EASTERN ILLINOIS (9-4-3, 1-2-1 MVC) at WESTERN KENTUCKY (2-10-4, 0-3-1 MVC) Saturday, October 27 • 1 p.m. WKU Soccer Complex • Bowling Green, Kentucky All-Time Series: Tied 5-5-3 Last Meeting: EIU 1, WKU 1 (2006 in Charleston) Last Meeting in Bowling Green: EIU 2, WKU 1 (2005)

an up-and-down week: The second week of Missouri Valley Conference play featured some highs and lows for Eastern Illinois. The Panthers matched their season high with four goals in the win against Missouri State Wednesday, but then gave up four goals in a frustrating 4-1 loss at Evansville Saturday. The positive four goals represented EIU’s highest total against MSU since 1991, and the most scored against an MVC opponent since 2005’s 5-1 victory at Evansville. Conversely, the four goals surrendered at Evansville represent the most EIU has given up to any opponent since losing 5-0 at Creighton in ‘05. Burned By Restarts: All six goals that EIU surrendered last week came off restarts. Missouri State scored off a pair of free kicks, and Evansville found the back of the net after two free kicks, a corner kick and a penalty kick. The first of the four goals at UE was an own goal. The Panthers have surrendered multiple goals in four straight games for the first time since 2004. Scoring Streak Ends: Brad Peters saw his consecutive games with a goal streak end at four in the loss at Evansville. The junior bookended the second four-game streak of his career with multi-goal games. His two goals against Missouri State Wednesday marked his second multi-goal effort in as many games against the Bears. In the four consecutive games that Peters scored, he accounted for six of EIU’s 11 goals. The junior began the streak with two goals against Valparaiso on Oct. 7. First Goal For Kupiec: Sophomore Jeff Kupiec scored EIU’s lone goal in the loss at Evansville. It was the first score of his career. He’s the fourth Panther to score his first goal this season, but the first non-freshman. He joined classmate Evan Philpott as current EIU players whose first career goal was registered in a regular-season Valley game. Philpott also scored against UE last season. Chris Pearson, meanwhile, scored his first goal against an MVC team (Missouri State), but it was in the 2006 Conference Tournament. ANOTHER SEASON WITH 10-PLUS: Brad Peters scored his conferenceleading 10th goal of the season in the win against Missouri State, reaching the double-figure plateau for the second year in a row. He’s the first Panther in the program’s Valley era (1996-present) to post back-to-back 10-plus goal seasons. Additionally, he joined Jason Thompson as the only EIU players with two such seasons since EIU became a Valley member. BIG GAMES FOR GALESKI & LEWIS: Brad Peters wasn’t the only Panther to have a big game in the win over Missouri State. Midfielders Mick Galeski and Mike Lewis were also big reasons why EIU scored four times and picked up its first Valley win of the year. Galeski scored EIU’s first goal and assisted on both of Peters’ goals. Lewis, meanwhile, recorded his first career multi-assist effort with helpers on Peters’ first goal and the insurance score by Darby Kehoe. SEVEN STRAIGHT GAMES WITH A GOAL: Eastern has scored in seven straight games, the team’s longest streak since the 2004 season when it scored in eight consecutive matches. The four straight MVC games with a goal, meanwhile, is the longest string since 2000 when the Panthers scored in five straight league contests... In 2004, EIU went just 2-6 in those eight straight games with a goal. Eastern is 3-2-2 during its current seven-game streak.

20-20 TEAMMATES: Mick Galeski has assisted on 11 of Brad Peters’ 22 career goals. Thus, it seemed fitting that the two players would record their 20th career goal and assist in back-to-back games. Peters scored his 20th goal in the loss at Creighton, EIU’s first score against the Bluejays since 2002. And Galeski recorded his 20th assist on the first of Peters’ two goals against Missouri State. Both players rank as the active leader in the Valley with their impressive career totals... Earlier this season Galeski broke the program record (previously 16) for assists in the Valley era (1996-present) and cracked the all-time Top 10 for helpers. Not only is the senior the first Panther to join the all-time list since Paul Agyeman (18 helpers from 1991-93), but even more impressively he’s the first EIU player to register 20 career assists since Garry Laidlaw (24 helpers from 1986-89).

