• Kaila will be our star student next week. Great job for showing excellent character and hard work!! • There were no birthdays this week.
Our Learning Math: We learned about perimeter (MD 8). Students learned about perimeter and its definition, in addition to how to find perimeter, how to find a shape’s perimeter based on the attributes of a shape, identifying how different shapes can have the same perimeter, and finally finding the missing shape. We have begun reviewing unit 1 in preparation for our unit assessment. Next week, we will take our unit 1 assessment and begin learning about area (MD 5 & 6). Shared Reading: We concluded close read 3 with showing what we know about recounting a literary text and determining its central message based on the recounted key events. We talked about our pair work at the carpet from the previous week and clarified misconceptions. Students then took an assessment to prove their mastery of the skill. We also began close read 4 this week with our focus standard, again, being (RI.4): finding the meaning of unknown words in an informative text. We identified the strategies of good nonfiction word detectives and read aloud a text, Dancing Rainbows, and determined the meaning of tricky words within it. Then, we worked in groups to practice the skill and identify tricky words within a new text about spiders. We will conclude the group work next week and will also be assessed on the concept. We will also begin a new close read where students will begin building their knowledge on identifying the structure of a literary text and explaining how that structure builds upon itself as the story progresses (RL 3.5). We will also continue working on identifying the central message in a story through recounting it. Writing: We continued our memoir unit (W.3). We continued writing a memoir about a specific memory in our tradition. We also continued working through our drafting stage. Students learned about how to write an effective introduction, what a narrative’s body paragraph includes, and how to use temporal words (first, then, etc.) to make our writing flow. We will continue drafting next week. Social Studies: We learned landforms. Students learned about our different landforms and did an activity to identify landforms based on their attributes.
