Trevor Morbeck (RW) Number: 12 Position: Right Wing Shoots: Right Height: 6.02 Weight: 197 Cheesehead Growing up in Jackson, Wisconsin, Trevor Morbeck loved to play hockey and loved to watch his first hockey hero play; his older brother Zach. Six years his senior, Zach would set the wheels in motion for the younger of the Morbeck clan to make his pilgrimage to the Great White North, the Mecca of hockey. In 2005, Zach left the friendly confines of the Cheese State after being recruited by Marty Abrams to come play in the Ontario Provincial Junior League for the Wellington Dukes. “I was 11 when he left, and it was the first time the realisation set in that I wouldn’t see him everyday,” said the third year veteran of the OHL. “I do remember making the long drive with my parents to see him play though,” said Morbeck as his eyes glossed over in a “faraway-memory” glance. The drive from Jackson, WI to Wellington, ON is well over 1200 kilometers, with of course a border crossing to boot thrown in. The older brother played four seasons with the Dukes, playing 193 games, scoring 72 goals and 147 points with 153 minutes in the box. After his career finished in Canada, Zach returned to play at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and now coaches a minor midget team. “We kept in touch and he was always encouraging,” said the Frontenacs’ #12. “He also taught me what I would need to get to the next level,” he added. Playing his minor hockey in his home state, “Morbs” joined Team Illinois U-16’s where in 74 games played he netted 48 goals and 109 points along with 51 penalty minutes. He was also a very highly sought after U.S. College prospect. “With my brother playing in Canada, I knew the system was the best that was going to get me to ultimate goal,” said the 18 year old right winger. In the 2009 OHL Priority Selection, the Soo Greyhounds under GM Dave Torrie selected Morbeck in the

He has a late birth date and he’s a big kid. As he matures, we think he’ll be a powerful winger who has good hands, can skate and score some goals. But next season is going to be an adjustment from what he’s used to.” Playing his first year of junior, the Jackson native appeared in 57 games, scored five goals and 13 points along with 56 minutes in penalties and a +4 rating. He also appeared in all five of the Soo’s play-off games, but was held pointless. His sophomore season started out well, with two points in his first three games, but never really found his groove, finishing the season again with 57 games played, scoring 10 times adding 10 assists with 33 minutes in the box and a +2 rating. “It was disappointing and frustrating, but I knew going into my third year, and my NHL draft year, things would be different.” Unfortunately Morbeck’s start to the season was not a “positive” different; he started the season and quickly saw that his year was not progressing as envisioned. After 13 games, with only a single assist to show for his efforts, “Morbs” realised he needed a change. Queue Doug Gilmour and a move to the Limestone City, a Gilmour moved second year right winger Dylan Staples to the Soo for the third year vet. “I wasn’t very happy that I was on the fourth line,” said Morbeck. “But the team was winning, so it was working for us. It’s frustrating being a third-year guy. It’s my draft year and I’m on the fourth line,” he told the Soo Star in October after the trade to Kingston. Starting off with a bang with his new Club, the newly minted #12 picked up two goals and two assists in a three game western road swing against Windsor, Saginaw and Plymouth and added a tilt as well. However, chemistry with linemates where still hit and miss until the January 10th trade deadline. That’s when the line of Billy Jenkins-Ryan Kujawinski-Trevor Morbeck hit stride. In a five game stretch in mid-February, the line put up 30 points between the three of them, each with 10 points. “Hey, we just clicked,” said a smiling CheeseHead. (A CheeseHead is a Green Bay Packers fan). “Here’s hoping it continues and here’s looking forward to next year,” he added. And here’ to seeing Trevor Morbeck back for another season with the Black and Gold.
