EASTERN ILLINOIS at KENTUCKY (1-3-2 • 14-5-2 in ‘06) Friday, September 21 • 6 p.m. (CDT) UK Soccer Complex • Lexington, Kentucky All-Time Series: First Meeting

PANTHERS FINALLY MAKE HOME PREMIER: Having played – including the preseason – its first seven games away from Charleston, Eastern Illinois finally opens the home portion of its schedule Wednesday when IUPUI comes to town for the first time since 1999. The Panthers are the lone MVC team that has yet to play a home game. Eastern is 4-3 in home openers during head coach Adam Howarth’s tenure... Each of EIU’s first three opponents at home this season are Summit League schools. Eastern is already 2-0 against Summit (formerly known as the Mid-Con) foes, having beaten Oral Roberts and UMKC in Kansas City the weekend of Sept. 7-9. SHUTOUT STREAK ENDS: Loyola’s first goal Wednesday in the 2-2 draw on Chicago’s North Side ended Eastern Illinois’ shutout streak at 436 minutes. It was the first goal the Panthers had allowed since Belmont scored in the third minute of EIU’s season-opening win on Aug. 31. Coincidentally, the contest was the combined highest-scoring draw for EIU since playing Northwestern to a 2-2 tie in nearby Evanston exactly four years ago to the day. Englishmen Score Both: Each of EIU’s goals in the draw at Loyola Wednesday came from Englishmen. Mick Galeski and Alex Harrison both found the back of the net, marking the second time this season that a pair of EIU goals in the same game came from gents from across the pond. Chris Pearson and Harrison both scored in the season-opening win over Belmont. The English trio have accounted for five of EIU’s eight goals so far. Busy Week For Hansen: Goalkeeper Mark Hansen saw his shutout streak came to an end last week, but not without making numerous saves in the process. The junior registered a career-high eight saves Friday in the loss at Dayton after stopping five shots Wednesday at Loyola. For his career, the 13 saves were his most in consecutive games... Hansen also recorded his 100th career save in the loss at Dayton. GALESKI’S EARLY GOAL: Mick Galeski’s score in the eighth minute of the draw at Loyola was the Panthers’ first goal in the opening 10 minutes of a match this season. Eastern scored in the first 10 minutes of match twice last year and went on to win both games. Chris Pearson found the back of the net in the fifth minute of the MVC Tournament win against Missouri State and Brad Peters scored 73 seconds into the victory against Georgia State. GOING THE DISTANCE: Along with goalkeeper Mark Hansen, who posted his ninth career shutout in the win over UMKC, defenders Eddie Barnes and Jeremy Maubach have also played all 582 minutes of game action this season. Maubach has the longest streak of consecutive minutes played at roughly 1,522. He has been on the field for every minute of every EIU game since sitting out the 2006 win at IUPUI (Sept. 27). Hansen (962) and Barnes (838) have also not left the field for a considerable amount of time dating back to last season. Chris Pearson, meanwhile, came out of the game for the final two minutes of regulation versus Oral Roberts. It marked the first time this year he had left the field. Otherwise the sophomore defender has played 754 of the last 762 minutes of game action.

