Prince Albert Raiders Game Notes RAIDER REVIEW: The Raiders had a strong first period in Moose Jaw on Wednesday and opened in the scoring in the second with two goals. The Warriors fought back and scored two goals in the second to tie things up then added two more in the third period to take a 4-2 lead. Reid Gardiner scored with less than 1:30 to play to pull the Raiders within one but they couldn’t find the equalizer to send the game to overtime. The Raiders outshot the Warriors 30-19. GOALS: Kris Schmidli (11) and Reid Gardiner (26 & 27) SPECIAL TEAMS: The Raiders went 1 for 3 on the power play and allowed 3 goals on 3 opportunities on the penalty kill. HOMETOWN CAPTAIN: Prince Albert boy, Sawyer Lange has been named the new captain for the 2014-15 season. Jesse Lees joins Reid Gardiner and Jayden Hart as alternate captains. TAKING NOTICE: Four Raiders were named in the Midterm Rankings by NHL Central Scouting. Among North American Skaters, Brendan Guhle was ranked at #76 and Reid Gardiner at #104. Nick McBride was ranked at #13 and Rylan Parenteau at #31 for North American Goaltenders. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Simon Stransky is the younger brother of former Saskatoon Blade and Dallas Stars draft pick Matej Stransky. Matej proved to be a strong offensive player in the WHL and Simon is shaping up to be just as good, if not better; Simon has surpassed his brother’s first year point total already this season. So far in his rookie season, Stransky has 28 points (8G, 20A) through 50 games. His older brother had 26 points (14G, 12A) through 71 games in his rookie season with Saskatoon in 2010-11. TRADING PARTNERS: This season the Raiders and Kelowna Rockets have made three deals, two of which have been blockbuster trades. On January 6th the Raiders traded Edmonton Oilers’ prospect Leon Draisaitl to the Rockets for 18-year-old F Kris Schmidli, 18-year-old D Dalton Yorke, a 1st round pick in 2015, 4th round pick in 2016, and a conditional 4th round pick in 2016 or 17. The Raiders announced in December that they had traded Winnipeg Jets prospect Josh Morrissey and Las Vegas native Gage Quinney to the Kelowna Rockets for 18-year old forward Austin Glover, 19-year old defenseman Jesse Lees, a 2nd round draft pick in 2016 and a 3rd round draft pick in 2017. POINT LEADERS: Reid Gardiner (46), Jayden Hart (39), Craig Leverton (37), Jordan Tkatch (33), Simon Stransky (28), Sawyer Lange (22) EUROPEAN CONNECTION: 17-year-old Simon Stransky of the Czech Republic was selected by the Raiders 24th overall in the 2014 CHL Import Draft; he is joined by 18-year-old Kris Schmidli of Switzerland who was recently acquired from the Kelowna Rockets. REACHING MILESTONES: Sean Montgomery scored his first WHL goal on January 28th vs. Saskatoon. His goal ended up being the game winner. Montgomery scored a goal in 3 consecutive games from Jan. 28th through 31st. Reid Gardiner reached the 100-career point mark on Jan. 7th. He also has 16 multi-point games this season. Jayden Hart is approaching the 150 career point mark. He currently sits at 144 career points. Jesse Lees has 204 WHL games played and 94 career points, Jordan Tkatch has played 248 games and has 115 points Colton Heffley has played 294 games in his WHL career Craig Leverton is on pace to surpass his career totals in scoring. Previously, his career totals for points in 3 seasons were 37 points on 16 goals and 21 assists. Through 50 games this season, Leverton has 37 points on 15 goals and 22 assists. UPCOMING GAMES: The Raiders are in action again tomorrow night when the Calgary Hitmen visit Prince Albert. Tim Toutant will be performing following the game for a Come for the Game, Stay for the Party entertainment night. The schedule continues to be busy the following week as the green and gold visit Swift Current on Feb. 10th, host Spokane on Feb. 11 and Regina on Feb. 14th. They then head to Brandon on the 15th and return home for two more games.
