SVC stuns W&J on Homecoming, 35-27: Saint Vincent converted three secondhalf interceptions into touchdowns as it knocked off perennial-conference power W&J, 35-27. Sophomore DB Dan Wirkowski earned PAC Defensive Player of the Week laurels after posting seven tackles (three solo), two pass break-ups, a fumble recovery and a pivotal interception and 61-yard return to the W&J 22-yard line to set-up a game-tying SVC touchdown in the third quarter. The running back tandem of senior Mike Kale and sophomore Huey Ehredt combined for 175 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries as SVC posted a modern-day record four rushing touchdowns. On the afternoon, SVC picked off W&J a single-game record three times and accounted for four takeaways, which also ties a single-game high.

GAME NOTES Winning Ways: Last weekend’s win over W&J marked the Bearcats’ third win of the season, matching the modern-day record for wins set last season. After winning just one game in the first three seasons since the re-birth of the program, the Bearcats are 6-9 over the last two seasons. With its next win, SVC will reach four wins in a season for the first time since the 1960 team finished 4-1-3. “Wirk” it Out: Sophomore DB Dan Wirkowski earned PAC Defensive Player of the Week honors after the Bearcats stunned W&J, 35-27, on Homecoming weekend at Chuck Noll Field. The transfer from Clarion (Pa.) posted seven tackles (three solo), two pass break-ups, a fumble recovery and a crucial interception and 61-yard return to the W&J 22-yard line that set up a touchdown to tie the score, 21-21, in the third quarter. Bearcats of the Week: Dating back to the beginning of last season when Saint Vincent officially became a full-time member of NCAA Division III and the PAC, the Bearcats lead the conference with 10 Player of the Week selections. Thomas More and W&J are tied for second with eight selections a piece. Over that period, SVC has had the Offensive POW a league-high five times and is tied for the conference-high with four Defensive POW’s. Ground Grinders: With four rushing touchdowns against W&J, Saint Vincent set a new single-game modern-day record as well as a new season-high with 12 touchdowns on the ground. Sophomore RB Huey Ehredt leads the team with four touchdowns on the ground and is tied for the single-season team-high shared by Mike Kale in 2010 and Jairus Marlow in 2008. Kale’s Crusades: Kale already holds the modern-day, career-rushing record at Saint Vincent with 1,133 yards, but with his five-yard touchdown scamper against the Presidents, the 5-10 senior also moved into first-place with seven career scores.
2
“Aaron” it Out: QB Aaron Smetanka has posted just the second 1,000-yard passing season in modern-program history, eclipsing the barrier with his 200yard performance against W&J. Already the program’s all-time leading passer, Smentanka passed the 3,000-yard plateau against the Presidents and his career total now sits at 3,026 yards. Wide Open Race: Junior wide receivers Ricky Douglas and Christian Sutton are third and fourth, respectively, in career receiving yards with 662 and 661 yards. With at least 15 career games remaining, the tandem figure to be racing to become just the second receiver in program history to eclipse 1,000 yards receiving. The alltime leader in all receiving categories is former WR Sheldon Loughner (2007-10) who established the benchmarks with 76 receptions for 1,239 yards and 16 touchdowns in his career. Winning the Turnover Battle: SVC set a new single-game record with three interceptions against W&J. With a fumble recovery added in there, the Bearcats tied a modern-day record with four takeaways in the game for the first time since Nov. 6, 2010 against Westminter. 200 and Counting: Senior LB Armando Fortunato eclipsed 200 career tackles with his performance against W&J. He joins classmate Anthony Johnson as the only Bearcats to reach the career milestone. Johnson holds the record with 252 tackles while Fortunato has made 206 tackles.
