (3-0) at Kelowna Rockets (1-1) ROAD WARRIORS: The Cougars have kicked off their 23rd season in the WHL with three straight victories. Last Friday the Cougars got two goals from Colby McAuley and 30 saves from Ty Edmonds in a 3-1 victory over Victoria, and followed that up with a 5-1 victory the next night. Jared Bethune and Brad Morrison led the way Saturday with four assists each. Last night in Vancouver Jared Bethune paced the Cougars offense with three goals and Justin Almeida and Colby McAuley each added a goal and two assists to lead the Cougars 7-6 over the Vancouver Giants. Tonight in Kelowna the Cougars wrap up their four game, eight day road trip when they clash with the Kelowna Rockets. THE RICHARD MATVICHUK ERA BEGINS: On June 2, 2016 Richard Matvichuk was named the 12th head coach in the history of the Prince George Cougars. The native of Fort Saskatchewan, AB spent the past two seasons as the Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the Missouri Mavericks of the ECHL. In 2015-16 Matvichuk led the Mavericks to the Brabham Cup title as the ECHL’s regular season champions. Matvichuk was named both the ECHL Coach of the Year and the ECHL Executive of the Year. Previously he spent two seasons with the Allen Americans (2012-13 and 2013-14) as the Assistant General Manager and Assistant Coach where he helped guide them to back-to-back league championships. Matvichuk spent 14 seasons in the NHL. His impressive career included stints in Minnesota (1992-93), Dallas (1993-2004) and New Jersey (2005-2007). During the 1998-99 season, he played an integral part in helping the Dallas Stars win their first and only Stanley Cup. His NHL career consisted of 796 career regular season games, 39 goals, 139 assists and 624 penalty minutes. COUGARS-ROCKETS: Tonight in Kelowna the Cougars kick off a stretch of three straight games against their B.C. Division rivals, the Kelowna Rockets. Last season the Cougars were 2-4-1-1 in eight meetings with Kelowna and were 1-2-0-1 against them at Prospera Place. Brad Morrison (4G, 3A) led all active Cougars with seven points in eight games a season ago against Kelowna. Between the pipes, Ty Edmonds went 2-3-0-1 against the Rockets and posted a 2.64 goals-againstaverage and a .920 save percentage during his six appearances. LEADING THE PACK: Through three games 19-year-old forward Jared Bethune (3G, 4A) leads all Cougars in scoring with seven points. Bethune also leads the team in plus-minus with a +8 rating. New York Rangers prospect Brad Morrison (OG, 6A) leads all Cougars in assists and penalty minutes (11). 20-year-old forward Colby McAuley (4G, 2A) leads the team with four goals. Ty Edmonds leads the way in goal with a 2-0 record, a 2.14 goals-against-average and a .930 save percentage. The Prince George Cougars are one of six WHL teams without a regulation loss to start the season. EIGHT COUGARS ATTEND NHL CAMPS: For the first time since the 2000-2001 season the Prince George Cougars sent eight players to NHL Camps. Jansen Harkins is with the Winnipeg Jets and is attending his second NHL camp. Harkins was drafted by the Jets in the second round of the 2015 NHL Draft. Jesse Gabrielle was drafted by the Boston Bruins in Round 4 of the 2015 Draft and still remains with the Bruins as of this week. The same goes for defenceman Sam Ruopp, a fifth round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2015. He’s in Columbus for main camp. Fellow defenceman Tate Olson attended his second ever NHL camp with the Vancouver Canucks after being selected by them in the seventh round of the 2015 NHL Draft but is back for tonight’s game. In Colorado, Josh Anderson (drafted Round 3, 2016) and Brogan O’Brien (a free agent invite) attended the Avs main camp and are back.