Swift Current Broncos Game Notes VS PA: This is the fourth meeting of these two teams this season. The Raiders have been a tough nut to crack for the Broncos as they are 0-1-1-1 vs PA. The Raiders are 3-0-0-0 vs Swift Current. Jake Debrusk leads the Broncos with 2 goals in 3 games vs PA. Reid Gardiner has 6 goals in the 3 games vs The Broncos. This will be the 8th time this season newly acquired Bronco Jordan Thomson plays Prince Albert as he had 6 meetings with The Raiders as a member of the Saskatoon Blades this season. Standings: Swift Current is 23-23-1-4 which is 3rd in the East Division and 6th in the East Conference. Prince Albert is 21-30-1-0 which is 5th in the east division and 10th in the conference. Banged up Broncos: Dillon Heatherington is out 3-5 weeks. Coda Gordon has been out almost a month with a lower body injury and is now day to day. Jordan Harris and Cole Johnson remain out indefinitely. Carter Rigby returned this past Tuesday after being out with an upper body injury. When leading after 2: The Broncos have not lost a game in regulation when leading after 2 periods. They are 18-0-0-1. Hitting the score-sheet: Jake Debrusk has 26 points in his last 21 games and leads the Broncos in goals with 30. Colby Cave has 17 points in his last 17 games. Prime Time Broncos: Dillon Heatherington was a member of the Team Canada’s IIHF Gold Medal winning team. Jake Debrusk and Glenn Gawdin suited up in the BMO CHL Top Prospects game. Gawdin had an assist in a 6-0 Team Orr Win over Debrusk and Team Cherry. The Last Line of Defence: Bronco goaltender Landon Bow is 2 time Vaughn CHL goaltender of the week. Bow leads the WHL in shutouts with 6, which ties a franchise record. In NHL Central Scouting’s November ‘Ones to Watch’ Report, The 19 year old Bow entered the mix as a C prospect. Bow has made the most saves in the WHL with 1386 and has the league’s 4th best save percentage at .915. Special Teams: The Bronco Power-play is 41/188 good for 21.8% which is the 10th best in the WHL. The Bronco penalty kill is on the top of the league at 86.1%. On the road, the Bronco PK is 88.5%. League leader in Majors: Bronco forward Tanner Lesann leads the league in major penalties with 13. The A Team: Glenn Gawdin and Jake Debrusk recently moved up to A level prospects on NHL Central Scouting’s One’s to Watch list. Earlier this season they were both B level prospects. Landon Bow also jumped on to Central Scouting’s radar as a C level prospect in their latest rankings. Trade Tracker: This season, the Broncos traded 18 year old Dakota Odgers to the Vancouver Giants for a 5 th round bantam pick in 2015. The Broncos acquired 20 year old forward Carter Rigby from the Kelowna Rockets in exchange for a 2016 3 rd round bantam pick. The Broncos traded for defenceman Ayrton Nikkel (95) from Saskatoon for defenceman Cole Bevan (96) and a 7 th round bantam pick in 2015. In a late December deal, the Broncos added Griffin Foulk from Lethbridge in exchange for a 2016 conditional 8 th round bantam draft pick. The Broncos acquired Jordan Thomson from the Saskatoon Blades along with a 1st round bantam pick in 2016 for Brycen Martin and a conditional 5 th round bantam pick. At the trade deadline, the Broncos added 18 year old forward Miles Warkentine from Lethbridge for a conditional 7th round pick. Iron Men: Bronco captain Colby Cave suited up for all 72 games in 2013-14 and 2012-13. Jay Merkley, Jake Debrusk, Brycen Martin, Brett Lernout and Zac Mackay also made appearances in all 72 contests in 2013-14. Drafted Broncos: The Broncos have 4 players on their roster that have been drafted by NHL teams. Dillon Heatherington was a 2 nd round selection of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2013. Brett Lernout and Brycen Martin were drafted back to back in the 3 rd round of the 2014 NHL Draft by Montreal and Buffalo respectively. Broncos forward Coda Gordon was drafted in 2012 by the Calgary Flames, but went unsigned and is a Free Agent.
