Tuesday, January 19, 2016 Prince George Cougars (27-16-1-1) at Kelowna Rockets (30-11-3-0) HAPPY NEW YEAR!: As 2015 comes to an end the Cougars are right in the thick of things having earned at least a point in 26 of their th past 38 games. Over that span the Cougars have gone 24-12-1-1 overall and prior to December 18 against Victoria they had gone 10 straight games at home without a regulation loss. Heading into tonight’s game against Kelowna the Cougars have won 14 of their past 22 and have earned points in 17 of their past 25 games, 16 of which have been victories. Their 27-16-1-1 record has them 14 points ahead of their pace from a season ago and marks their best start to a season since the 2001-2002 season. GIVE ME MO!: Saturday night at the Pacific Coliseum, the Prince George Cougars defeated the Vancouver Giants by a 6-4 score. Leading the way offensively for the Cougars was forward Brad Morrison (15,16, 17) who netted his first career WHL hat-trick including the game winning goal early in the third period. Four other Cougars: Jesse Gabrielle, Chase Witala, Kody McDonald and Joe Carvalho recorded multi-point games. It was the fourth straight road victory for the Cougars and their fourth straight victory against the Vancouver Giants in Vancouver. The Cougars improved their road record to 12-8-1-0 with the victory. TONIGHT’S GAME: Tonight in Kelowna the Prince George Cougars wrap up their two game swing through the B.C. Division with their fifth meeting of the season against the Kelowna Rockets. So far this season the Cougars are 2-2 against Kelowna and are perfect 1-1 against them at Prospera Place. Brogan O’Brien (2G, 2A) leads all Cougars with four points in four games played against the Rockets this season. In three games against Kelowna this season, goaltender Ty Edmonds has posted a 2-1 record with a 1.50 goals-against-average, a .955 save percentage and one shutout. WHAT A MONTH FOR WITALA: Of the many success stories for the Prince George Cougars during the month of December, nobody in the entire WHL was better than Chase Witala who earlier this week was named WHL Player of the Month for December. The 20year-old Prince George product scored an astonishing 14 goals in 13 December games and added nine assists for 23 points total. His December highlights included: Back-to-back hat-tricks against Vancouver (December 6) and Kootenay (December 8), six multi-point games and a +10 rating. Witala has points in 10 of his past 12 games and has registered seven goals and 16 points in that span. LEADING THE PACK: Through 45 games, Jesse Gabrielle (28G, 19A) and Chase Witala (27, 20A) are tied for the team lead in points with 47. Gabrielle also leads the team in goals (28), shorthanded goals (5), multi-point games (13) and goal scored at home (17). Chase Witala also leads the team with eight power play goals and two hat-tricks. Defenceman Tate Olson (4G, 28A) leads all Cougars d-men with 32 points, 13 power play points and a plus-minus rating of +19. Colby McAuley is tops on the team with 105 penalty minutes. Brogan O’Brien leads all Cougar rookies with 11 goals and 21 assists. COUGARS ROSTER BREAKDOWN: Currently the Cougars roster sits at 26 players: Two goaltenders, nine defencemen and 15 forwards. Of those 26, three are 20 years old, four are 19 years old, 10 are 18 years old, six are 17 years old, two are 16 years old and one is 15-years-old. 16 of the 26 players were selected by the Cougars in the WHL Bantam Draft, six were acquired via trade, two were added to the 50-man protected list and two were selected in the CHL Import Draft. 11 are from B.C., four are from Saskatchewan, four are from Alberta, four are from Manitoba, along with one each from Ontario, the Netherlands and Slovenia. DID YOU KNOW: On December 8th against Kootenay, Chase Witala became the first Cougar since Blake Robson in 2002 to record th back-to-back hat-tricks. Witala recorded his 100 career goal on December 15th in Seattle and heading into tonight’s game Witala is only five goals away from breaking the franchise record for goals which is currently held by Eric Hunter. Jansen Harkins recorded his th 100 career assist on December 15th in Seattle. Harkins is now just 42 assists shy of the all-time record which is currently held by Troy Bourke. Cougars goaltender Ty Edmonds is one victory away from being tied for second in all-time victories for a Prince George th st cougars goaltender. His 55 career victory on December 1 against Portland helped move him past Real Cyr. Ahead of him now are Billy Thompson (64) and Scott Myers (95). Tuesday, January 19, 2016 – Game Notes Continued… BRIGHT FUTURE: The Cougars were well represented at the 2015 Mac’s AAA Midget Tournament in Calgary. 