Sacred Heart Reception Newsletter Issue 8– Friday 3rd November
We have had a lovely first week back at school after half-term. The children were really excited to see each other again and settled straight back into the school routine. This week we have had a Halloween themed day, and then moved on to looking at bonfire night and fireworks. During our Halloween themed day, the children scooped out pumpkins and made a range of meals with the seeds. They played in “witches sick” and picked out creepy crawlies with tweezers against the clock! During the rest of the week we have made fireworks pictures ,read and discussed the Guy Fawkes story and made name rockets to help us practise recognising and naming the letters in our names. Today we finished off our week by making sparkler biscuits...lots of fun and very tasty! This week we had our first Wow Wednesday session and the number of parents who visited our classrooms to look at learning journals was great! Thank You.
Reading Books This week we are sending home a reading book with each child. Some children might have picture books and others might have books with short words and sentences. The most important element of reading at home is that it is an enjoyable experience for your child. When you support your child as they read you could:
Check they can hold the book, turn pages and know that we read from left to right. Talk about the pictures and the story. Ask your child to predict what is going to happen next? Ask about how the characters are feeling and what they might say at certain points in the story. Some children might be able to spot some sounds they know. Some will be able to blend some sounds together to read short words. If your child struggles, it is more than acceptable to help them with words. Please ensure that reading books and diaries are put back in book bags daily in order to allow staff to read with children as and when the opportunity arises. Books will only be changed when a comment has been left in the reading record.
So...what has happened in Reception Class this week? The children’s favourite activity was making edible sparklers...