1-2 IN THE VALLEY: A pair of Panthers enter the weekend ranked first and second in the conference in two different notable statistical categories. Brad Peters (26) and Mick Galeski (21) are 1-2 in points and Galeski (9) and Adam Gartner (8) are 1-2 in assists. Both Galeski and Gartner have eclipsed the single-season assist record for a Panther in the Valley era, which previously stood at seven and Galeski tied last season. Additionally, Peters leads the league in goals and Mark Hansen is the highest-ranked goalkeeper in GAA (0.84) and shutouts (4)... As a team, Eastern enters the weekend leading the Valley in shots (236), assists (39) and shutouts (7). MINUTE MEN: Mick Galeski leads the team in minutes (1,494 of 1,561) played, but Nick Bonacker sports the longest active consecutive minutes played streak (890). Bonacker has not left the field since the home-opening win against IUPUI on Sept. 19. Besides Galeski, Brad Peters (1,458), Bonacker (1,446), Adam Gartner (1,414), Brad Earl (1,382) and Jeremy Maubach (1,180) have also played 1,000-plus minutes this season... Among the players that have started less than half of the 16 games entering the week, Eddie Barnes (821) leads the way in minutes. Joe Ciucki has logged 200 minutes in six games since making his collegiate debut in the UAB game. Heartbreak City: Eastern Illinois was seconds away from earning its first standings point against Creighton since 1998, and first ever in Omaha, when Tony Schmitz scored a heartbreaking overtime game-winner with four-tenths of a second remaining. The loss ended EIU’s 12-game unbeaten streak (4-0-8) in contests that went to overtime. The Panthers’ last overtime loss was against Tulsa in late October of 2004. BIG WEEK FOR LEWIS: Mike Lewis enjoyed the most productive week of his career as EIU opened Valley play. He scored a go-ahead goal early in the second half against Drake and assisted on Brad Peters’ score at Creighton. His goal was the first of his career at Lakeside Field and in conference play. Head coach Adam Howarth called Lewis the most improved player on the team this season after the Missouri State win. ALEXANDER’S HOMECOMING: Omaha native Nick Alexander made five saves, one shy of his career high, in the double-overtime loss at Creighton. Even though EIU lost in heartbreaking fashion, it was a much better showing for Alexander than his first game back in Omaha. As a true freshman in 2005, he got blitzed by 14 first-half shots and surrendered four goals before being relieved at halftime... All three of Alexander’s saves in the draw against Drake were of the top-notch variety. He made a pair of big first half saves to keep EIU in the game and preserved the draw in the second overtime period with another key save. THE YEAR OF OVERTIME: Eastern has played in seven overtime games this year, in a program high in the Valley era. The Panthers are 3-1-3 in games that have gone longer than the regulation 90 minutes. Additionally, all of EIU’s three draws this season have ended in a 2-2 score. Eastern and Drake, meanwhile, have played to a draw in each of the last three years. SEVENTEEN STARTERS: While Mick Galeski, Brad Peters, Nick Bonacker, Brad Earl and Adam Gartner have been constants in the starting line-up this season, 17 different Panthers have started at least one match. The 2006 season saw 18 EIU players start at least one game. Jeff Kupiec is the latest Panther to make his first start of ‘07, taking the place of the injured Evan Philpott in the Creighton game. Jim Adee, meanwhile, has played the most minutes (252) of the eight Panthers that have not started this season. GALESKI HONORED: Mick Galeski put forth a strong showing during the final week of pre-conference play, recording his first career multi-goal game in the draw at UAB and finishing the week with three goals and two assists. He was recognized by both the Missouri Valley Conference and TopDrawerSoccer.com for his impressive performances. The senior captain captured his second MVC Offensive Player of the Week honor and was also selected to TDS’s Men’s College Team of the Week. The Panthers have had five MVC Player of the Week honorees this season, a new program high in the Valley era. Galeski joins Ryan Waguespack, Derrick Perry and Jason Thompson as Panthers to win a POW award twice in the same season.

