Glimpses of Warmer Temperatures Had Consumers Dreaming of Spring Across North America. Rain, Snow, and Severe Weather All Made Headlines Throughout the Month. February in the U.S. trended the warmest since 1999, shifting consumers into an early spring mindset. The U.S. was wettest in 2 years, although snowfall was the least since 2012. Canada had its warmest February since 2012, wettest since 1965, and the least snowfall since 2013.

• Spring Training.
o Nationally, February week 1 was warmest in the U.S. since 2008, week 3 was warmest since 2011, and week 4 was warmest since 2000. Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, and Portland, OR all experienced record warmth during the month. o The New England region started the month warmest since 1991, while the Pacific region closed the month warmest since 1995 driving early sales of seasonal goods across the country. o Canada trended warmer than LY during all four weeks of the month. Halifax had its warmest start to February since 1983, Calgary was warmest since 1984 during week 2 and warmest since 1988 during week 3. The month closed with all major markets trending warmer than LY.

o Wet weather prevailed during February. The Mountain region began the month wettest since 1998; the South Atlantic wettest since 2010. Week 3 was wettest across the Mid-Atlantic since 2003; Miami was wettest since 2002, Raleigh since 2003, and NYC since 2006. Nationally, the final week of February was wettest since 1999, driven by the East where Philadelphia and Baltimore were wettest in 55+ years, Richmond since 1989, and Atlanta since 1997. o The exception was week 2, which had its least U.S. precipitation in over 55 years. o In Canada, week 3 was wettest in Vancouver since 1995; Quebec City since 1997.
• Ol’ Man Winter Wasn’t Ready to Let Go.
o Week 2 was the only week of February to trend colder than LY in the U.S. Despite the warmer comps, several snow systems left their mark on the month. A system moved from the Midwest to the Northeast during the latter part of week 1 bringing measureable snow to Minneapolis, Boston, NYC, and Philadelphia. Week 2 brought Nashville its most snow since 2003 and Cleveland its most since 2007. Buffalo recorded its most February week 3 snowfall since 2000, with Midwest markets including Chicago and St. Louis receiving measurable snowfall during the final week of the month. o In Canada, Halifax had its most snow since 1973 during week 2. Week 3 brought Ottawa its most snowfall in 55+ years, increasing demand for shovels and ice melt.

Madness in March! The Warmest March in 4 Years Drove Seasonal Demand Across North America. Spring Snow, Western Rainfall, and Severe Weather All Left Their Mark on the Month. March 2016 in the U.S. was the 2nd warmest March in over 55 years and warmest since the record warm March of 2012. The U.S. was wettest since 2011, but had its least snowfall since 1961. Canada also had its warmest March since 2012. Canada was wettest since 1972 which ranked 2 nd wettest in over 55 years, although snowfall totals were the least since 2013.

• Eastern Regions Dominated the Warmth Bracket
o Despite the West driving the U.S.’s warmest start to March since 2004, where the Pacific region trended warmest in 55+ years, the East drove the heat for the remainder of the month. o NYC trended warmest since 1990 during week 2; 1999 during week 5. Miami was warmest since 2003 during week 3; 1970 during week 5. Philadelphia was warmest since 2010 during week 4 and 1998 during week 5. o Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, and Ottawa all had their warmest weeks 2 & 3 in four years.

o Colder temperatures to LY kept seasonal comps limited in the West. Despite the colder vs. LY comparisons, most major markets trended warmer than normal throughout the month. o Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Portland, OR all had their coldest March week 2 since 2010. Week 3 was coldest in 3 years for Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Salt Lake City.
• Rain, Snow, and a Side of Severe Weather
o California welcomed much needed rainfall during the beginning of March. San Francisco was wettest during week 1 since 2009; Sacramento since 2010. Both were wettest since 2005 during week 2. Week 2 was also wettest since 2003 in Los Angeles and 2010 in San Diego. o Heavy rain caused devastating floods in the South Central region during week 2. Week 3 brought precipitation to the East with Detroit wettest since 1980, Philadelphia since 2004. Orlando was wettest in 55+ years during week 4 and Detroit ended March wettest since 1987. Canada had its wettest week 4 since 1972. Quebec City ended March wettest since 1978. o Week 1 brought several inches of snow to the Mid-Atlantic region. • A Case of the Blues for the East.
o May featured unseasonably cool temperatures across much of the East keeping seasonal purchasing at bay. The Mid-Atlantic and New England regions started the month coolest since 2005 with Boston coolest in over 55 years and New York City coolest since 1978. Week 2 trended coolest in Miami since 2005, Baltimore since 2008, and Chicago since 2010. The West South Central region had its coolest May week 3 since 1983, New England, Mid-Atlantic, and East North Central regions since 2008. Kansas City had its coolest 3 rd week of May in 55+ years, St. Louis since 1968, and Dallas, Oklahoma City, and San Antonio since 1983. o While the month ended coolest since 2011 for the U.S., a drastic shift to warmer temperatures across eastern markets during the final week of May helped to kick-start summer purchasing leading up to and over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Major markets including New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston reached 90ºF for the first time this year. o Canada experienced a cool May as well. The month began cool in the East with Halifax coolest since 2000 and Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City coolest since 2011. Edmonton had its coolest May week 2 since 2004, Calgary since 2009, and Toronto since 2010. Cool conditions continued into week 3 with Montreal coolest since 2002, Quebec City since 2005, and Toronto and Ottawa since 2008. Canada ended the month cooler vs. last year as well.

Chicago trended wettest since 1970 during week 2 and Nashville and Philadelphia were wettest since 2001 during week 3.

Dry Conditions Supported Outdoor Activities, Although Flooding Plagued Texas and West Virginia During the Month. The U.S. had one of its warmest June’s on record, driving demand for seasonal goods. Rainfall was the least since 2012, promoting outdoor activities. Canada had its warmest June in 2 years and driest since 2009, although rainfall was above normal.

Both the U.S. and Canada recorded their warmest July since 2012 and wettest since 2013. The warm temperatures continued to drive demand for seasonal goods across North America, while rainfall limited outdoor activities for some.

Seasonal businesses were jolly over the holiday shopping season as December trended much colder than the record warmth of last year. Both the U.S. and Canada were coldest since 2013, but slightly warmer than normal. The month was drier than a record wet 2015 in the U.S., but wetter than normal and snowiest since 2013. Canada was wettest since 2008 with the most snow since 2013.
