Davigel Procurement : Fish & Seafood Responsible Sourcing 2014 Key Data • Davigel = Food Service in France, Belgium, Spain and Italy • Total sales turnover 2014 = 649 Millions € • 26% sales = Fish & Seafood • 2014 figures: -‐ Raw material for the industry: = 100% frozen = 7.683 MT = 23,165 K€ Purchase T.O. -‐ Finished products . Frozen = 12.240 MT = 68,362 K€ P.T.O. . Chilled = 719 MT = 7,672 K€ P.T.O. ⇒ Total = 20.642 MT = 99,199 K€ P.T.O. Imported material + imported finished products = 11.800 MT = 57% all material & products purchased = More than 85 different species both wild and farmed bought from all over the world
Improve
Do Not Source Nestlé do not source list includes: Endangered or Cri.cally Endangered per IUCN Red List, Highly Destruc)ve Prac)ces, or sourced from an IUU supplier.
Stocks classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, fisheries whose management needs to be improved per scien)fic consensus and which are important for business.
Stocks classified as data deficient on the IUCN Red List.
Requires Nestlé business to source from an approved cer)fied source or from a source engaged in a credible improvement project or to ini)ate an improvement process, if none exists.
Responsible Sustainable Stocks which are classified as Least Concern or beeer on the IUCN Red List and whose management is considered adequate by scien)fic consensus. Products from sources cer)fied by the Standards which have been approved under these RSGs with relevant chain of custody cer)fica)ons.
Fishery or Farm improvement projects: Priori)za)on based on: • Importance for future business • Credible partners • Sufficient leverage (alone or with partners)
Stocks agreed by scien)fic consensus to be abundant or stable and well managed.
Products from MSC or ASC Cer)fied Sources with relevant chain of custody cer)fica)ons.
Davigel Responsible Sourcing Policy • The aim: « Establish a framework for the company’s engagement with suppliers = that all wild caught and farmed seafood come from responsible sources that are commieed to a process of con)nuous improvement towards sustainability » ⇒ Begin with the ones classified as orange in the Nestlé categories and among them specifically the ones with: -‐ Lack of data -‐ -‐ -‐ -‐
More cri)cal risk in terms of sustainability Importance for future business Credible and interested partners Sufficient leverage capacity (alone or with partners)
Why the U.S. New England Winter Skate fishery? • Important fishery for Davigel = 200 Mtons of Skate products (more than 600 Mtons round fish) per year • Classified 0 by SFP = lack of data + red by W.W.F. • Concentrated in terms of geographical fishing area ( = U.S. New England Atlan)c Waters and fishing harbours ( mainly New Bedford = Massachussets) • Limited number of actors who know each other very well and have been already used to work together to get the M.S.C. cer)fica)on for Dogfish = almost same actors – same fishing area – same fishing harbours • Davigel is an important historical buyer of frozen Skate products from this fishery, has been working with 3 among the main producers and may have then a leverage to convince them to enter into a F.I.P process. • We are op)mis)c that we may improve the situa)on rela)vely quickly
The Story of the milestone • Mee)ng in BOSTON Seafood Show in March 2014 = mee)ng with all suppliers separately • Mee)ng in BRUSSELS at E.S.E. in May 2014 = all suppliers together with S.F.P. and Davigel representa)ves => Agreement to develop a F.I.P. and on a plan: -‐ 1st = collect all necessary data and build the fishery profile in Fish Source => agreement as to the cost and how to split it -‐ Based upon these data, it will be possible to make a point on the exact situa)on of the fishery + a risk assessment and decide what to do next: F.I.P. or not? And if yes, how to start the process? Determine precisely what is actually the fishery = George Bank and Southern New-‐England + only gill-‐neters . Fish Source profile created by July 2014
What’s next? • Working with local capacity = Gulf of Maine Research InsTtute to ini)ate the F.I.P. process • 1st step = preassessment by G.M.R.I. to be split between the different actors = part of the process, to ensure if the M.S.C. route can be chosen and that there are no condi)ons on cer)fica)on • Stakeholder maping: who should be involved in the F.I.P. process? • Mee)ng in BOSTON scheduled for March 2015 with all stakeholders: -‐ Presenta)on of the situa)on as per G.M.R.I studies -‐ Are everybody OK to par)cipate and how? The costs? -‐ The aim? The process? = Where do we want to go and how? Which calendar?
Conclusions/ Lessons learned Geqng suppliers together takes coordina)on and pa)ence. Star)ng a F.I.P. can be a challenge but there are some steps to take and some strategies to implement: • FishSource profile is a good place to start. It’s anyway necessary to know where we are precisely before doing anything else. • Finding local capacity/consultants/N.G.O.s to help is crucial too. Trust and proximity are key words. Alone you can’t do anything. • Have always a clear view of what you aim at: M.S.C or not? Be always realis)c and adapt your goal to what is unanimously considered as achievable and profitable.
