Minor Hurling
Under 16 Hurling League
Valley Rovers minor hurlers played Eire Óg in the premier 2 hurling league in Brinny on Thursday April 23rd at 7.15 pm. This was a good result for the team as they lined out without Chris O Leary and Andrew O Callaghan who are doing exams, and Aidan Sheehan who had his tonsils out earlier in the week. Sean O Regan opened the score with a point from a free in the 3rd minute which was cancelled out by a point from play from Eire Óg in the 4th minute. Colm Butler got a point from play in the 7th minute with Eire Óg levelling with a point from play in the 11th minute. Sean O Regan added 2 more points in the 15th and 20th minute before Gary Deane got in for a Valley’s goal in the 22nd minute. From there to half time Eire Óg got on top with 3 points from play in the 26th, 27th and 30th minute. This left the score at half time Valley Rovers 1. 4 to Eire Óg 5 points. The opening 10 minutes of the 2nd half was very even with Eire Óg hitting 4 points and Valley’s responding with points from Colm Butler, Aaron Lyons, a pointed free from Sean O Regan and a point from play from Pa Hurley. Another point from a free by Sean O Regan in the 11th minute was again cancelled out by a point from play in the 13th minute from Eire Óg. Valley’s opened up a 5 point lead in the 16th minute when Sean O Regan converted a penalty which was won by Aaron Lyons. Over the next 10 minutes both teams put over 3 points each with Sean O Regan, James Callanan and Colm Butler getting the Valley’s scores. Eire Óg closed the gap to 3 points in the 26th minute when they converted a penalty. In a tense final 4 minutes both teams got a point each to leave Valleys the winners on a final score of Valley Rovers 2. 13 to Eire Óg 1. 13. This was a very enjoyable game in the absence of an appointed referee. In his absence the game was well handled by our own Richie Butler whom we were very grateful for his assistance on the night. Next up for this team is a home game with Ballinhassig on Thursday April 30th. Panel for tonight’s game
This thoroughly enjoyable league game was played in Church Road and although Valleys ended up losing the points can still be happy with their display. Having given away 1.02 in the first three mins, they fought back to level with a goal from Adam Healy and a point each from Daniel Kenneally & Charlie Lyons before the Rockies stormed into a commanding lead at half time of 3.07 to 1.06. Three further points from Charlie and one more from Daniel were added before the break. The second half began with two early points from Blackrock and two from Daniel before a goal and two points in quick succession from Charlie left just four between the sides. A long range free from Sean Lynch, a point from play from Conor Keogh and a second Charlie Lyons goal left just the minimum in it with five mins left on the watch. Unfortunately a late Blackrock goal & point sealed their victory. Final Score Valley Rovers 3.12 Blackrock 4.14 .

Under 16 Football League St Michaels started with a goal and point before Conor Hurley pointed, Cathal Manning added a free before Adam Healy added a goal and a point. This was followed by points from Niall Lawton & Conor Keogh and with St Michaels getting last score it was 1.05 to 1.02 at half time. The second half was totally different with St Michaels racing into a lead scoring 2.04 from play and Valleys reply was five scores from Cathal Manning including three frees. St Michaels finished with two points to win by a goal. This was a game The Rovers should have won but silly mistakes caused their downfall. Final Score Valley Rovers 1.10 St Michaels 3.07.

Under 13 With a busy two weeks of hurling and football, Valley Rovers U13s did themselves proud and did extremely well in three games. They played two football games last week against Canovee and Glenville, both away, and proved very strong with scorelines of 5-20 to 1-4 and 10-7 to 1-3 respectively. They played Ballincollig in hurling yesterday and again did very well against a physical side. Darra Devine had to go into goal as our goalie went off injured after an off
Our u10 footballers took part in the latest Rebel Og Monster blitz in Clonakility last Saturday. There was a very large turnout of 28 players which enabled us to field 3 teams. All of the teams performed well and had some very tough matches. Some good scores and kicking off both feet was very pleasing to see and the players are also learning the importance of marking their opponents. We met teams from Sam Maguires, Kilbrittain, Barryroe, Sliabh Rua, Bandon, Kilmeen & Dohenys. As always the players were well supported by their parents and we would encourage the lads to keep practising at home. Valley Rovers 3-6 Barryroe 1-10 Valleys played their third league match at the weekend and have full points from all three games. So far this was the toughest outing with Barryroe only regraded from Senior A this season. Barryroe aided by the breeze in the first half started the brighter with some fine points. Gradually Valleys came in the game with points from Maryanne Hawkes Liz Buglar and Lisa Lynch. Shortly afterwards Eileen Foley found the back of the net but Barryroe finished the half strong with a goal leaving the half time score Barryroe 1-7 to Valleys 1-4. The first two scores of the second half were Rovers goals. Eimear O Regan was fouled in the small square and Lisa Lynch made no mistake from the resulting penalty. This was followed by a goal from Liz Buglar. Valleys had to fight hard from here to the final whistle to get over the line. Superb defending from all six backs held Barryroe to just three points for the second half. In the final few minutes two goal attempts from Cork Senior player Sheila Burns were cleared. Goalkeeper Gillian Harrington got her foot to one and Ena Coughlan cleared to safety. Valleys backs crowed out the second attempt resulting in free out from over carring. This victory was a great team effort with an excellent work rate for the entire match, Valleys lined out with four players from last year victorious U16 team Rachel O Sullivan, Marog Murphy, Michelle Cottrell and Laura Brew and Valleys half back line was made up of three first cousins Emily Palmer, Michelle Cottrell and Marog Murphy.