Fast Start: En route to claiming a second consecutive tournament title, this time at the UMKC Invitational, Eastern Illinois improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2000. Brad Peters was named the MVP of the four-team event and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Mark Hansen and Mick Galeski. The Panthers posted a pair of four-game winning streaks last year on their way to an 8-2 pre-conference record but prior to that, 2000 had also marked the last time EIU had posted a fourgame win streak. THREE STRAIGHT FOR PETERS & HANSEN: Juniors Brad Peters and Mark Hansen both recorded program firsts in the program’s MVC era (1996-present) during the three straight wins EIU posted against Lipscomb, Oral Roberts and UMKC. Peters scored the game-winning goal and Hansen shutout the opposition in all three contests. Peters joined Brad Earl and Alex Harrison as current Panthers with an OT score on their résumés with his golden goal against Oral Roberts. The game-winner against UMKC, meanwhile, marked the second year in a row Peters has scored the lone goal in a 1-0 EIU win over the Kangaroos... Entering the week, Peters and Bradley’s Drew DeGurian are the only players in the Valley with multiple game-winners this season. HARRISON RETURNS THE FAVOR: Alex Harrison setup Brad Peters’ overtime game-winner against Oral Roberts for his first career assist. In essence he returned the favor after Peters made the pass that led to Harrison’s overtime game-winner in the season opener. MORE SUCCESS AWAY FROM CHARLESTON: Eastern is the lone Valley team yet to play a home game. Playing away from Charleston hasn’t been a drawback for Adam Howarth’s crew as of late though. Since playing their last home game (Oct. 14, 2006 vs. Creighton), the Panthers are 6-3-2 away from Charleston. Additionally, Eastern has won five of its last six contests played at a neutral site. PANTHERS OPEN WITH TEAM TITLE: Eastern Illinois opened its new season in impressive fashion, capturing the team title at Bradley’s City Centre Classic thanks to victories over Belmont and Lipscomb on consecutive days. Bradley also beat both teams but it was EIU’s 2-0 shutout of Lipscomb that gave the Panthers the best goal differential (+3) and the team title. Having since won the UMKC Invitational as well, Eastern has now won each of the last three regular-season tourneys it has played in, dating back to last year’s victorious weekend at the UW-Green Bay Nike Classic. Mick Galeski was named the Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tourney Team by Brad Peters, Chris Pearson and Alex Harrison. Those four players accounted for the team’s four goals. EIU SWEEPS FIRST SET OF WEEKLY AWARDS: With Mick Galeski (Offensive) and Chris Pearson (Defensive) receiving their first career MVC Player of the Week honors Sept. 4, it marked the first time in program history that the Panthers had both the offensive and defensive honorees in the same week. Galeski was recognized for his MVP performance at the City Centre Classic. He assisted on Pearson’s first-half goal against Belmont and scored himself in the second half versus Lipscomb. Besides his goal, which was his second key score at Bradley’s Shea Stadium, Pearson also played all 189 minutes at his center back position and helped EIU posted a +7 edge in shots on goal and +9 advantage in corner kicks. The Panthers gave up a very early goal (in the third minute against Belmont) but then shutout the opposition the rest of the weekend. OPENING THE YEAR WITH OT: After beating Belmont 2-1 in overtime in the season opener, EIU began the year with an overtime game for the first time since 1998. Alex Harrison scored the gamewinner with one minute remaining in the first OT. He became the first EIU player since Joel Del Toro in 2005 to score the game-winner in his first collegiate game... Following the double-OT win versus Oral Roberts (Sept. 7) and draw at Loyola (Sept. 12), Eastern is now 3-0-6 in its last nine games that have gone to overtime. The 2001 season marked the last time EIU played multiple OT games in a five-game stretch. The Panthers ended ‘01 with three consecutive overtime games, winning the final two. BIG WEEKEND FOR PETERS: Brad Peters opened his junior campaign with a productive weekend, assisting on Alex Harrison’s overtime golden goal against Belmont and scoring a game-winner of his own against Lipscomb. He also registered a helper on Mick Galeski’s second-half goal versus the Bison to finish the weekend with a team-high four points. The junior forward has scored three goals in EIU’s last four games at Shea Stadium... Classmate Adam Gartner joined Peters with a pair of assists during the season-opening weekend, helping set up both game-winning goals scored by Panthers. Registering the first assists of their respective careers, meanwhile, were Evan Philpott and Jim Adee. TREYS WILD IN PRESEASON POLL: Eastern was tabbed MVC Preseason Coaches Poll third in the MVC preseason poll and was one of three teams Team Poll Pts Starters R/L with three players selected to the Preseason All-Conference Creighton (5) 47 5/6 Team. The selection of Brad Peters, Mick Galeski and Brad Bradley (1) 39 8/3 28 9/2 Earl gave EIU as many preseason picks as league favorites EASTERN 27 7/4 Creighton and Bradley. Eastern’s nine returning starters are Evansville 24 7/4 the most in the seven-team MVC... Peters and Galeski were Drake 6/5 First Team All-MVC and Second Team NSCAA All-Midwest Missouri St. (1) 21 10 8/3 Region selections last season. Earl garnered Honorable W. Kentucky (First Place Votes) Mention All-MVC recognition and took home three different weekly honors (including national kudos from College Soccer News and Soccertimes.com) in mid-September after a three-goal week that included the first overtime game-winning goal on the road by a Panther since 1998.

NEW MARKS SET IN 2006: Eastern established a number of new high-water marks in the program’s Valley era (1996-present) last season. The Panthers’ seven shutouts, 0.88 goals against average, 18 goals allowed and plus-110 edge in shot differential were all the best totals posted by an EIU team since joining one of the Midwest’s finest men’s soccer conferences. Additionally, Mick Galeski’s seven assists and Brad Peters’ four game-winning goals matched program records during the MVC years. ROAD READY: Eastern’s 11 wins last season were the second most in the MVC and the program’s highest total since posting 12 victories in 2000. Most remarkable about the 2006 win total was that eight of those 11 victories came away from Charleston. Eastern went 6-3-1 in true road games and also defeated Missouri State and Georgia State in neutral-site contests... The Panthers will once again play the majority of their games away from Charleston this season. Only six of EIU’s 18 currentlyscheduled games are home contests. However, those other 12 games aren’t all true road contests, as the team’s first three matches of the season will be played at neutral sites. PETERS BACK FOR MORE: After leading the MVC with 11 goals last season, forward Brad Peters returns for his junior campaign as one of the conference’s active leaders in goals and points. As a sophomore, the Metro St. Louis native posted a hat trick in the win at IPFW and scored twice in the MVC Tournament win over Missouri State. His hat trick was the 11th by a Panther in the program’s MVC era (1996-present). Meanwhile, he joined Jason Thompson as the only underclassmen during EIU’s Valley years to record a double-figure goal total... Captain Mick Galeski has registered six of his 14 career assists on goals by Peters, including five on the striker’s 11 goals last season. DEFENSIVE CORE RETURNS: The Panthers lost only one defensive starter from last year’s unit that surrendered an MVC-low 18 goals. Eddie Barnes was one of only four Panthers to start every game last season and handled corner-kick duties for much of the year. An injury limited EIU’s most experienced defender, Jeremy Maubach, early in the 2006 season but he returned to the starting lineup in time for the home opener and remained a starter for the rest of the season. He has started 44 of the 48 games in which he has played during his career. Finally, as freshmen Nick Bonacker and Chris Pearson both got an opportunity to start. Bonacker started 16 of the 18 games he played and Pearson got healthy late in the year and delivered an early goal in the MVC Tournament win over Missouri State... Eastern will again be carrying three goalkeepers this season, with Mark Hansen and Nick Alexander both having starting experience. Hansen has ended the last two seasons as the starter and posted two of the Top 5 goals against averages in the program’s MVC era. Alexander started six games as a freshman, shutting out Valparaiso and surrendering just one goal against in-state rivals Illinois-Chicago and Northern Illinois. He redshirted in 2006.
