Small Group Activity You’ll Need Cross clapper (1 per child)
Say: This game tests to see if you know the difference between selfish love and loving others with pure love. 1. Sit in a circle. 2. Place clappers in the center. 3. Read an item from the Pure Love or Selfish Love list. 4. If it’s pure, kids grab a clapper and shake it.
1. What does pure mean? Clean, with nothing mixed in 2. What kind of love shows we follow Jesus: pure love or selfish love? Pure love 3. What do you think is the difference between pure love and selfish love? Answers will vary. 4. If you only love people who make you happy, what kind of love are you showing? Selfish love 5. To Do Say: I have a bottle of pure water! I think I’ll try a little!

Choose a few review questions. 1. In the Bible story we watched, what did Jesus do each time the devil tempted Him? He said a truth from the Bible and refused to do the sin. 2. In the experiment, the water was disgusting by the end. What do you think that shows us about a heart full of sin? Answers will vary. 3. If you sin, how can you get pure again? Ask God’s forgiveness and help to say, “No!” next time. 4. What are some “ways out” God gives us when we’re tempted? Say Bible verses, ask friends to help, get rid of things that tempt you, pray, leave, etc. 5. When is it hard for you to take God’s way out and say, “No!” to sin? Answers will vary.

1. Drink from the bottle to make 1” of room at the top. Say: Now, imagine this water is someone’s heart. What do you think will happen if they make sinful, wrong choices?

4. Each kid says a sin and drops a tablet in the bottle. Say: Wow. This water is not pure anymore. It’s gross! I can’t make this water pure again. I can’t make my heart pure again, either. We need to ask Jesus to make us pure. 5. Pray together, “Jesus, please forgive us for the sins we’ve done and make our hearts pure.”

Say: Some things are always true because God talks about them in the Bible. When you disobey those truths, it’s always a sin. But some things are between you, your family, and God because they’re not in the Bible. You have to ask God what’s best to keep your heart pure. Let’s play a game to help us figure out the difference!
