SUBJECT: Mayor Ruge and City Council to formally recognize the top readers of the Buda Public Library’s Summer Reading Club.

1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Each summer, the Buda Public Library conducts a Summer Reading Club. The top readers of this program are to be recognized by the Mayor and City Council. 2. BACKGROUND/HISTORY The Buda Public Library encourages students to keep reading over the summer by providing fun programs and incentive prizes, many provided through the generosity of local businesses. The readers keep track of either the number of books or the number of minutes that they read. Research shows that students who read during school vacations maintain and even improve reading skills while students who do not read lose valuable skills learned the previous year. 3. STAFF’S REVIEW AND ANALYSIS 185 children participated in the library’s Summer Reading Club – Title Log Division and read a total of 20,033 books. Title Log Readers  3rd place – Malachi Richie, 525 books  2nd place – Luke Mosser, 588 books  1st place – Spencer Yang, 700 books

167 children participated in the library’s Summer Reading Club – Time Log Division and read a total of 291,444 minutes Time Log Readers  3rd place – Joshua A. Castillo, 6,500 minutes  2nd place – Gavin Anguiano, 7,144 minutes  1st place – Isabelle Song and Lucas Quieroz, 10,500 minutes each 4. RECOMMENDATION The Buda Public Library presents these children for commendation based on their excellent reading this summer.
