• There were no birthdays this week. • Skye will be our star student. Great job for showing excellent character and hard work!

Our Learning Math: We continued Unit 4. We learned about how to multiply with area, find area with the distributive property, find the area of an irregular shape, and problem solve with area. Next week, we will wrap up unit 4 with learning about volume and mass (i.e. the difference between grams and kilograms). We will then review the unit and take the unit assessment. Finally, we will begin Unit 5 with fractions by dividing regions into equal parts and finding the connection between fractions and regions (NF.1). Shared Reading: We continued working on the same skill focus: referring to parts of stories, dramas, and poems about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza and describing how each successive part builds on earlier sections (RL 3.5). We wrapped up Root Beer Sit In by describing its literary text type (story) and its structure (paragraphs). Then, we had a discussion about how the paragraphs build upon one another and how they were connected. Then, we read a poem, Stopping By the Woods on a Snowy Evening, and a drama, The Day Mrs. Parks was Arrested, and repeated the same process. We will wrap up this standard next Monday. Next, we will delve into analyzing the physical structure of nonfiction texts (text features)- learning how to differentiate between them in, addition to describing how they benefit the nonfiction text (RI 3.5). In grammar, we continued irregular and regular past tense verbs (talked vs. spoke). Next week, we will work on inflected endings (L.3.2E) sit to sitting, tape to taping, etc.) Writing: We continued to brainstorm our informational writing pieces. We learned how to brainstorm through writing a table of contents, experimented writing with different organization structures (cause & effect, bullet points, compare & contrast, etc.), and then we built our writing stamina by writing as much as we could about each chapter. Next week, we will continue drafting. Social Studies: We learned about citizenship and what makes a good citizen and how this relates to government through a read aloud and answering text-dependent questions. Next week, we will transition into science and learn about force and motion.
