A Word from the President
Sandi Wiseheart, Interweave Knits KWKG Executive 2014-2015: These are the people who volunteer to make your Guild the best it can be
As I drove, at 7:00 am on a frosty Saturday morning to catch the Knitters' Guild bus to the Knitters' Frolic in Toronto, I was thinking of my mother-in-law. At a time like that she would turn to us with a big smile on her face and with a laugh in her voice she would say, "How earnestly we strive for pleasure.". This was the comment that she reserved for times like the one when we sat at the outdoor picnic table at the campsite eating our Thanksgiving dinner - in the snow. Or when we were all blue with cold from our traditional swim in Lake Huron on the Victoria Day weekend. Thanks to Dee Anne, our past president who was our volunteer bus driver, we arrived early in spite of traffic and road closures. The sensory treat of all the yarn, colour, patterns and samples was overwhelming. Since I had not yet knit everything that I had bought at the Frolic last year, I was determined to keep my hands in my pockets and just look not buy. My resolve lasted until lunch time. Maybe the temptation to shop was revived by my sandwich and water. Maybe it was the free sample of Blue Faced Leister yarn from Fleece Artist/Hand Maiden. Maybe it was finding something perfect for a gift. Then ... my hands were out of my pockets and I was ready to shop. In the end, I bought something just for fun and I will see what I am inspired to make with it.

President's Message continued from page 1 Back at the bus - as we boarded the bus for the trip home, Dee Anne admired the purchases that each of us had made. She called it our yarn tax. We had more fun on the bus ride home as we compared notes and purchases with our seat and aisle mates. Some keen knitters were already working on new projects. I came home with ideas for more potential purchases at our Knitters'' Fair in September and the resolve to complete more projects so that I can buy more yarn in the future! Knitting is my perfect hobby. Portable. Practical. Beautiful. Sensual. Challenging. Fun. Pleasurable. No need to be earnest while striving for this pleasure at all. See you at our May meeting and I hope to see you all again in September as we begin and celebrate our 30th year and 30th anniversary as the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters' Guild.

Program Update: Last Month: Susan Fohr Susan provided a wonderful talk discussing how each project became a passion. She started to knit because it was expected of her at the Black Creek Pioneer Village, but she soon found herself knitting more and more. Susan also brought some samples of her work. Who knew history, even art history could be so interesting!
April Speaker: Sandi Wiseheart Sandi Wiseheart's Wild Ride With Yarn started when she was very young: She sweat through her first swatch at age eight, and her first cardigan (set-in sleeves!) by age 10. She designed her first fitted sweater at 15 for her best friend, and frankly, it was a nasty hot mess. Despite that unfortunate past, Interweave generously hired her to be managing editor of Interweave Knits, Interweave Crochet, and Knitscene. That seemed to go fairly well, so Interweave then set her loose on the internet as the founding editor of Knitting Daily. Currently, Sandi writes, designs, and talks to anyone who will listen about anything from sheep to shawl and worm to quilt. She and her wife Melody are very excited to announce that they just bought their first home in Canada. (Yes, there will be a party. Stay tuned.)

Membership Update: It's the end of the year, and the end of my tenure as Director of Membership for the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters' Guild. I've enjoyed chatting with all of you at the membership table, but it's time for some new friendly faces to greet you. Don't forget that you can drop off your membership form for next year at the May meeting!
Iris This month's door prize is a bright green sock tube made by Guild Member, Kirsten Dyer, with a glowing royal blue Madelintosh Unicorn Tail. What are sock tubes and Unicorn Tails? Kirsten knits up tubes on her Circular Sock Machine, so you don't have to do the boring part of knitting the sock. Put in a lifeline, make a few small cuts, and you're ready to test out new heel, toe and cuff patterns. You're not just limited to socks, either-try out legwarmers, arm warmers, or let your imagination go wild! Check out some examples in person at Shall We Knit? Unicorn tails are miniskeins of Madelinetosh's Tosh Merino Light yarn. At 52 yards each, they're perfect for adding a pop of contrast to your project.
2015 Knitters’ Fair: Volunteers We need your help at the Fair! This is a huge event that takes a lot of work to run, and we couldn’t do it without over 100 volunteers like you. If you are planning to come to the Fair anyway, we hope that you will stay an extra couple of hours to volunteer, which has the added bonus of getting you in for free! We have roles that involve chatting with people or not; sitting or standing; staying in one place or seeing it all. Please contact Erin with your preferred time and role, at
[email protected]. She will also be at the Guild meeting with a signup sheet.

Library Update It's been a great year everyone! I hope you found something new and fun in a library book. I had a good time searching for the most interesting requests, and hunting down the newest releases. But, I'm ready to pass the torch, and I hope whomever takes the reins enjoys themselves just as much. A quick reminder to please make sure you bring back any books you might have checked out in case they've been on hold. Also, any books borrowed in May don't need to be returned until September's meeting. May you all have an enjoyable summer, get a little knitting done, and I'll see you in the fall!

Getting to Know Your Guild: the Raffle Table
The Raffle Table is a fun way to try your luck at winning some knitting related prizes. Every month the table is set up at the beginning of the Knit & Chat shortly after 6:30. Tickets are available to both members and guests and can be purchased 3 for $1 or 50 cents each. Ten to fifteen prizes are laid out for your perusal and available to be won at the end of the evening. Alfie dutifully purchases the prizes from knitting stores, fairs and a wholesale show near Barrie every year. The prizes are a variety of notions, notebooks, accessories and books of knitting patterns and projects. Some prizes are generously donated by members or come to us as surplus books from the Guild Library. Prizes are purchased with money made from the sale of the raffle tickets, so the more you buy the more variety of prizes available...and the more chances you have to win! Speaking of winning, at the end of the evening the guest speaker (or a volunteer) is asked to draw the first winner. Each winner draws the next winning ticket when they come up to collect their prize. Multiple prizes can be won if your name is drawn more than once - and this often happens! We're happy to run the Raffle Table as a way to have some fun and add to every knitter's stash of goodies. If you have any suggestions for prizes or want to donate something, come over and see us at the Raffle Table!

Yarn Table
Volunteer Corner
The yarn table is a great way to get rid of any yarns you don't want to make room for new stash. Just set prices and bring a list of your yarns/quantities/prices with your name on it. Bring your change and don’t forget to scope out the yarn table for new-to-you bargains, too!
Volunteering is a great way to meet fellow members. Opportunities arise from time to time for helping out at a particular meeting or event. If you are able to help out, please contact Erin McKee, the volunteer coordinator, during a meeting or at

Knitting Nonchalantly: We are just a small group of people who like to socialize with knitting needles in hand. We are a group that has lots of fun and never takes itself too seriously! We meet every Thursday from 4-6pm at 7 Shores in Waterloo (on Regina), though to be honest, we are often gone by 520pm. We are a diverse group welcoming of all abilities, walks of life and interests. None among us are master knitters/crocheters, but anything we do know, we are happy to share with someone who asks. We value that it is a small, quiet group and like that there is an openness to people just sitting and chatting. Not everyone feels like knitting for the entire time - or at all! We would encourage anyone interested in joining our group to stop by and check it out! Friday Shall We Knit? from early afternoon until closing in Waterloo. Saturday All Strung Out 1-4 pm at 36 Quebec St., Guelph
