La Crescent Middle School/BCLC Board Report To: La Crescent –Hokah School Board and Superintendent Wilke From: Steve Smith – MS School Principal – Bluff Country Principal Date: March 2015 Middle School: ● Our school has recently wrapped up the food drive. We had great participation by all grades and are very thankful for the families that supported this worthwhile endeavor. We handed off a wide variety of needed items to the La Crescent and Hokah shelters. They indicated that their supplies are running low and this came at a very good time. ● 8 of our 5th and 6th grade students had the opportunity to present their poems and photographs to the Rotary club. They did a great job of not only presenting but also explaining the project and the value of working with the visiting artist. The Rotary club had some very good questions and our students had very thoughtful responses. Congratulations to those students and also their teachers for the hard work. ● The regional competition for science fair is complete and Ms. Gurholt had 7 of our students move on to state level competition. Good luck to those students. ● Our band and choir students completed their solo ensemble competition. Choir students in 7th and 8th grade had 11 events earn a 1st rating, 10 events earn a 2nd rating, and 2 events earn a 3rd rating. Our band students had 16 1st ratings and 5 2nd ratings. Congratulations to the students and their directors and a big thanks to the staff who have been helping above and beyond in Mr. Henke’s absence.
Testing: ● Some of our seniors completed the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) test recently. An outside team of proctors came to administer the test and were very complimentary of our students and their efforts. ● Planning for the ACT test is still underway and our juniors will take that test on April 28th. All 11th graders in Minnesota will be participating for the first time this year. This is part of the state initiative for college and career planning. BCLC: ● A big thanks to the BCLC students that helped us load and deliver the food drive items just before spring break.