REGIONALLy-RANKED FOES: Eastern has posted a 1-3-2 record against fellow regionally-ranked teams this season. The Panthers won at UMKC, lost at Dayton, Creighton at Evansville, and played UAB and Drake to draws. However, EIU has played five of those six matches on the road. Only the Drake match was hosted at Lakeside Field. Bradley also figures to still be ranked when it visits Lakeside Field on Nov. 3. Alexander STARTS SEVEN STRAIGHT: Goalkeeper Nick Alexander has started the last seven games. He has also played in all six home games thus far in 2007. Drake’s first goal in the 2-2 draw was the first goal he had allowed at Lakeside Field this season. Alexander’s start against IPFW was his first since 2005. He recorded his second career shutout in that win. The Omaha native redshirted last year... Mark Hansen is still very much in the mix and relieved Alexander in the second half of the Valparaiso win but has not played since. THIRD FRESHMAN TO SCORE: Darby Kehoe scored the third of EIU’s four goals in the win over Valparaiso, joining Alex Harrison and Ben Friesen as EIU freshmen to find the back of the net this season. Kehoe added his first career Valley goal in the win over Missouri State. PETERS’ SIX POINTS: Brad Peters matched his career high with six points thanks to his goals and two assists in the win over Valparaiso. It was his third career multi-goal game and the sixth time he’s had at least one goal and one assist in a contest. The junior enters the week as the Missouri Valley Conference’s active career leader in points (51). FIRST-MINUTE GOAL: Brad Peters scored the game-winner just 40 seconds into the Valparaiso game. It was the first goal by a Panther in the first minute of a game since Derrick Perry scored 55 seconds into a 2001 overtime win at home against Vanderbilt... Mick Galeski scored EIU’s other goal in the first 10 minutes of a match this season, finding the back of the net in the eighth minute of the draw at Loyola. Eastern scored in the first 10 minutes of match twice last year and went on to win both games. Chris Pearson found the back of the net in the fifth minute of the MVC Tournament win against Missouri State and Brad Peters scored 73 seconds into the victory against Georgia State. Looking Back at 2002: Eastern scored a season-high four goals in the win over Valparaiso. Additionally, Mick Galeski and Brad Peters both recorded a multi-goal effort during the first week of October. The 2002 season marked the last time EIU had scored at least four times at Lakeside Field and gotten multi-goal showings from two different players in back-to-back games. Jason Thompson and Jimmy Klatter accomplished the feat in wins at IPFW and versus Illinois-Chicago. Thompson scored six times total against UIC as EIU went on to win 8-0. Non-Conference Shutouts: Dating back to the start of the 2006 season, EIU has posted a 17-6-2 record in non-conference action. Thirteen of those 17 wins have come in shutout fashion. The Panthers have already matched last year’s total with seven clean sheets this fall, tying the program record in the Valley era (1996-present) Friesen Finds Net: Ben Friesen scored the game-winning goal in EIU’s 2-0 victory against IPFW. Current teammate Joel Del Toro was the last Panther whose first career goal proved to be the gamewinner in an EIU home victory. Del Toro accomplished the feat in the 2004 season opener against Butler. Friesen has played 268 consecutive minutes entering the opening week of MVC play. MAUBACH’S STREAKS END: Jeremy Maubach sat out the IPFW win, ending his consecutive games started (26) and minutes played (1,811) streaks, both of which dated back to last season. Other notable consecutive minutes played streaks that ended in September were those by Mark Hansen (1037) and Eddie Barnes (838), again both of which dated back to 2006. MOST GOALS BY A VISITING FOE: Western Illinois’ three goals in its Sept. 25 victory in Charleston were the most goals by a visiting team at Lakeside Field since No. 3 SMU beat EIU 4-1 in the 2004 season finale.

