Tough Week: Not only did EIU drop both of its games last week, but the Panthers were also shutout at IUPUI and 21st-ranked Ohio State. The consecutive non-conference losses represent the program’s first since 2004. Eastern was last shutout in back-to-back games in 2006, against Creighton and Bradley. However, EIU had not suffered consecutive non-conference shutouts since 1997 (at Notre Dame and vs Bowling Green)... One of the most impressive aspects of EIU’s 12-win 2007 campaign was the Panthers did not lose back-to-back games. 1-0 REVIVAL: The 1-0 loss at IUPUI ended EIU’s five-game winning streak in game ending in 1-0 fashion. The Panthers’ last 1-0 loss was against Creighton in October 2006. The program’s last 1-0 defeat in a non-conference game came against Detroit in the ‘06 season opener. LATE START: With only five conference matches and the league opener not for another week, Eastern and Bradley are among the latest Division I schools in the country to open conference play. Only two schools start their league schedule later than October 15th. Adelphi (Oct. 18) and Howard (Oct. 25) of the Atlantic Soccer Conference both begin league play later. However, the ASC is only a four-team league this year and has only three conference matches. Additionally, the ASC champion does not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Coincidentally, Bradley defeated Howard in Peoria on Oct. 4... Valley play opens Saturday with two games on the slate: Evansville at No. 3 Creighton and Missouri State at Drake.

Multi-Goal & Assist Efforts
For Real, A Red Card?: Mike Picinich received the first straight red card for a Panther since 2006 in the 50th minute Sunday at Ohio State. He was sent off after colliding with the OSU goalkeeper on a 50-50 ball at the top of the 18-yard box. The red card came out after the ‘keeper took the brunt of the collision. A scoreless game at the time, the call swung the momentum in the home team’s favor and the Buckeyes went on score three times during 11-on-10 action. Picinich, a freshman midfielder, has started nine of the first 10 games and leads his classmates in minutes (555) entering the week... The red cards for Alex Harrison (at Evansville) and Chris Pearson (Bradley) last season were the result of two yellows. Brad Peters received the last straight red card, getting sent off at Bradley two years ago. HANSEN’S STREAK ENDS: Goalkeeper Mark Hansen recently posted a shutout streak of 259 minutes of game action. After surrendering a first-half goal (35th minute) in the draw at Northern Illinois on Sept. 14, he didn’t give up another one until the 45th minute of the loss at IUPUI. Wright State’s late goal in EIU’s 4-1 victory on Sept. 26 came with Mark Essary in the net... Hansen’s longest shutout streak last season was 436 minutes. Hats off to Peters: Brad Peters’ second career hat trick provided the majority of the offense in EIU’s 4-1 victory at Wright State Sept. 26. He scored his 30th career goal and 12th career gamewinner in the process. Peters has recorded two of EIU’s 12 hat tricks in program’s Valley era (1996present). His first was at IPFW in 2006... Alex Harrison, meanwhile, assisted on Peters’ second goal and scored himself in the second half, registering a goal and an assist in the same game for the third time this season. Everybody in on the Action: With Ryan Child and Nick Bonacker both registering their first assists of the season in the win at Wright State, 14 of the 18 EIU field players that have seen action this season have recorded a point. While Brad Peters and Alex Harrison have accounted for 12 of EIU’s 21 goals, the assists have been distributed more evenly. Eleven Panthers have registered at least one helper thus far. PETERS EARNS HIS FIRST PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brad Peters’ hat trick in the victory at Wright State was the second of his career, but it led to his first MVC Player of the Week award. Despite leading the Valley in goals each of the last two seasons, the senior forward had never received the weekly award from the conference office. He was also selected to the CollegeSoccerNews.com and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Teams of the Week for his three-goal effort... Stellar performances by his teammates were one of the reasons why Peters had yet to receive POW recognition. Twice last season, Mick Galeski one-upped Peters and took home the award. Earlier this year, Alex Harrison did likewise. Eastern has now had 10 MVC Player of the Week recipients since the start of the 2006 campaign. From 1998-2005, a Panther was honored 11 times.

Five Goals at Home: The Panthers erupted for five goals in their first-ever meeting with Central Arkansas Sept. 20. An 8-0 victory against Illinois-Chicago in 2002 marked the last time an EIU team scored five goals in a game at Lakeside Field. The Panthers had scored five times in a game on three occasions since then but all three big efforts had come on the road, including at IPFW earlier this month. Five different EIU players – Mike Lewis, Alex Harrison, Mike Picinich, Darby Kehoe and Mitch Welsch – recorded an assist in the UCA win.

