Friday, September 28 • 4:30 p.m. Lakeside Field • Charleston, Illinois All-Time Series: EIU leads 4-1 Last Meeting: EIU 3, IPFW 1 (2006 in Fort Wayne) Last Meeting in Charleston: IPFW 4, EIU 1 (2003) Live Stats: www.EIUpanthers.com HOME THIS WEEK: With Western Illinois and IPFW visiting Lakeside Field this week, the Panthers will be playing their first back-to-back home games of the season. The Eastern-Western rivalry is the longest and most storied in program history. Tuesday’s game will be 46th all-time meeting, with EIU enjoying a decisive 31-10-4 edge in the series. The two teams have played at least once every year since 1982. Three current EIU soccer coaches have also played in past cross-state clashes. Adam Howarth and assistant coach Dino Raso both played at EIU during the early ‘90s, while EIU women’s coach Tim Nowak was a goalkeeper at Western in the late ‘90s. The Panthers won last year’s game in Macomb on an overtime goal from Brad Earl... Eastern is 3-0 against Summit League teams this season. EARL & GARTNER HONORED: For their parts in the three goals last week that lifted Eastern Illinois men’s soccer to victories against IUPUI and Kentucky, Brad Earl and Adam Gartner were named MVC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. Both players also received national recognition from notable soccer web sites. Earl was named to the College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week and Gartner garnered similar recognition from TopDrawerSoccer.com. Earl scored the game-winning goal in both EIU wins last week, highlighted by his second career overtime goal in the win at Kentucky. Gartner, meanwhile, assisted on both EIU goals in the home-opening win against IUPUI, setting up each score with a free kick. It was his second career multi-assist game... This marks the second time this season that the Panthers have swept the weekly honors from the conference office. Prior to this year, EIU had not had both the Offensive and Defensive honoree in the same week in the Valley era (1996-present). Mick Galeski and Chris Pearson grabbed the awards following the season-opening weekend. CONSECUTIVE GAME-WINNERS: By scoring the game-winning goal in consecutive matches, Brad Earl joined Brad Peters and Mick Galeski as active Panthers that have accomplished the feat. Peters has done it twice, including earlier this season in three straight games. BOUNCING BACK: Eastern Illinois rebounded from a winless week Sept. 10-16 with two more victories, improving to 6-1-1 on the season. That’s the program’s best eight-game start since the 2000 team opened the year 70-1. Probably most impressive though is that the majority of the wins have been in close games and contests away from Charleston. Wednesday’s 2-0 victory against IUPUI marked not only EIU’s first home game of the season, but also just the second win of the year that was not decided by one goal. GOLDEN BOY: Freshman Alex Harrison has been part of all three of EIU’s overtime goals this season. The Englishman set up Brad Earl’s score with 35 seconds left at Kentucky. Previously this season, Harrison scored the golden goal in the season-opening win over Belmont and recorded the assist on Brad Peters’ OT game-winner against Oral Roberts... The Panthers’ three overtime wins this season are the most since 2002.

VALLEY HIGH: Eastern entered the week leading the Valley in goals against (5), goals against average (0.58), shutouts (5) and corner kicks (54). Individually, meanwhile, Adam Gartner is tops in assists (4), Brad Peters leads the conference in game-winning goals (3) and Mark Hansen is the highest-ranked goalkeeper in GAA (0.59), save percentage (.857) and shutouts (4)... Nationally, EIU is 16th in goals against average. Hansen ranks in the Top 20 in the nation in GAA and save percentage. STARTING STREAKS END: Eddie Barnes and Evan Philpott both saw their consecutive games started streaks end when they came off the bench in the home-opening win agaisnt IUPUI. Barnes and Philpott had started 26 and 22 straight games, respectively... Mike Lewis and Patrick Mabeya started in place of Barnes and Philpott against IUPUI. Philpott, however, was back in the starting lineup (in place of Mabeya) Friday at Kentucky. GOING THE DISTANCE: With Mark Hansen and Eddie Barnes finally coming off the field in the home-opening win over IUPUI, Jeremy Maubach is now the lone Panther that has played every minute of the season. Maubach has played 1,721 consecutive minutes dating back to the 2006 win at IUPUI (in which he did not play). Hansen’s streak ended at 1,037 minutes when Nick Alexander replaced him in the second half vs. IUPUI. Barnes’ consecutive minutes run dating back to last year ended at 838... Besides Maubach and Hansen (766 minutes), Mick Galeski (741), Chris Pearson (714), Brad Peters (706), Brad Earl (689), Adam Gartner (669) and Nick Bonacker (666) are the other Panthers that have played 650-plus minutes this season. SHUTOUT STREAK ENDS: Loyola’s first goal Sept. 12 in the 2-2 draw on Chicago’s North Side ended EIU’s shutout streak at 436 minutes. It was the first goal the Panthers had allowed since Belmont scored in the third minute of EIU’s season-opening win on Aug. 31. Coincidentally, the contest was the combined highest-scoring draw for EIU since playing Northwestern to a 2-2 tie in nearby Evanston exactly four years ago to the day. Englishmen Score Both: Each of EIU’s goals in the draw at Loyola came from Englishmen. Mick Galeski and Alex Harrison both found the back of the net, marking the second