In the last month, K-1 students in Green STEM class have learned all about energy; 2nd graders focused on what is air and air pollution; 3rd grade students are studying about plants and how to grow them in hydroponic systems; and our 4th and 5th graders are in the midst of a STEM Lab re-design project, where a winning team will have an opportunity to sit on the Steering Committee for the “official” build

In September, we started a Cafeteria Ranger recycling program where students in grades K-5 are nominated to be captains during lunch to help their fellow classmates sort their trash in the appropriate bins (recycling, landfill, and organics.) To-date, over 150 students have participated in this leadership role and we already see how much easier and faster students are recycling! Not only is this helping our environment, but we are developing leaders.

Upcoming Eco-Events:

How clean is our neighborhood? What kind of litter is on our block? How does litter affect our urban wildlife? Do the trees and plants look happy and healthy? What can I do about this? These are just some of the questions our Green STEM Afterschool Club kids are tackling. The Waste unit will culminate with letters and presentations to local officials on our recommendations and a stewardship activity. Don’t worry; we have a lot of fun too – with humming games and tableaus!

The Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse: Do you have some old electronics you’ve been meaning to get rid of? Don’t trash it! Bring it to the Gowanus E-Waste Center and if it’s salvageable, they will give a new life; if not they will recycle in an environmentally and socially responsible way.
