Friday 9th October 2015 - Newsletter No 5

Message from the head Thank you to all of you who came to join in our celebration of thanksgiving for Harvest this morning. It was lovely to see so many of you supporting your children. I am sure you will agree the children were superb. Thank you to everyone who sent tins for the local soup kitchen and foodbank. The silver coins will be counted and sent to an international charity decided upon by Year 6. Have an enjoyable weekend.

CLASS NEWS Nursery: We are very proud of Nursery children this week for taking part in Harvest Assembly; for learning their song and sitting and listening so well. In Nursery this week each child has made a salt dough hand cast as part of our Senses Topic. Thank you for your support in stocking our shop too! Reception: This week in Reception, we have been focussing on the sense touch. We read the story 'We're going on a bear hunt'. In maths this week we have still been focussing on numicon and we are becoming very confident at ordering to 10. Year 1: In Year 1 this week we have been planning and writing our own story about a lost toy. We have used Talk4Writing to add actions to our story and made story maps to help with our ideas. In Maths we have been looking at length and practising our estimating and our measuring skills. We have also been learning about Harvest and practising our Harvest song! Year 2: This week we have looked at shape in maths, particularly focussing on 2D shapes and their properties. In English we have learnt how to write a non-chronological report including all the knowledge we have about pets. Year 3: This week in English we have been using persuasive language to write adverts and letters. The letters are to persuade our parents to buy us something we really want for Christmas - we really hope they manage to do the job! In Maths we have been learning about right angles, 2D shapes and measuring perimeter. In Science we have been investigating magnetic items around the classroom. Year 4: We have been problem solving using mental and written methods of subtraction. In English we have been developing our understanding of sentence structure using simple, compound and complex sentences. We have also used our song writing talents to write the lyrics for our harvest festival song. Year 5: This week we have been learning how to write legends - in preparation for writing our own legend next week. In Topic we looked at the weather in the Rainforest and in Science we've compared the life cycle of an insect to that of an amphibian and a human, including complete and incomplete metamorphoses. Year 6: This week we have been up-staging our adventure story openings and using them to write the whole of our adventure story. In maths we have been interpreting line graphs, finding lines of symmetry in 2D shapes and exploring the relationship between the 4 and 8 times tables. In Science we made our own mini compost bin and will be observing it over the next couple of weeks.

OWLS FOR THE HOUSE POINT OWL DISPLAY We are asking all the children to make an owl and bring in to school to go on the tree on our house points board. We look forward to seeing all the different owls roosting in our tree.

Attendance

School facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ StOswaldsCEAcademy You may remember that we were considering changing the school Facebook Page to a ‘Group’ to provide a more closed area to communicate with parents and carers. However, after discussion with Warwickshire E-Safety Advisers, we have decided to continue using the Page rather than create a group as a group will allow parents/ carers greater access to each other’s details, something that we feel would not be appropriate. We continue to closely monitor who ‘likes’ the School Page, and only share information and photographs that would be available on our more public School Website. If you have any questions, please see Mrs O’Grady.

AIRMAGEDDON Airmegeddon, a brand new CBBC entertainment show, where YOU get to customise & fly one of our incredible drones, is looking for fearless 9-14 year olds, and their friends, to take part. Please email [email protected] for an application form. Closing date is 16th October 2015.
