RAIDER REVIEW: The Prince Albert Raiders (7-26-1-1) return from the holiday break to take on the rival Saskatoon Blades (1319-3-1) at the Art Hauser Centre, opening a mid-week home-and-home series. In the last game before the break, the Raiders were downed 4-3 by the Swift Current Broncos in Prince Albert. The Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from Loch Morrison and Max Martin. However, Kole Gable and Aleksi Heponiemi found the back of the net for the Broncos before the end of the period. In the second, Gable notched his second of the game to give the visitors a 3-2 lead. Austin Glover brought the Raiders back even late in the third period, making it a 3-3 game with 4:45 to play. About a minute later, Kade Jensen scored the game-winning goal for the Broncos. Ian Scott made the start for the Raiders, making 31 saves in the loss. VS. SASKATOON: This is the third meeting of the season between the Raiders and the Blades and the second at the Art Hauser Centre. The Blades have won the first two meetings of the season so far. 2016-17 SEASON SERIES RECAP Oct. 6/16 at SAS | SAS 2 PA 0 | L. Flodell (31 saves), J. Shynkaruk (1g), I. The 20-year-old centreman has registered at least a point in his past nine games, scoring six goals and adding seven assists in that span. Glover is now tied for the team lead in goals with 12 in addition to chipping in 14 assists. HOLIDAY TRADITION: This is the fifth consecutive season that the Raiders and Blades have opened the second half of the season at the Art Hauser Centre. The Raiders have won three of those four games against their rivals by a cumulative score of 16-8. AT THE WORLDS: Simon Stransky, Vojtech Budik and the Czech Republic opened the 2017 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship on a positive note on Boxing Day. The Czech Republic downed the defending champion Finnish team by a 2-1 score. They are back at it today at noon against Switzerland before having a day off on Wednesday. NEXT UP: The Raiders head down to Saskatoon on Wednesday night to close out the home-and-home series with the Blades at the SaskTel Centre. The next Raiders’ home game is on Friday night when the Regina Pats visit the Art Hauser Centre for a 7 p.m. contest. Tickets can be purchased at raiderhockey.com, in the Raider Office, or by calling 306-764-5348.

Tuesday, December 27th 2016 – 7:00pm at Art Hauser Centre, Prince Albert, SK Saskatoon Blades (13-19-3-1 – 30pts) 5th – East Division 9th – Eastern Conference PP – 30/171 = 17.5% (16th in WHL) PK - 109/147 = 74.1% (20th in WHL)
Prince Albert Raiders (7-26-1-1 - 16 points) 6th – East Division 12th – Eastern Conference PP – 18/150 = 12% (22nd in WHL) PK – 106/135 = 78.5% (12th in WHL)
Tonight… The Saskatoon Blades open up the back half of the season on the road against their arch rivals, the Prince Albert Raiders. This is just the 3rd meeting of the season for these two clubs, with the Blades leading the series 2-0. In fact, the Raiders have yet to score on Logan Flodell, who recorded a shutout in each of his 2 starts vs the Raiders this season. Ian Scott has been great at the other end of the ice for the Raiders, allowing just 3 goals in two losses to the Blades. Josh Paterson has 2/3 goals for Saskatoon against Prince Albert. Saskatoon needs a hot start to the second half of the season to get back into the payoff picture, and a home and home against the struggling Raiders is a great place to start. This is the first of 6 straight games within the East Division for the Blades, giving them a chance to gain some ground. The Raiders will also be without two key pieces on their roster, as Simon Stransky and Vojtech Budik are both playing at the World Junior Championships this week for Czech Republic. Immediate Impact… After the blockbuster trade between the Blades and Spokane Chiefs prior to the holiday break, both new players for Saskatoon suited up for two games against Brandon. Markson Bechtold scored a goal in his first period as a Blade and showed his gritty side with 8 PIM’s in two outings. Defenseman Evan Fiala didn’t make it onto the scoresheet, but his big physical presence on the back end is impossible to miss. Expect chemistry to grow rapidly for these two players on the roster, especially against the Raiders. Shynk in the armour… 20 year old forward, and Saskatoon native, Jesse Shynkaruk, has been enjoying his final season of junior in his hometown. Shynkaruk has 11 goals in 23 games this season, tied for 3rd in the league in game winners at 5. He’s also stepped into a leadership role and picked up the slack offensively as of late for the Blades who have been dealing with injuries and the flu bug. Shynkaruk has 7 points (4G – 3A) in his last 7 games.
Holiday Package Deal… On December 14th, the Saskatoon Blades and Spokane Chiefs completed a major trade which saw Blades captain ’97 F Wyatt Sloboshan, ’98 D Nolan Reid, and a 2017 3rd rd pick sent to Spokane in exchange for ’96 F Markson Bechtold, ’97 D Evan Fiala, and a conditional 6th round draft pick. Fiala and Bechtold joined the Blades for two games before the Christmas break. Bechtold is wearing #19 and Fiala is #47. Growing Rookies… 16 year old Michael Farren has 8 assists in his last 9 games, and also had a brilliant shootout winning goal over the Moose Jaw Warriors a few weeks ago. The rookie winger seems to score in bunches, and is now averaging just over half a point a game with 3 goals and 11 helpers in 27 games played this year. Chase Wouters is an extremely versatile 16 year old who earned a Silver Medal with Team Canada Black last month at the World U17 Challenge. Wouters has proven he is capable of playing in all situations, and in his last 9 games, he has a +2 rating to go along with 3 goals, 2 assists, and 6 PIM. Watch for Wouters who has been seeing time on the top power play unit recently. Saskatoon has also called upon 16 year old Matt Mosher for tonight’s game. This will be Mosher’s WHL debut after being selected 45th overall by the Blades in the 2015 Bantam Draft. Mosher currently plays for Delta Hockey Academy’s Midget Prep Wild team in B.C. Carrying the load… Braylon Shmyr has taken over as the Blades leading scorer and has found some consistency with 7 points (3G – 4A) in his last 6 games. Shmyr now has 23 points in 36 games this season, tied for the team lead with Mason McCarty who has been sidelined with a lower body injury since November. Inching closer… The Saskatoon Blades start the 2nd half of the season without 2 key offensive pieces in the lineup. Cam Hebig has yet to dress for a game this season and remains on a week-to-week status with an upper body injury. Hebig had 69 pts in 59 GP last season for Saskatoon. Mason McCarty put on the skates this week, but is still weeks away from joining the team in practice after suffering a lower body injury in late November. McCarty has 23 pts in 26 games this season, and is expected to return to action in early February. Back in blue… ’98 D Libor Hájek was released from Team Czech Republic at the World Junior Championships after attending selection camp and playing in the pre-tournament.
