GAME NOTES Going Bowling: With a defeat over Bethany, the Bearcats finished the regular season 6-4 overall and 5-3 in the PAC, earning a bid the the ECAC Southwest Bowl this week. It marks the first postseason appearance for the Bearcats since the 1949 season when SVC defeated Emory & Henry, 7-6, in the Tangerine Bowl en route to a perfect 10-0 season. Thank You, Seniors: 29 Bearcats will be playing their final games in the green and gold this weekend. This senior class has been an integral part of the resurgence of the Saint Vincent football program, having been a part of every win in the modern era (since 2007), dating back to 2008’s 23-22 win over Gallaudet. All-Bearcat Team: For the first time in his five seasons at the helm, Saint Vincent head coach Bob Colbert earned PAC Coach of the Year honors, while 13 Bearcats were named to the All-PAC teams. SVC had four First-Team selections, led by senior QB Aaron Smetanka repeating as the First-Team QB and being joined by OL’s senior Taofik Amokomowo and sophomore Darius McGhee and senior LB Armando Fortunato. Huey Loose: Against Bethany, sophomore RB Huey Ehredt rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries. In the process, he set a single-season modern-day record with six touchdown rushes this year and with 808 yards on the season is just 10 yards away from the single-season yardage record set by teammate Mike Kale in 2010. First Down Bearcats!: SVC has a total of 71 rushing first downs this season, tying the team record established last year. In total, the Bearcats have gained 183 first downs, including 100 passing and 12 via penalty.
2
“Aaron” it Out: Smetanka, the alltime leading passer in modern history, needs just 37 passing yards to tie his single-season record of 1,966 set in 2010. Additionally, with 104 yards through the air this weekend, he will top 4,000 yards for his career. In just two seasons with the program, he has become the first quarterback with more than 500 pass attempts. Teach Me How to Dougie: Junior WR Ricky Douglas enters the Southwest Bowl with a team-high 548 receiving yards, which ranks second all-time just 121 yards behind former Bearcat stand-out Tom Quirin. “AJ”: Senior LB Anthony Johnson, the all-time leading tackler in program history reached a couple milestones in the win over Bethany. With his sixth tackle of the game, he became the first player in the modern era to record 300 tackles. He finished the day with 15 tackles, marking only the second time a player has eclipsed 100 tackles in a season, matching his total from last year with 102 tackles. Do “Wirk”: With the Bison driving as the clock wound down, sophomore DB Dan Wirkowski recorded his fifth interception of the season to seal the win. He is now tied with freshman DB Darius Brown for the team-lead with five interceptions, a modern-day season record. Pick Six: In the first quarter against Bethany, sophomore LB David Ribero intercepted a pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown marking the second time this season that a Bearcat has record a defensive touchdown. Fortunato also record an 38-yard INT return for a touchdown at Geneva on Oct. 1.
