FOR PARENTS: COLOR FADING SCIENCE EXPERIMENT DEAR PARENTS, Today your child learned more about Ray and the Sunbeatables™ and their sun safety superpowers. In this activity, your child taped a Sunbeatables character to a piece of dark construction paper. The paper was placed in direct sunlight for at least one day, and the unprotected part of the paper became faded by the sun’s rays. The paper protected by the Sunbeatables character did not fade. Use the following questions to talk with your child: 1. Why did the paper that was not covered by the character fade? •

The paper faded because it was directly exposed to the sun’s rays without any cover or protection.

2. What can happen if we don’t protect or cover our skin? •

You may need to prompt a response with the following: skin will hurt or skin will sunburn. A sunburn is when our skin turns red from being outside in the sun too long, or being outside without sun protection. A sunburn can make your skin hurt.

3. What can we do to protect our skin from the sun? •

We can protect our skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen, long sleeves and long pants with socks and shoes, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses.
