Voluntary School Fund

You may recall that I sent a letter last half term requesting a voluntary contribution of £5 for our Voluntary school fund. This is used to provide a range of extracurricular activities including visiting theatre groups, our annual pantomime and many other special treats for the children which cannot be funded through our ever diminishing school budget. I would like to take the opportunity to thank those of you who have sent in a contribution; so far we have received around £200. We are very grateful for this, however as we have 310 children at Longlands it is a slightly disappointing figure. Any further contributions would be extremely welcome as we want to be able to continue to provide all these additional activities for our children. Thank you.

4TH NOVEMBER 2016

Dear Parents and Carers Welcome back to a new half term at Longlands. This week the school has been a hive of activity during Enterprise week. Many of you will be aware that we are an Enabling Enterprise network school which means we have the opportunity to engage with a range of exciting projects and resources as well as the trips we make to large companies and organisations. The children in years 1 and 2 have created a postal service and are in competition with each other as to which service will have the most customers. In years 3 and 4 the topic has been food glorious food. The children have been very busy creating recipes, making pizza and designing posters. In years 5 and 6 the focus has been a business task in designing a service as opposed to a product. This has been really interesting to see and as I write the teams from Mr Ferguson’s class are hard at work finalising their services of such things as pencil sharpening, staff cup cleaning, hall tidying and a refreshment station. Sarah Ritchie our Enabling Enterprise education associate visited school on Wednesday to conduct a learning walk with me. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting all the classrooms and saw a great deal of evidence of the key enterprise skills such as listening, sharing ideas, aiming high and teamwork. I am so proud of all of the children’s efforts and it has been a pleasure to see the children enjoying success. (You will see evidence of innovative pizza making in the photo above). On Friday the 7th October, myself and Mrs Bishop, took five of our School Council members to City Hall. The children were chosen to be part of 'The Team London Young Ambassadors' programme. It is part of the Mayor of London's volunteer programme for schools, which aims to inspire young people to engage in social action, both in their schools and the local community. Our school is the only primary school in Bexley, along with three secondary schools, to be on the Borough Youth Panel. The programme is now working with over 1,800 schools in London and I feel along with the children it is a huge honour to represent our borough. We are looking forward to an exciting year of opportunities for our school and the wider community! Mrs Salisbury 1

Miro class trip to the National Portrait Gallery. The children in Miro visited the National Portrait Gallery the week before the half term break. Here are some examples of what the children had to say about the day: ‘The National Portrait Gallery, a gallery full of surprises! It was like entering a world full of history and intrigue. Great leaders and famous explorers, so much to explore and learn’ (Tallulah R) ‘My favourite part was when we made an abstract painting by swapping our sheets over, with some very interesting results! I would highly recommend going to the National Portrait Gallery’ (Jack C) ‘Firstly we explored the Tudors, we learned lots of interesting facts. My favourite painting was of Elizabeth I which I drew a sketch of’ (Kittie D)

Very best wishes for the weekend ahead. We would like to give you advance warning that once again we will be participating in the Save the Children fundraising Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 16th of December. We will be asking the children to bring £1 to school so that they will be able to participate in this fun event.