10 Cougars prospects represented their respective teams. Ethan O’Rourke (Cariboo Cougars), Ryan Schoettler (Lloydminster Bobcats) and Joel Patsey (Cariboo Cougars) were all selected by the Cougars in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft while 2015 draftees Jackson Leppard (Vancouver Northwest Giants), Jonas Harkins (Cariboo Cougars), Tyler Ho (Cariboo Cougars), Reid Perepeluk (Cariboo Cougars), and Liam Ryan (Vancouver North East Chiefs) had an impressive first showing at the tournament. Jeremy Gervais (Cariboo Cougars) and Brandon McClintock (South Island Royals) were both listed earlier this season by the Cougars and also gained valuable experience competing at the Mac’s Tournament. ‘400’ FOR HOLICK: On November 2 Cougars Head Coach Mark Holick coached in his 400 career WHL game. Through 431 career th games (Kootenay, Prince George) Holick has posted a record of 212-181-38. Holick was named the 11 Head Coach in Cougars history in January, 2013. Prior to arriving in PG, Holick served as the head coach of the Syracuse Crunch (2010-2012) of the AHL and spent the three seasons before that with the Kootenay Ice. With Kootenay, Holick’s team made the playoffs in all three seasons and during the 2009-10 season after posting a record of 43-24-5 Holick was named WHL Coach of the Year. Holick’s 215 games behind the Cougars bench ranks him third in franchise history behind Dean Clark (262 games) and Ed Dempsey (440). th COUGARS ACQUIRE LUKE HARRISON: On November 25 , 2015 Cougars General Manager Todd Harkins announced that the Cougars had acquired 20-year-old forward Luke Harrison (W. Kelowna, BC) from the Brandon Wheat Kings in exchange for a ninth round selection in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. Harrison (6’1”, 204 pounds), a veteran of 219 career regular season games comes to the Cougars after spending the majority of his playing career with the Victoria Royals franchise (94 games) and the Kamloops Blazers (89 games). This season Harrison also dressed in seven games with the Spokane Chiefs and six games with the Brandon Wheat Kings. In 40 games this season (with Kamloops, Spokane, Brandon and now Prince George) he has tallied seven goals and six assists. In 23 games with the Cougars, Harrison has recorded three goals and six assists. COUGARS ACQUIRE NICK McBRIDE: On November 4th the Cougars acquired 1997-born goaltender Nick McBride (Maple Ridge, BC) in a trade with the Prince Albert Raiders. In exchange, the Prince George Cougars parted with a second round pick in the 2017 WHL rd Bantam Draft. McBride is 6’3” and checks in at 185 pounds. He was selected 23 overall by the Raiders in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. Over the course of his 76 game career he has put together a record of 34-29-1-3. His career goals-against-average is 3.19, his save percentage is .901 and he has two shutouts. In January, 2015 McBride suited up for Team Orr at the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game and helped guide his team to a 6-0 shutout victory over Team Cherry. In May, 2015, McBride was awarded the Darryl K. Seaman Trophy which is awarded to the WHL’s Scholastic Player of the Year and in August he attended training camp with the Los Angeles Kings. Earlier this season McBride was ranked by Central Scouting in their Preliminary Players to Watch List. HARKINS SHINES DURING THE CHL CANADA RUSSIA SERIES: Cougars forward Jansen Harkins represented the WHL in the 2015 CHL th th Canada Russia Series that took place Monday, Nov. 9 (Kelowna) and Tuesday, Nov. 10 (Kamloops). Harkins scored a goal in each game en route to two Canada victories over their Russian foes. Canada took Game 1 on Monday by a 7-3 score and the next night they held on for a 4-2 victory. The 2014-15 Cougars MVP was originally selected by the Cougars second overall in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. Last season he led the team with 79 points (20G, 59A) in 70 games. So far this season Harkins has scored 11 goals and 23 assists and has 26 points in his past 28 games. Harkins is the fourth Cougar in the past five seasons to represent the WHL and Canada at this event with others being: Troy Bourke in 2013 and both Brett Connolly and Charles Inglis in 2010. THREE COUGARS RANKED BY NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING: NHL Central Scouting updated their preliminary Players to Watch list for the 2016 NHL Draft and three Prince George Cougars cracked the list. Defenceman Josh Anderson (Duncan, BC) forward Brogan O’Brien (Prince George, BC) and goaltender Nick McBride (Maple Ridge, BC) each received ‘C’ grades. Anderson was selected third overall in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft and last season as a rookie registered two goals and two assists and racked up 52 penalty minutes. O’Brien was acquired in a trade last January with the Kelowna Rockets and currently leads all Cougars in rookie scoring, and goaltender Nick McBride has gone 9-4-0-1 in 13 appearances since joining the Cougars in a trade with Prince Albert.
