A FIP is an alliance of buyers, suppliers and producers that work together to improve a fishery, by: • Pressing for beGer policies and management • Voluntarily changing fishing prac1ces • Communica1ng their ac1ons with buyers
Why should we bother with FIPs? • Posi1ve way forward for fisheries that are currently unsustainable • Meets procurement requirements of leading retailers • Reduces risk in the supply chain
How FIPs Work Fishery Assessment: MSC pre-‐ assessment, IFFO RS gap analysis, FishSource profile, other third party assessment
Forma0on of a FIP: Stakeholders agree to join as par1cipants
FIPs must be transparent: • Clear evidence in the public domain for any claims of progress -‐ Beware the FIP police! • Regular repor1ng – “FIPs need facts!” • Communicate WHO is par1cipa1ng and WHAT the FIP has really done

FIP Felony 2 • Claims of progress must be supported by evidence in the public domain – “FIPs need facts”
FIP Felony 3 • Update your FIP profile regularly – what you did two years ago is of no interest!
