‘Hedgehog’ project: On Wednesday, WSCC Bikeability officer, Ana Mankiewicz, visited Year 5 to give a talk about a new project called the ‘Hedgehog Project’ – helping to reduce traffic speed in Chichester to 20 mph. Ana was very impressed with the responses from Year 5 adding that they were a real pleasure to talk to. Rory has given a brief report for the newsletter: “At St Richard’s we will be taking part in a project to reduce speed that will make us a happier and safer community. This project is called the ‘Hedgehog Project’. At school we have been helping out to create some imaginative box hedgehogs. We also had to think up a slogan to go with them. We are doing this to remember our decision to make our roads 20 mph, we made this in 2012.” ‘Change 4 life Club’: As part of our aim to promote a healthier lifestyle in and out of school, Miss Blake and Mrs Wilcock have kindly offered to run a ‘Change4life’ after school club on Tuesdays for Yrs 3/4/5. The multi-sport activities are taken from the Olympic and Paralympic sports and the hope is to give children confidence and skills in sport and to help them to enjoy lifelong participation. Letters will be going home today. Advance notice: one of our parents has offered to run a Volleyball Club after school on Wednesdays. This will start after half term and will be for KS2 children. Letters will follow shortly.
Winter Weather: As the weather has now turned much colder, please ensure your child comes to school with a warm, weatherproof coat. Should we get severe weather this winter, and a decision is made that we need to close the school, a message will be put on the school website and a text sent to parents. Please, therefore, ensure that we have your up-todate mobile telephone number/email address. TESTING ARRANGEMENTS FOR YEAR 2 AND YEAR 6: I am sure you are aware from the media that the Government has introduced new tests for Year 2 and Year 6 this summer. The standards which children are expected to achieve are significantly higher than previously. We will therefore be holding Parents Meetings for parents of children in Year 2 and Year 6. The first meeting, for Year 2 parents, will take place on Thursday, 21st January at 8.55 am. The second meeting, for Year 6 parents, will take place on Wednesday, 3rd February at 6 pm. I would just like to remind parents that holidays taken for Year 2 and Year 6 children in the Summer Term will be unauthorised.
SAINSBURY’S ACTIVE KIDS VOUCHERS: Once again we will be collecting Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers – these vouchers provide additional sports equipment for schools, eg. tennis rackets, tennis balls netballs, footballs, skipping ropes, etc. If you would like to donate your vouchers, a donation box can be found in the school entrance. CLUBS: There are still a few places available in some of our before/after school clubs: Gymnastics – Wednesdays at 8 am – for Yrs 1-4 Multi Sports – Thursdays at 8 am – for KS2 Active Club – Thursdays at 3.15 pm – for Yrs 1 & 2 Application forms are available from the school office or our website.
And finally….. A reminder to all parents that parking in the school car park is not permitted, this includes dropping off/collecting children for before/after school clubs. There is a real safety issue that a child could be run over as cars reverse – especially at this time of year when it is dark in the mornings and evenings. The children’s safety is our main concern, they should always be on the footpaths and not run/play/scoot around the car park. Wishing you a good week,
Mrs Catherine Hunn - Headteacher
