Braydon Blight (D) Number: 3 Position: Defence Shoots: Right Height: 6.01 Weight: 180 Blighter Growing up in the southwestern part of the province of Ontario, young Braydon Blight has the opportunity to play in a number of great associations on the way to making the Ontario Hockey League. Listing his home town as St. Mary’s, Ontario, Blight is one of four 1995 birth years on the Club and one of eleven rookies in the line-up for the Frontenacs after the January 10th trade deadline. Last season, the 6’ 1”, 180 pound right shooting defenceman played his minor midget hockey with the Huron Perth Lakers, netting eight goals and 19 points in 47 games, along with 103 minutes in the sin bin. His abrasive “in-your-face” style got him noticed by the Black and Gold scouts. In early May, the OHL Priority Selection was held and the Frontenacs had a first, no second, and two third round choices. After working himself up the draft lists of many teams around the OHL, Blight heard his names called out in the third round, 52nd overall. (The Fronts selected Mitchell Fitzmorris with the first of their two third round picks at 46th.) He was also the first defenceman the Club chose. “I was surprised, but happy,” said the Grade 11 student at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School. “I knew that Kingston had spots open and I knew if I worked hard I could earn one.” Blight and his parents did not have to wait until the end of August to make their way to the Limestone City as usual custom, but instead had the opportunity to be introduced to the K-Rock Centre facility, billets, education advisors and staff, along with the media on June 11th.

continued from previous page ... “That was great,” said the Frontenacs #3. “It gave me a chance to see everything and get over the nerves of coming to camp. Plus I got to meet the other rookies like me,” he added. Training camp came and went in September and Blight made the team on the determination and aggressive style that got him selected. Now 40 games deep into his blossoming OHL career, Blight has had the opportunity to reflect on his first campaign. “The biggest thing is that all these guys are good. I know I’m 16, but there are some huge guys in the league and even on our team and they know how to hit and fight and score,” said the rookie rear guard. “I just have to play a simple game and not try and do too much,” added the St. Mary’s native. The first year blueliner has also had a couple of firsts outside of his appear on the line-up card on October 2nd. (Blight missed the start of the regular season and the first five games to his freshman year as he was suspended for a blow to the head on Bulls rookie and agitator Mack Lemmon in an exhibition game in Wellington in mid-September.) Blight scored his first OHL goal in his 39th OHL game when his point shot found the back of the net against the visiting Oshawa Generals. Immediately mobbed by linemates, Trevor Morbeck fished the puck out of the back of the net as a lifetime souvenir for Blight. “That was pretty cool,” said the laid back defenceman. “Now all we need is Tess and Smitty to score and everyone on our team with have one,” chirped Blight in a good natured fashion to his goalless rookie cohorts. The game ended in a 2-1 victory in overtime for the Black and Gold and for his efforts, #3 was named the game’s third star. Off the ice it has been a transition as well, as “Blighter” is billeted with Jim and Lori Peach, who also billet rookie defenceman Andrew Tessier. “They’ve been great,” said Blight. “I mean it’s nice to have a home away from home and they’ve done that for me and Tess (Andrew Tessier).” With the steep on-ice education matching the transition to a new school, new friends, new city and new way of life, Braydon Blight is surely someone that next years crop of rookies will look to for advice.