Peters Pops Up in Top 10: With his five goals in the back-to-back wins against Central Arkansas and Wright State, Brad Peters has joined the EIU all-time Top 10 in goals and assists. He currently ranks ninth with 30 goals and 10th with 75 points. Jimmy Klatter, in 2005, was the last player to crack the career leaderboard in both categories... Peters has now posted six multi-goal efforts in his career.

ONE STREAK ENDS, ONE CONTINUES: Adam Gartner started his 50th consecutive match in the Central Arkansas win Sept. 20. However, he actually moved from midfielder to center back in place of the injured Chris Pearson, who had played every minute (560) of the first six games of the season. Pearson had actually played 740 consecutive minutes dating back to the 2007 MVC Tournament. With Pearson returning to the lineup for the Wright State game, a season-high 20 Panthers saw action in that win. GOING THE DISTANCE: Adam Gartner has played the entire 90 minutes in nine of the first 10 games this season, with the UMKC game representing the only contest in which he has left the field. In fact, he has played 910 of the 920 minutes of game action. Chris Pearson, meanwhile, went the distance in each of the first six contests this season. Among the field players, Brad Peters (6), Nick Bonacker (6), Patrick Mabeya (6), Evan Philpott (3), Alex Harrison (2) and Darby Kehoe (2) have also gone the distance on multiple occasions this season. CONFERENCE SUCCESS: Every Missouri Valley Conference team has put itself to the test, putting together challenging schedules from start to finish. As of Oct. 6, each school’s combined record of opponents is better than .500. Eastern’s 2008 opponents feature the most victories and second best combined winning percentage of the six MVC teams. Valley teams, meanwhile, have combined for a 34-20-7 (.615) record.

NIU TOURNEY RECAP: Eastern Illinois was unable to pick up a win but did salvage a draw against Northern Illinois at the rainy NIU Invitational in DeKalb Sept. 12-14. The Panthers were done in by a second-half hat trick in the loss to Northwestern. Goalkeeper Mark Hansen responded with a seasonhigh six saves against NIU. The Panthers also withstood NIU’s 18 corner kick opportunities. Chris Pearson and Brad Peters represented EIU on the All-Tournament Team. Gartner Joins the Top 10: Adam Gartner assisted on EIU’s lone goal at the NIU Invitational, registering the 17th of his career and moving into 10th place on the program’s alltime list. Prior to last season when the now-graduated Mick Galeski also joined the Top 10 assists list, those career leaders had remained stagnant since 1993. Another Pearson Score in Tourney Play: Center back Chris Pearson has not only played all 560 minutes of the first six games this season, but also found time to score the game-tying goal in the draw against Northern Illinois Sunday. It was his fourth career goal, three of which have come in tournament games. As a freshman, he scored against Missouri State at the MVC Tournament and accounted for EIU’s first goal of last season at Bradley’s City Centre Classic.
Burned by a Hat Trick: Matt Eliason scored all three of his team’s goals in 14th-ranked Northwestern’s 3-0 victory against the Panthers Sept 12. It marked the first time since September 2004 that an opponent posted a hat trick against Eastern. Nowaf Jaman of Western Illinois accomplished the feat in Macomb that season. During that time frame, an EIU player had accounted for three hat tricks: Jimmy Klatter vs. Longwood and at Evansville in 2005, and Brad Peters at IPFW in 2006. SCoRING STREAK ENDS: Northwestern’s shutout victory against EIU ended the Panthers’ regularseason scoring streak at 14 consecutive games. It marked the first time EIU was blanked in a regularseason game since Sept. 25, 2007 vs. Western Illinois. The 14-game streak was the longest of the program’s MVC era (1996-present). Previously, the longest MVC-era streak was 11, posted in 1998 when EIU scored in the first 11 contests of the season. Eastern compiled a 9-3-2 record during its 14game streak. In 2004, the Panthers scored in eight straight games but went just 2-6.... Eastern scored in each of the last 10 regular-season contests of the 2007 campaign. A shutout loss to Bradley in the ‘07 MVC Tournament ended the overall scoring streak at 11 games. GARTNER A CLASS CANDIDATE: Adam Gartner’s all-around excellence as a student-athlete has led to him being named one of 30 candidates nationally for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the award was launched during the 2001-02 season in response to the trend of college basketball players leaving college early to turn professional. In 2007 the sport of soccer was brought into the fold. Gartner was the lone candidate chosen from the Missouri Valley Conference this year.