EARL & GARTNER HONORED: For their parts in the three goals the week of Sept. 17-23 that lifted EIU to victories against IUPUI and Kentucky, Brad Earl and Adam Gartner were named MVC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. Both players also received national recognition from notable soccer web sites. Earl was named to the College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week and Gartner garnered similar recognition from TopDrawerSoccer.com and Soccer America. Earl scored the game-winning goal in both EIU wins last week, highlighted by his second career overtime goal in the win at Kentucky. Gartner, meanwhile, assisted on both EIU goals in the home-opening win against IUPUI, setting up each score with a free kick. It was his second career multi-assist game... This marks the second time this season that the Panthers have swept the weekly honors from the conference office. Prior to this year, EIU had not had both the Offensive and Defensive honoree in the same week in the Valley era (1996-present). Mick Galeski and Chris Pearson grabbed the awards following the season-opening weekend. CONSECUTIVE GAME-WINNERS: By scoring the game-winning goal in consecutive matches (vs. IUPUI and at Kentucky), Brad Earl joined Brad Peters and Mick Galeski as active Panthers that have accomplished the feat. Peters has done it twice, including earlier this season in three straight games. BOUNCING BACK: Eastern Illinois rebounded from a winless week Sept. 10-16 with two more victories, defeating IUPUI and Kentucky, improving to 6-1-1 on the season. That marked the program’s best eight-game start since the 2000 team opened the year 7-0-1. GOLDEN BOY: Freshman Alex Harrison has been part of all three of EIU’s overtime goals this season. The Englishman set up Brad Earl’s score with 35 seconds left at Kentucky. Previously, Harrison scored the golden goal in the season-opening win over Belmont and recorded the assist on Brad Peters’ OT game-winner against Oral Roberts... The Panthers’ three overtime wins this season are the most since 2002. STARTING STREAKS END: Eddie Barnes and Evan Philpott both saw their consecutive games started streaks end when they came off the bench in the home-opening win against IUPUI. Barnes and Philpott had started 26 and 22 straight games, respectively... Mike Lewis and Patrick Mabeya started in place of Barnes and Philpott against IUPUI. Lewis has remained in the starting line-up since the home-opening win. SHUTOUT STREAK ENDS: Loyola’s first goal Sept. 12 in the 2-2 draw on Chicago’s North Side ended EIU’s shutout streak at 436 minutes. It was the first goal the Panthers had allowed since Belmont scored in the third minute of EIU’s season-opening win on Aug. 31. Coincidentally, the contest was the combined highest-scoring draw for EIU since playing Northwestern to a 2-2 tie in nearby Evanston exactly four years ago to the day. Englishmen Score Both: Each of EIU’s goals in the draw at Loyola came from Englishmen. Mick Galeski and Alex Harrison both found the back of the net, marking the second time this season that a pair of EIU goals in the same game came from two gents from across the pond. Chris Pearson and Harrison both scored in the season-opening win over Belmont. The English trio have accounted for 10 of EIU’s 27 goals so far. Busy Week For Hansen: Goalkeeper Mark Hansen saw his shutout streak came to an end last week, but not without making numerous saves in the process. The junior registered a career-high eight saves in the loss at Dayton after stopping five shots at Loyola. For his career, the 13 saves were his most in consecutive games... Hansen also recorded his 100th career save in the loss at Dayton. Fast Start: En route to claiming a second consecutive tournament title, this time at the UMKC Invitational, Eastern Illinois improved to 4-0 for the first time since 2000. Brad Peters was named the MVP of the four-team event and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Mark Hansen and Mick Galeski. The Panthers posted a pair of four-game winning streaks last year on their way to an 8-2 pre-conference record but prior to that, 2000 had also marked the last time EIU had posted a fourgame win streak. THREE STRAIGHT FOR PETERS & HANSEN: Juniors Brad Peters and Mark Hansen both recorded program firsts in the program’s MVC era (1996-present) during the three straight wins EIU posted against Lipscomb, Oral Roberts and UMKC. Peters scored the game-winning goal and Hansen shutout the opposition in all three contests. Peters joined Brad Earl and Alex Harrison as current Panthers with an OT score on their résumés with his golden goal against Oral Roberts. The gamewinner against UMKC, meanwhile, marked the second year in a row Peters has scored the lone goal in a 1-0 EIU win over the Kangaroos. PANTHERS OPEN WITH TEAM TITLE: Eastern Illinois opened its new season in impressive fashion, capturing the team title at Bradley’s City Centre Classic thanks to victories over Belmont and Lipscomb on consecutive days. Bradley also beat both teams but it was EIU’s 2-0 shutout of Lipscomb that gave the Panthers the best goal differential (+3) and the team title. Having since won the UMKC Invitational as well, Eastern has now won each of the last three regular-season tourneys it has played in, dating back to last year’s victorious weekend at the UW-Green Bay Nike Classic. Mick Galeski was named the Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tourney Team by Brad Peters, Chris Pearson and Alex Harrison. Those four players accounted for the team’s four goals.
