AUTUMN NEWSLETTER – NO 8 – Friday 4th November 2016 The Wednesday Word: ‘HEAVEN’ “We believe that there is another life because we have already begun to feel it here.” Pope Francis Dear Parents / Guardians, I hope you all had a wonderful half-term break. We were certainly lucky to have such fantastic Autumn weather! This week has clearly been much colder and a reminder to us all that winter uniform should be worn by all children – this means a shirt and tie in KS2. The vast majority of children look so smart in their uniform and are a credit to the school. CHRISTMAS NATIVITY PLAYS / LITURGIES: It’s that time of year again! Across the school we are looking ahead to Christmas, and the joys the season brings to the life here in school; a huge part of which is the Christmas performances from each phase. Reception and KS 1 will be performing their own Christmas stories as they have done for the past few years. As a result of our continued growth as a school, we have had to change the way in which we do our Christmas performances in KS2 this year, as we can no longer all fit into the space in the church. We will still use the church but we will be separating into lower and upper KS2. Years 3/4 will be leading an afternoon of Christmas Carols as they retell the story of Jesus birth, with the audience invited to join with them. Years 5/ 6 will be leading an evening of Reflective Christmas Liturgy. Details about tickets for Reception and KS1 performances will be available nearer the time. No tickets are required for KS2 performances. MESSAGE FROM THE FRIENDS: Thank you to everyone who helped with our end of term Cake Sale, and to all of you who donated and bought some wonderful cakes. We raised £206 so a good start to the school year. Our Christmas Bazaar will be held in school on Friday 2 nd December in the afternoon and we are now busy planning for this main event. We will be sending out envelopes shortly to each family which will contain raffle tickets/sweet bag/ letter as well as forms for your child to visit Father Christmas on the day. Berdene Kilbride is looking for people to help run stalls/set up/clear away on the day so if you would like to help then please let us know. A reminder as well that any Christmas Card design forms must be returned NO LATER than November 11th! Forms were handed out by the teachers and must be returned to your child’s class teacher. If you have any questions about this or anything else then please contact us

The sports day was based on the Rio Olympics and the Paralympics. Activities included handball, hoop games, hockey, bench games and basketball. We were awarded points for the activities and St Richard’s received the highest score of the day and were presented with the winners cup. All the teachers and children helped to make it a really fun day. A special mention to Elsie Heriot who was awarded sportswomen of the day!” Olivia and April- Bronze Ambassadors HOW WELL DO WE PREPARE OUR CHILDREN FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL? On Friday, 21st October, I was invited to St Philip Howard to celebrate a special Mass with our previous Year 6 children. It was wonderful to see them all again and I felt very proud of how much they had grown. It was also an opportunity to find out how well prepared they had felt when starting at St Philip Howard. The only aspect they had found a real challenge with coping with was the increase of homework given. They also suggested that we should give detentions at primary school if they forget their PE kits – food for thought!! We will be discussing their feedback at our next Deanery Headteachers meeting. NEW CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS: As a result of feedback from some parents at parents evening, we have put the spelling lists from the new national curriculum on the website (Parents – Curriculum – English – Spelling) as well as the interim frameworks for Years 2/4/6. Although these are the expectations for the vast majority of children, all children are at different stages of development. Therefore, some children may still be working on expectations from a lower year group. New curriculum newsletters for this half-term are also on the website (go to ‘Class Pages’). AND FINALLY……. This half-term, our focus across the school is “Be co-operative” – by working together, we can all achieve more! Have a good weekend, Mrs Hunn – Headteacher & Mrs Hogan – Acting Headteacher