ROAD TRIP SWEEP: The Panthers swept their Western Michigan-IPFW road trip the weekend of Sept. 5-7, outscoring their opponents, 7-2. Since the beginning of the 2006 season, Eastern has now posted 19 wins away from home in either road or neutral-site matches. However, the shutout victory at Western Michigan was the Panthers’ first in a true road game since defeating Kentucky in overtime in September of 2007... Eastern’s five goals at IPFW represent the team’s most in a game since also scoring five times in a 2005 win at Evansville. Adam Gartner scored in both games. HARRISON PLAYER OF THE WEEK: After scoring three times and setting up another goal as EIU swept its weekend road trip to Western Michigan and IPFW, Alex Harrison was named the MVC Offensive Player of the Week. The sophomore forward accounted for EIU’s final goal in the 2-0 win at WMU and two of the team’s first two scores in the 5-2 victory at IPFW. The Englishman currently leads the team with three goals and three assists, recording a point in each of the first four games. He also leads the league in points (9) while ranking second in goals and assists. Harrison scored three minutes and 31 seconds into the IPFW match, the quickest goal by a Panther since Brad Peters scored in the first minute against Valparaiso last year. He scored again 24 minutes later to record his second career multi-goal game. FRESHMAN’S FIRST GOAL A GAME-WINNER: Freshman Jeff Phillips scored EIU’s first goal in the win at Western Michigan and it proved to be the game-winner after the Panthers finished off the shutout. Phillips joined teammate Alex Harrison as active EIU players whose first career goal turned out to be the game-winner. However, when Harrison accomplished the feat last season, it was an overtime score in the first game of the year... In other freshman news, Mike Picinich has now started each of the first seven games of the year. Goalkeeper Mark Essary saw his first regular-season action against IPFW, playing the entire second half and being credited with two saves. He made his home debut in the Central Arkansas win. ASSISTING BOTH SCORES: Brad Peters assisted on both EIU goals in the win at Western Michigan, recording his third career multi-assist effort. He also setup a pair of his teammates’ goals in games against Valparaiso (scored by Darby Kehoe and Mick Galeski) last season and Olivet Nazarene (scored by Galeski and Brad Earl) in 2005. PANTHERS SPLIT OPENING WEEKEND: Eastern earned a split during its season-opening weekend, losing at Valparaiso, 2-1, but bouncing back with a 3-2 home victory against UMKC. Adam Gartner, Jim Adee, Mike Lewis and Brad Peters accounted for EIU’s four goals. Alex Harrison led the way with two assists, setting up the goals by Gartner and Peters. Peters Passes Thompson: Brad Peters scored the game-winning goal against UMKC for the third year in a row Aug. 31, becoming the program’s all-time leader in the Valley era (1996-present) in the process with 11 for his career. Peters entered his senior season sharing the record with Jason Thompson (2000-02). After assisting on EIU’s first goal of the game, it marked the eighth time as a Panther that he has recorded a goal and assist in the same contest. Another Goal vERSUS Valpo: Adam Gartner scored EIU’s first goal of the season 2:46 into the opener at Valparaiso Aug. 29. It marked the third time in the last four years he has found the back of the net against the Crusaders. While the goal was the seventh of his career, it was also his first since Oct. 25, 2006 at Valpo. When the Crusaders scored twice in the second half to rally for a 2-1 victory over EIU, it marked the first time the Panthers had lost a game when Gartner scored during his career. FIRST GOAL AT HOME: Jim Adee gave EIU a halftime lead against UMKC Aug. 31 by scoring his first career goal in the 17th minute. Of the other nine active players that have scored a goal at EIU, only three – Darby Kehoe, Brad Peters and Evan Philpott – also recorded their first career goal at home. PETERS NAMED TO HERMANN WATCH LIST: Brad Peters has been named to the preseason Watch List for the most prestigious award in collegiate soccer, the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy. The initial list is comprised of 48 NCAA Division I players, including the 2007 recipient, O’Brian White of the University of Connecticut. The Hermann Trophy winner is selected by DI head coaches that are members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The list is reduced to 15 semifinalists by a coaches committee in November, from which the three finalists are later chosen. The Missouri Athletic Club will announce the winner Jan. 9 in St. Louis... Peters was one of three Missouri Valley Conference players selected to the preseason Watch List, joining Creighton’s Byron Dacy and Andrei Gotsmanov. MORE ON PETERS: Brad Peters enters his senior season as the MVC’s active career leader with 23 goals. He has led the league with 11 scores each of the last two years, earning First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Midwest Region honors at the end of both seasons. In 2007, the St. Peters, Mo. native became the first player in EIU’s Valley era (1996-present) to record consecutive double-figure goal seasons. Eastern has posted a 15-2-1 record when he has scored a goal during his career... Peters was also named a Preseason Player to Watch by College Soccer News. GOING FOR 10-PLUS IN THREE STRAIGHT: A recent program renaissance has produced 23 victories and consecutive appearances in the semifinals of the MVC Tournament the last two seasons. If the Panthers can reach the 10-win plateau again this year, it would mark the first time since 1987-89 that EIU posted 10-plus victories for three straight seasons.