time this season that a pair of EIU goals in the same game came from gents from across the pond. Chris Pearson and Harrison both scored in the season-opening win over Belmont. The English trio have accounted for six of EIU’s 11 goals so far. Busy Week For Hansen: Goalkeeper Mark Hansen saw his shutout streak came to an end last week, but not without making numerous saves in the process. The junior registered a career-high eight saves Friday in the loss at Dayton after stopping five shots Wednesday at Loyola. For his career, the 13 saves were his most in consecutive games... Hansen also recorded his 100th career save in the loss at Dayton. GALESKI’S EARLY GOAL: Mick Galeski’s score in the eighth minute of the draw at Loyola was the Panthers’ first goal in the opening 10 minutes of a match this season. Eastern scored in the first 10 minutes of match twice last year and went on to win both games. Chris Pearson found the back of the net in the fifth minute of the MVC Tournament win against Missouri State and Brad Peters scored 73 seconds into the victory against Georgia State. Fast Start: En route to claiming a second consecutive tournament title, this time at the UMKC Invitational, Eastern Illinois improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2000. Brad Peters was named the MVP of the four-team event and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Mark Hansen and Mick Galeski. The Panthers posted a pair of four-game winning streaks last year on their way to an 8-2 pre-conference record but prior to that, 2000 had also marked the last time EIU had posted a fourgame win streak. THREE STRAIGHT FOR PETERS & HANSEN: Juniors Brad Peters and Mark Hansen both recorded program firsts in the program’s MVC era (1996-present) during the three straight wins EIU posted against Lipscomb, Oral Roberts and UMKC. Peters scored the game-winning goal and Hansen shutout the opposition in all three contests. Peters joined Brad Earl and Alex Harrison as current Panthers with an OT score on their résumés with his golden goal against Oral Roberts. The gamewinner against UMKC, meanwhile, marked the second year in a row Peters has scored the lone goal in a 1-0 EIU win over the Kangaroos... Entering the week, Peters, Earl and Bradley’s Drew DeGurian are the only players in the Valley with multiple game-winners this season. HARRISON RETURNS THE FAVOR: Alex Harrison setup Brad Peters’ overtime game-winner against Oral Roberts for his first career assist. In essence he returned the favor after Peters made the pass that led to Harrison’s overtime game-winner in the season opener. MORE SUCCESS AWAY FROM CHARLESTON: Eastern was the last Valley team to play a home game. Playing away from Charleston hasn’t been a drawback for Adam Howarth’s crew as of late though. Dating back to their last home game of 2006 (Oct. 14 vs. Creighton), the Panthers are 7-3-2 away from Charleston. Additionally, Eastern has won five of its last six contests played at a neutral site.

on the
Pitch
PANTHERS OPEN WITH TEAM TITLE: Eastern Illinois opened its new season in impressive fashion, capturing the team title at Bradley’s City Centre Classic thanks to victories over Belmont and Lipscomb on consecutive days. Bradley also beat both teams but it was EIU’s 2-0 shutout of Lipscomb that gave the Panthers the best goal differential (+3) and the team title. Having since won the UMKC Invitational as well, Eastern has now won each of the last three regular-season tourneys it has played in, dating back to last year’s victorious weekend at the UW-Green Bay Nike Classic. Mick Galeski was named the Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tourney Team by Brad Peters, Chris Pearson and Alex Harrison. Those four players accounted for the team’s four goals. EIU SWEEPS FIRST SET OF WEEKLY AWARDS: With Mick Galeski (Offensive) and Chris Pearson (Defensive) receiving their first career MVC Player of the Week honors Sept. 4, it marked the first time in program history that the Panthers had both the offensive and defensive honorees in the same week. Galeski was recognized for his MVP performance at the City Centre Classic. He assisted on Pearson’s first-half goal against Belmont and scored himself in the second half versus Lipscomb. Besides his goal, which was his second key score at Bradley’s Shea Stadium, Pearson also played all 189 minutes at his center back position and helped EIU posted a +7 edge in shots on goal and +9 advantage in corner kicks. The Panthers gave up a very early goal (in the third minute against Belmont) but then shutout the opposition the rest of the weekend. OPENING THE YEAR WITH OT: After beating Belmont 2-1 in overtime in the season opener, EIU began the year with an overtime game for the first time since 1998. Alex Harrison scored the gamewinner with one minute remaining in the first OT. He became the first EIU player since Joel Del Toro in 2005 to score the game-winner in his first collegiate game... Following the double-OT win versus Oral Roberts (Sept. 7) and draw at Loyola (Sept. 12), Eastern is now 3-0-6 in its last nine games that have gone to overtime. The 2001 season marked the last time EIU played multiple OT games in a five-game stretch. The Panthers ended ‘01 with three consecutive overtime games, winning the final two. TREYS WILD IN PRESEASON POLL: Eastern was tabbed MVC Preseason Coaches Poll third in the MVC preseason poll and was one of three teams Team Poll Pts Starters R/L with three players selected to the Preseason All-Conference Creighton (5) 47 5/6 Team.
