Heading into tonight’s matchup against the Kelowna Rockets the Cougars are nine points ahead of their point total and five wins ahead of their victory total from 2014-15. One of the Cougars final five games will be played at home while four more will take place on the road including tonight’s game in Kelowna. BACK-TO-BACK: For the first time since 2006 and 2007, the Prince George Cougars have clinched a berth in the WHL Playoffs in back-to-back seasons. With the Tri-City Americans falling last night against Kamloops, the Prince George Cougars officially punched their ticket to the WHL playoffs, and did so four games faster in 2015-16. Now it’s just a matter of determining who the Cougars will face on Round 1. Heading into tonight’s game the Cougars hold a one point lead over Kamloops for third place in the B.C. Division and if the playoffs were to begin today, the Cougars would face Kelowna in Round 1. Other potential first round matchups include: Victoria, Seattle or Everett. COUGARS-ROCKETS: Tonight at Prospera Place the Prince George Cougars will clash with the Kelowna Rockets for an eighth and final time in 2015-16. So far this season the Cougars are 2-4-1-0 against the Rockets and are 1-2 against them in games played in the Okanagan. In seven games this season against the Rockets, Jesse Gabrielle (2G, 4A) leads all Cougars with six points. Between the pipes, Ty Edmonds is 2-3 against the Rockets and has posted a save percentage of .911 with a goals-against-average of 2.84. Dillon Dube and Tyson Baillie each have 13 points against the Cougars. WITALA ‘CHASING’ HISTORY: February 3rd in Prince Albert, SK, Cougars forward Chase Witala became the all-time leading goal scorer in franchise history. At 12:21 of the third period Witala ripped a shot past Rylan Parenteau of the Prince Albert Raiders to secure his 32nd goal of the season and the 112th goal of his career, which moved him past former captain Eric Hunter who had previously held the record. For his career, Witala has now scored 119 goals and 116 assists for 235 points. With five games remaining in the season Witala is now just two points shy of surpassing Troy Bourke (236 points) for the all-time franchise lead in points. Witala is also two games shy of 300 for his WHL career. LEADING THE PACK: Chase Witala (39G, 36A) lead the team in points with 75. Witala also leads the team with 10 power play goals and two hat-tricks. Jesse Gabrielle leads the Cougars in goals (40), the entire WHL in shorthanded goals (7), and tops the team with multi-point games (23) and goal scored at home (25). Defenceman Tate Olson (8G, 38A) leads all Cougars d-men with 46 points. Cougars defencemen Sam Ruopp lead the team in plus-minus with at +22. Colby McAuley is tops on the team with 146 penalty minutes and leads the WHL with 16 fighting majors. Brogan O’Brien leads all Cougar rookies with 18 goals and 37 assists. ROSTER BREAKDOWN: Currently the Cougars roster sits at 26 players: Two goalies, nine defencemen and 15 forwards. Three are 20, four are 19, 10 are 18, six are 17, and three are 16. 16 of the 26 players were selected by the Cougars in the WHL Bantam Draft, six were acquired via trade, two were added to the 50-man protected list and two were selected in the CHL Import Draft. Nine are from B.C., five are from Saskatchewan, four are from Alberta, four are from Manitoba, along with one each from Ontario, the United States, the Netherlands and Slovenia.

Wednesday, March 9th, 2016 – Game Notes Continued… COUGARS SIGN ADAM KADLEC: Prince George Cougars General Manager Todd Harkins announced earlier this month that 1999-born forward Adam Kadlec (Edina, MN) signed a Standard WHL Player Agreement with the Cougars. Originally selected by the Cougars in the 10th round (203rd overall) in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, Kadlec (6’2”, 179 pounds) started this season with the Boston Jr. Bruins 18U program in the U.S. Premier Hockey League. Last season Kadlec scored 16 goals and added 25 assists for 41 points along with 46 penalty minutes in just 25 games with the Jr. Bruins 16U team. Kadlec became the sixth player form the 2014 Cougars draft class to sign with the team joining Justin Almeida, Max Martin, Ethan O’Rourke, Peter Kope, and Ryan Schoettler. Kadlec made his WHL debut February 24th in Spokane. EDMONDS MAKES HISTORY: With a victory on January 23rd against the Kamloops Blazers Prince George Cougars veteran goaltender Ty Edmonds (Winnipeg, MB) earned his 65th career WHL victory, all of which have come with the Cougars. That 65th victory moves Ty Edmonds into sole possession of second place on the list for all-time victories by a Prince George Cougars goaltender which had previous been held by Billy Thompson (1999 – 2003 and 64 wins). Edmonds is now just 27 victories shy of surpassing Scott Myers (1996-2000 and 95 wins) for the all-time lead in wins. FOUR COUGARS RANKED BY NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING: Back in January Cougars had four of their players crack NHL Central Scouting’s Mid-Term Rankings list. Leading the way was defenceman Josh Anderson who was ranked 62nd out of all draft eligible North American skaters. Rookie forward Brogan O’Brien appeared 94th on the list and goaltenders Ty Edmonds (20th) and Nick McBride (29th) made the list for draft eligible North American goaltenders. In 39 games this season, Anderson has a goal, five assists and 86 penalty minutes. O’Brien leads all Cougars rookies in scoring with 18 goals and 37 assists. Edmonds has a record of 21-14-2-0 with four shutouts and Nick McBride is 12-10-1-1 with a shutout since joining the Cougars after a trade with Prince Albert. In addition to the four roster players, the Cougars also had three of their college prospects: Riley Tufte (17th), Dennis Cholowski (48th), and Rem Pitlick (141st) ranked. BRIGHT FUTURE: The Cougars were well represented at the 2015-16 Mac’s AAA Midget Tournament in Calgary. 10 Cougars prospects represented their respective teams. Ethan O’Rourke (Cariboo Cougars), Ryan Schoettler (Lloydminster Bobcats) and Joel Patsey (Cariboo Cougars) were all selected by the Cougars in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft while 2015 draftees Jackson Leppard (Vancouver Northwest Giants), Jonas Harkins (Cariboo Cougars), Tyler Ho (Cariboo Cougars), Reid Perepeluk (Cariboo Cougars), and Liam Ryan (Vancouver North East Chiefs) had an impressive first showing at the tournament. Jeremy Gervais (Cariboo Cougars) and Brandon McClintock (South Island Royals) were both listed earlier this season by the Cougars and also gained valuable experience. Ryan Schoettler won a Silver Medal, the tournament plus-minus award and was named a tournament all-star for Lloydminster. Schoettler signed a Standard WHL Player Agreement with the Prince George Cougars earlier in January, 2016. DID YOU KNOW: On December 8th against Kootenay, Chase Witala became the first Cougar since Blake Robson in 2002 to record back-to-back hat-tricks. Jansen Harkins recorded his 100th career assist on December 15th in Seattle. Harkins is now just 38 assists shy of the all-time record which is currently held by Troy Bourke (152) and on February 24th in Spokane he suited up in his 200th career WHL game. Ironically on the same day (February 24th, 2016) that Jansen Harkins suited up for game #200, his younger brother Jonas Harkins dressed in his first ever WHL game. Jesse Gabrielle became the youngest Cougar ever to reach 40 goals in a season when he scored at 5:58 of the second period of last night’s game. Quinn Hancock, Todd Fiddler, Blair Betts, Eric Hunter, Derek Halldorson and Brett Connolly are the other Cougars who have reached the 40 goal mark during their respective WHL careers.
