Environmental design & SuDS
resilience,
sustainable
The studios primary focus is on delivering site responsive, adaptive, creative and above all sustainable solutions to a client’s brief and site constraints. We embrace the principal of carbon neutral design from project initiation to landscape maturity. The methodology and approach is site specific, however as a general principle the following will be principle design decisions: Identify and appraise natural, cultural and physical assets and biodiversity value of the site
Our designs aim to reflect the vernacular character of a site and where possible exploit locally sourced materials and construction principles. Minimizing the carbon footprint of construction is a key driver in the design process. During the process discussions with the client encourages the selection of materials with a long lifespan and low carbon footprint. Biodiversity enhancement. The studio recognizes that every site is already a biological asset. We aim to enhance that value through creative and sympathetic design intervention. Working with the site to provide varied and self-sustaining habitats. Working at the site level and on a wider ecosystem basis through green infrastructure principles. Adaptability & Longevity.
Provision for natural drainage and adaptive responsive on-site water retention and ‘hold-back’ provision through SuDS
The value of a landscape matures over time and consequently our design principles acknowledge the necessity for a dynamic approach that evolves as a landscape matures. The precedent for this principle is all around us within the historic landscapes that have evolved and adapted over centuries as taste and requirements have changed.
We minimise cut and fill and where necessary accommodate within the site to reduce spoil movement off-site.
Water management.
Retention and enhancement of viable resources to connect the site to the wider context through green corridors.
Fully appraise existing tree stock, adopting protection using recognised methodology. Accommodate future growth of trees within the project management plan. Utilize soft landscape design to augment social activities to counteract the effects of solar gain encouraging all year round safe use of the site for recreation. Planting schemes with native, wildlife friendly and edible plants. Grey water recycling and reed-beds for foul water treatment. Utilizing soft landscape for passive cooling of the site. Habitat enhancement and creation as an over-riding principal. Liaison with client regarding maintenance to reduce carbon footprint and enhance habitat creation; for example grass mowing regimes.
Site responsive. The site is key, and the process of site assessment and reflection is exhaustive. We take the best ingredients already existing and blend them into the creation mix.

Development pressure and climate fluctuations are dramatically affecting our relationship with water. Increased flood events are having a significant financial, cultural and emotional impact on society today. The studio recognizes and anticipates the role that landscape architects hold in finding solutions to redress the juxtaposition and find equilibrium. Design responses that are based on key sustainable principles can go a long way to ‘designing out’ the risk of environmental impacts. It is our duty of care to the client and the site users to predict and minimize risk through a comprehensive designers risk assessment. This process ensures that the likely impacts of the design both at the point of construction and during the life of the asset are identified and addressed. Sustainable urban design systems are one of a number of ways we can accommodate water within a design environment. They can then augment other aspects of sustainable design including ecological enhancement and heritage appreciation through the naturalizing of water environments. Studio Brochure. Spring 2016

Landscape Architects have a great opportunity to provide play opportunities for people of ALL ages and ALL abilities; it is a rewarding facet of professional work that we at Hadean-Creation are always excited to undertake.
Play for ALL The Studio embraces the concept of informal play provision. As designers we do not solely rely on expensively procured pieces of equipment nor do we misguidedly hope that children will find them exciting to justify the expense. Poorly conceived, ill-sighted and badly maintained play areas are a detriment to social development and often represent a missed opportunity. HadeanCreation has a legacy of providing first class play facilities, blending children’s need for excitement with safety and value for money achieved throughout a lengthy lifespan.
Adaptive land use In a crowded urban environment the space allocated for play provision can often perform other valuable functions, particularly during climatic episodes of disruption. Planning obligations
The Hadean-Creation Studio is experienced in negotiations with statutory bodies to achieve design solutions that effectively blend the requirements of the diverse parties for maximum advantage to all. Play and relaxation go hand in hand and need to co-exist in all our open space designs, for the life of the design. The pressure on land in urban contexts necessitates the sharing of spaces and heightens the necessity for adaptability and flexibility.
The professional design services The Studio can offer residential developers is comprehensive and encompasses preliminary feasibility work along with the site master planning and detail design through to management planning. We are also able to incorporate local planning authority consultation, communication with statutory consultees and community consultations. We are able to work effectively across diverse developmental scales from small developments to large conurbation master planning. With extensive creative experience of working within the spheres of delivering healthy sustainable communities which incorporate community gardening, sustainable drainage methodology and urban fruit tree planting. We integrate soft landscape elements with a material palette that accommodates percolated collection of water and addresses issues of peak flow. We encourage developers to integrate the sites natural assets into the heart of the communities for the benefit of all in the area. Landscape design is an integral factor in creating the community; play and recreation are at the focus of the use of the community. page 38

Hadean Creation core residential design considerations
Creating space for nature Development pressure necessitates a creative solution to the juxtaposition of the community and the natural assets of the site. Developers are now fully aware of the economic value of providing exemplar provision for a sustainable solution to the development aims and objectives.
Value trees We fully comply with the procedures for protecting trees during construction and work with clients to maximise tree retention on a site for added value to both residents and nature.
Management of water We encourage developers to implement designs, which have the added value of well-designed attractive water-bodies. We fully understand the necessity to accommodate the peak flow events and where possible encourage the provision of capacity storage by utilising spaces that multi functional uses, for example utilising play provision spaces for intermittent storage areas. Hadean-Creation
Landscape Architects, Urban Designers & Heritage Consultants. West Yorkshire, UK.
Social considerations Maximise utilisation of public spaces Planning conditions ensure that open space provision is an elemental aspect of residential development however the true value for community open spaces will be enhanced through effective site master planning that provides a well defined green space infrastructure that maximises viability through safe physical connectivity from all areas of the development. We incorporate passive surveillance principles within our designs to ensure our well-defined public open spaces are safe to use and inviting.
Social enhancement leading to health benefits A well-designed landscape environment is able to effectively tackle anti-social behaviour and our studio ethos is to integrate safety into the design process at the feasibility and site analysis stages. Studio Brochure. Spring 2016
