Cornelius Brown leads the way at 6.7 boards per game. Antonio Butler adds 5.9 per game, followed by Frank Holloway with 5.8, Jordan Grady with 5.3 and Jamal Gatali with 5.2.
•
Mansfield owns a 14-11 advantage in the all-time series against Slippery Rock that dates back to the 1962-63 season. Slippery Rock has won the last three meetings in the series, however, including the most recent meeting, a 78-69 road win during the 2012-13 season. Slippery Rock owns a 73-37 advantage in the all-time series against Lock Haven that dates back to the 1957-58 season. The Rock has won the last 14 meetings between the two teams, including a 9476 home win during the 2012-13 season in the last meeting.
REYNOLDS MOVING UP •
•
•
Kevin Reynolds is ahead of all former SRU coaches in total wins through each season of his career. He won 21 games in his first year and through five years led all former coaches by 27 wins. Through six seasons, Reynolds had 117 wins, while the next best in SRU history through six years was Bob Barlett’s 93. Reynolds passed Barlett to move into third on all-time coaching wins list at SRU with the victory over Ohio Eastern earlier this week (127). He can move into a tie for second with Hank Baierl (144) with 17 more wins. The SRU record for coaching wins belongs to N.Kerr Thompson with 280 wins in 25 seasons (1919-47).
COMING IN HOT Slippery Rock enters the weekend with a 10-2 overall record and is riding a six-game winning streak in which it has outscored opponents 543-378. Included in that streak are four PSAC wins. The Rock is averaging 90.5 points per game and allowing 63.0 points per game in that stretch. Slippery Rock’s most recent game was a 110-64 runaway win over Ohio Eastern earlier this week in which 13 different players scored points. The Rock posted a +43 advantage in rebounding and pulled down 35 offensive boards. Frank Holloway and Cornelius Brown each recorded a double-double in just 16 minutes of play with Holloway scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 boards and Brown adding 14 points and 10 boards. Chaquille Pratt scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Antonio Butler chipped in 10 points and four assists.
PSAC WEST DOMINANCE The PSAC Western Division owned a distinct advantage over the PSAC Eastern Division in the last weekend of crossover games. The West went 14-4 on the weekend with only Kutztown winning both games and just East Stroudsburg and Lock Haven earning a split. The other six teams in the East were swept by their Western Division opponents. Entering the weekend, the PSAC West looks like a decidedly stronger side of the conference with seven of the nine teams owning winning records and five of the nine owning PSAC records above .500. On the Eastern side, only four teams are above. 500 overall and only two teams, East Stroudsburg and Kutztown, are above .500 in PSAC play.
BEST REBOUNDERS IN THE NATION Much of the success of Slippery Rock over the last six years has come from the rebounding advantage. This year is no different as The Rock leads the nation in rebounding margin at +18.4 and also leads the country in offensive rebounds at an average of 20.3 per game. SRU ranks eighth in country in defensive rebounds with 29.8 per game.
DEFENSE IS THE BEST OFFENSE Along with dominating on the glass, Slippery Rock ranks among the best in the PSAC in field goal percentage defense. The Rock ranks second in the league with opponents shooting 39.1 percent from the field. SRU is 10-0 this year when opponents shoot less than 45 percent from the field.
OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES While the rebounding has been a dominant positive for SRU so far this season, it has often times had to mask poor shooting performances. The Rock ranks 13th in the 18-team PSAC in shooting percentage at 42.8 percent per game. Slippery Rock has shot 34 percent of worse in four of 12 games this year. The 3-point shooting percentage is better than the overall number, as SRU ranks 10th in the PSAC at 34.4 percent from long range. SRU now ranks 14th in the league in free throw shooting percentage at 67.2 percent. Three SRU everyday players are averaging double figure scoring outputs. Kelvin Goodwin leads the way at 12.6 points per game, followed by Antonio Butler at 12.5 and Frank Holloway at 10.7.
SPECIALTY ADVANTAGES Slippery Rock owns an advantage in every “specialty” statistic that shows up in the box score. The Rock have outscored opponents 936-767 in total points, among that is a 345-170 edge in bench points, a 178-132 advantage in points off turnovers, a 233-94 advantage in second chance points and a 127-75 edge in fast break points.
BLOCK PARTY The Rock have three players with at least 10 blocks this season. Erik Raleigh recorded the second highest single-game block total in school history with eight against Millersville and leads the team with 15 blocks. Jamal Gatali has 14 blocks and Cornelius Brown has 10 blocks. A total of nine players have at least one block on the year for SRU.
NO OVERTIME The Rock has not played in an overtime game yet this year. The last overtime game for Slippery Rock was a double overtime loss at Gannon in the PSAC quarterfinals last year.
